The ancient Celts observed a luni-solar calendar, which means that each month was a lunar cycle. The lunar cycle is roughly 29.5 days, which means each month was either 29 or 30 days. 12 cycles is a bit over 354 days, and 13 cycles is a bit under 384 days, which means there was a 13th month in "leap" years, that's how luni-solar calendars work. There is a 19 year cycle in which there are always 12 years of 12 months each, and 7 of 13 months each, because 19 solar cycles (years) is almost exactly equal to 235 lunar cycles (months). (12x12=144, 7x13=91, 144+91=235) The 4 Celtic festivals were celebrated on dates in this luni-solar calendar, which means they were at the same phases of the moon every year, not dates fixed by a solar calendar (like Nov. 1, May 1, etc.). And they lasted for 3 days each, because 3 is the number of complete days within each phase of the moon. Because there are 8 phases of the lunar cycle (1;new/crescent, 2;waxing half, 3;waxing gibbous, 4;full, 5;waning gibbous, 6;waning half, 7;old/de-crescent, 8;dark/invisible) and 29.5 divided by 8 is roughly 3.6. The 1st of these festivals in the year was Imbolc, which was at the time of the new/crescent moon, when the sun was in Aquarius. In other words, it was the first 3 days of the 4th month. The 2nd was Beltane, which was at the full moon with the sun in Taurus, that is, the 12th/13th/14th days of the 7th month. The 3rd was Lunasa, which was also a full moon, with the sun in Leo, that is, 12th/13th/14th of the 10th month. And the last was Samhuinn, which was the dark moon with the sun in Scorpio, that is the last 3 days of the 12th (or 13th in leap years) month. The word Samhuinn means "summer's end", which proves it was the end of the year, not the beginning. So the 4 festivals were observed at 3 phases of the moon; crescent, full, and dark. Which correspond to the 3 aspects of the Goddess Ceridwen; maiden, mother, crone. If modern Druids wish to be connected to the Celtic ancestors and tradition, then they should observe these festivals at the times the ancients did. To observe them on dates fixed in a solar calendar, disconnects from tradition, from the ancestors, and from the meanings and purposes of the festivals. For example, Lunasa was at a full moon, because it was a cereal harvest festival. And for as long as farming has existed, farmers have always sowed seeds at new moons, and harvested crops at full moons. And Samhuinn was at a dark (invisible) moon, because it was all about connecting to the unseen world, the "otherworld" of Celtic mythology, to the ancestors, and to the gods, and the "faerie folk". And by the way, the true time of Samhuinn, that is, when the sun and moon are both in Scorpio, is exactly the same time as the Hindu festival of Diwali. And Julius Caesar stated that the Druids shaved the front or top halves of their heads "from ear to ear, forward to the hairline", which is exactly how the Brahmins of Sri Lanka and the far south of India shave their heads. And there is a Welsh oral tradition which states that the Britons came originally from the Isle of Taprobane, which is what the ancient Greeks called Sri Lanka. As Lewis Spence wrote in his book The History and Origins of Druidism; "That the Druids were Brahmins, there can be no doubt". (edit:) And for the ancient Celts, the days began at sunset, because the new moons are only visible for a short time after sunset (in the western sky). The days began at sunset because the months began from the sighting of the new crescent moons. Therefore, the CORRECT times for the next few festivals will be as follows; Lughnassadh: sunset Aug.2-sunset Aug.5, 2020. Samhuinn: sunset Nov.15-sunset Nov.18 (which will be the last 3 days of the 13th month, making this year a "leap"). Imbolc: sunset Feb.13-sunset Feb.16, 2021. And Beltane: sunset Apr.25-sunset Apr.28.
