  • Improve Photoshop rendering speed by turning off OpenCL. It is a one click performance optimization that doubles the speed (ONLY ON SOME COMPUTERS).
See the original video where I compare MacPro and PC workstations:

    Thanks! Very informative video!
Could you do some additional photoshop tests like:
    1. generating 10000x10000px noise and then save it as TIFF with ZIP compression?
    2. panning and drawing on a 10000x10000px file with 50 different adjustment layers?

What Gpu are you using? I'm guessing you're using a Nvidia card? Obviously results will be different compared to ATI cards

This video is now obsolete as Adobe has fixed this bug. The next version of photoshop was not slower with OpenCL ON, but it was not faster either for this benchmark. OpenCL is supposed to accelerate only canvas performance and not effects. I have repeated this later on a system with onboard graphics and the same one with GTX 1080 and there was no difference so I am guessing there would be no difference with AMD card (By the way, last ATI card was 2010, and since then all are AMD branded... and that it also the last time I had an ATI/AMD card so I cannot verify the speed)

They used OpenGL until CS6 (IIRC). They seem to have ripped out OpenGL support and replaced it with OpenCL. My laptop ran Photoshop pretty well until they switched to OpenCL (My Thinkpad's video chips don't have OpenCL drivers written for them). Result? Lower performance and lower quality operations. As a result I am using CaptureOne instead more and more.

I have to correct you as OpenGL and OpenCL are not for the same thing. They still use OpenGL, but it is "Graphic library" so it is used only for display performance as manipulating canvas for example. OpenGL does not have instruction sets to do anything else (I've programmed with it for years). While OpenCL is used for computations, something that CUDA is for nVidia but this one is cross-platform and is not tied to only one manufacurer. The problem is that almost nothing in photoshop can be computed in parallel so it does not benefit much

    Hi,
Why do you think this happens?
    Thanks

OpenCL is GPU acceleration and in this case two CPUs are much more powerful.

NVidia's OpenCL implementation is a bit dodgy. Therefore you sometimes see people having both Nvidia and AMD Graphics in their Workstation... depending on what applications they use.

Nuno Alves If you want to use OpenCL you get an AMD card. If you get a Nvidia card you use CUDA.

Nuno Alves Cause open CL is more geared towards the firepros from amd, where as openGL/cuda thingies are nvidia thingies

and what does the rendering? the north bridge? the south bridge? the ram? oh wait its the GPU.

Why don't you use Camtasia ? :/ filming the screen of your Pc with the camera is so bad :/ please use a screen capture Program like camtasio ! :))

Mehdi El Kamch Any screen recording software takes a lot of resources. Also, I am sure some would say video was speedup/down and results are rigged if you could no see both at the same time

Mehdi El Kamch Any time you screen capture software, system resources are being used, which prevents other programs from using them.

Maybe your GPU does not support it so it just shows default value. Also know that on 2017 version it did not make a difference, so that might have been a bug, but it is worth checking both ways if you can
