    P.S. Who caught a glimpse of the little monarch caterpillar sleeping in his chrysalis behind my sink? He's supposed to emerge tomorrow or in the next few days!! I've been so excited the past few weeks seeing the process. Oliver has been loving it too. So fun that he decided to park himself right there and let me enjoy the wonder of nature!!

      Also it's awesome that you're incorporating more environmentally friendly methods to house cleaning, such as opting for coconut oil vs mineral oil. Another great thing I'm inspired to try is homemade dish soap! I love your videos and always look forward to them!

      We used to raise monarchs all the time! When you think he is gonna hatch, count for about a week later, until you can see every line of black and orange. They sure do like to make you wait! If you have a camera, you can make a time-lapse video of the chrysalis changing colors! I hope you have fun with your little butterfly!

    Love these kinds of videos Rachel!! And I love those copper canisters, so cute! Just wanted to pass this on because I used to do it until my brain of a husband told me - Since vinegar is an acid and baking soda is a base, they undergo an acid-base reaction. Generally when an acid and a base are mixed together, the result is that the acid and base neutralize each other to form water and a small amount of salt. It's a great drain cleaner though!

    • @racheltalbott
      @racheltalbott  8 лет назад +1

      omg.. so it basically cancels itself out? haha I didn't even know this!!! So stick with one or the other?

    • @ashleyheg7581
      @ashleyheg7581 8 лет назад +1

      I know, I said the same thing! And yeah, one or the other. I will sprinkle baking soda in my sink and scour it with a dishwashing soap, rinse it and then go over it once more with vinegar and water.

    Great video! Just a little information I wanted to share- we see a lot of recipes that mix baking soda and/or soap with vinegar. That mix doesn't really do anything, it makes a non reacting salt(acid+base=salt). It's better to clean with a diluted solution of soap and then spray vinegar on top if streaks are needed to be removed.

    Another tip which is great is for tea/coffee stains on mugs! I hate this and I know a lot of people use bleach but a natural and much better option is to wet the inside of the mug with hot water and then sprinkle in some baking soda, trying as much as possible to get the baking soda on all the stains! But it doesn't matter if you don't get absolutely everywhere. Then leave for a few minutes, and rinse off with warm water and a cloth! It comes off so easily!

    You should try Dr. bronners liquid Castile soap as a dish soap. There are so many uses for it. You can use it on your car, as shampoo, as a facial cleanser, and even on your floor. They have a bunch of different kinds and are plant based. Unfortunately dawn is very toxic but the Castile soap is not. It is affordable too. 😊

    I loved this video, very neat ideas, that even I may try every once in a while. But just a note on coconut oil. It can go rancid after some time and will smell too. Mineral oil is from crude oil, which is also natural, so it's not as bad as you think. It has it's good and bad sides. Also mineral oil may be more water repelling than coconut oil.

    Thanks for sharing Rachel! Gonna try these out for sure. I'm really working on lessening, if not completely x-ing out harsh chemicals in our home. Sadly, the hubs is an AJAX lover. 😖 I'm working on getting that out of our house. Have you done a bathroom cleaning vid? If not, I'd love to see one.
    P.S. Your little buddy is beautiful. I love how they look like Jade with the gold detail. We had one on our fence. We marveled at it while it went through its transformation. As it started to brown towards the end of the cycle, we pinned net over the fence loosely so the butterfly could freely move around. When it hatched we were able to release a beautiful monarch butterfly. The kids got to have it sit on their fingers. It was great!

    If you don't mind me asking, why are baking soda and vinegar both used in a solution? It seems like you would want to use one or the other so that your floor cleaning solution doesn't have a neutral PH. Not criticizing at all, just curious about the chemistry and methods behind choosing the particular ingredients. I'm new to DIY cleaners and I've been doing a bit of experimenting around the home, great video!

    I washed my kitchen floor with the baking soda, dish soap and vinegar and all it did was leave baking soda residue on my floor and didn't clean very well. I had much better luck with my swifter steam mop. also I wipe my fridge down on all the plastic parts inside with vanilla and it really deodorizes. I tried putting baking soda in the fridge but it didn't seem to do much. I didn't bother cleaning my sponges either, I just toss them after a while and start over. and also the best thing I found to clean my sinks was a Mr clean magic eraser :)

      The cutting boards we use in our kitchen are called Boos. I have a link in the description to one, but you can also buy direct from the website. For oils, I have a combination of Doterra and oils from Whole Foods. I collected them and have used them for a variety of needs from cleaning, bath products, natural deodorizer, the list goes on.. I love them!

    Rachel, the vinegar will eventually cause your Quartz to pit/ chip. The best way to clean Quartz/ granite countertops is to mix vodka and water- 3 parts vodka to 1 part water and add in your essential oils. You can also use rubbing alcohol but if you want to truly be green you'd want to use vodka.

    I LOVE these natural tips to clean the house. I am very afraid of cleaning with bleaches and harsh products due to one time I got an intoxication while cleaning :( I want to be able to clean without harming the environment or myself. Thank you!!

    I'm going to get some of those bar cloth things. I've never heard of a double sided mop.
