How did you know I was a rocker?! Who wanted to learn the language of Jazz? Who only knew three jazz chords but not why they were jazzy?! Get out of my mind! No actually stay there it's perfect...! Thank you!
My thoughts exactly xD
Ricks gentle on my mind but tuff on me tendons!! Its illegal to play jazz on a Dano and not a dino L 5! Lets go downtown for bookiing Mr Beato. walk this way......
Holy s**t rick every time I watch one of your videos it adds another 6 months to the list of stuff I need to learn and then you make another one... Nicely done keep em coming your killing me but thank you.

I can see why this dude has over 2 million subscribers, i came here from two of his Wes Montgomery vids and I’m just blown away by this dude whom I now refer to as, “Sensei Beato”... Thank you for this, I’m grateful and inspired🙏🏼
This is masterful lesson by someone who really knows his stuff when it comes to jazz guitar or guitar in general. As a "rocker" trying to break into the world of jazz I see what you do and I understand it completely by ear but getting my fingers to cooperate is the tricky thing. I've listened to "straight" jazz for years and I understand the basic chord structure but have always found the idea of soloing over the changes to be a steep challenge. It sounds to me like you've spent a lifetime working on those riffs and I envy your chops. As all the greats do you make it look easy.
Keep working on those arpeggios. It becomes muscle memory before you know it. Just keep going until that happens. I concentrated on just getting the Maj7, 7 and min7 down first, and only moved on to the others afterwards.
Im a bass player and I find this very informative. Ive been exploring the possibilties of playing jazz chords on 4 string fretless bass. Though the chord shapes on bass are diffrent and we dont have as many voicings at our disposal, I find it good to get information from pianist and guitarist as well as other instrumentalist. The bottom line is that music is relative regardless what instrument you play.
Concentrate on the important notes within the chords. Root 3 and 7 !
I don't know why it took me so long to find Rick, but man, am I ever glad that I did! This cat is a serious musician and musicologist. Just this one video is a masterclass! I've spent YEARS figuring out most of this stuff on my own, but he is bringing all that (and more) together in 49 minutes!
Rick, you are my new hero!
Thanks so much, Rick. This was an excellent explanation of the most important jazz chords and arpeggios. Aimed exactly at someone like me.......an old rocker who has loved jazz his entire life, but never played in a jazz group. Now, all my playing is for my own enjoyment at home and your lesson will help immensely.
I love how great that Danelectro sounds for jazz!
Ditto.
Just saw this today. Amazingly comprehensive and clearly explained lesson. Probably the best I’ve ever seen!!! You are that rare combination Rick. Astonishingly great player and teacher. Thank you
Thank you for what you do!! It's really good stuff. I've very recently gained the desire to jazz up my playing and then bam you showed up in my recommendations. And it couldn't of been a better teacher to intro me into jazz. VERY NICE!!
Thanks, Rick, for this entry-level instruction. Many of your video lessons go so far over my head that I don't really know how to practically apply the principles (yet). It's great to find a video that is so useful to those of us struggling at the lower rungs of the ladder leading out of pentatonic territory. This is a wealth of information for anyone who wants to familiarize themselves with the language of jazz. I think it will really help to develop my ear as well. Much appreciated!
There is something so beautiful about "jazz" chords. In effect there is not really a jazz chord, but there are chords that lend themselves nicely to jazz, and they are distinctive and beautiful sounding.
You should make a series of videos on Jazz appreciation or something and to take people who aren't familiar with jazz though it so that more young people are into it. Some lessons on how to get into jazz also. If you've been playing guitar for a week you can play along with some AC DC songs but unless you play for years you can't really play a jazz standard authentically. But you can still appreciate it right? So like maybe you should compile all the things you have on jazz appreciation into a playlist or something. Ideally I think that you should make some videos on jazz appreciation. How to take people who aren't familiar with jazz at all through jazz.
Your videos are so helpful to me and my playing! I was in a spot where my playing was stagnant but you are helping me explore new avenues in music so thanks and keep up the awesome videos!
I paid bunch of money for teachers who never explained it like I ever understood but you explained all important and useful things in one hour I needed. Thanks Rick.. Great Great Great. Great lesson
Wow this is incredibly enlightening and straight to the point. I'm gonna be rewatching this for weeks probably.
Best lessons on tube.
So much to learn... so little time
I've been wanting to learn this for years! I know I'm like 3 years late to the party on this one but you've just created a lifelong fan. Thank you so much for sharing this knowledge 🙏
More clear and concise and incredibly helpful than any video I've watched. Really appreciate it, can't wait to join the. Lib and buy the book. Surgery Monday, then I will get with it . Thanks for incredible teaching here.
Thank you Rick! You are an amazing Teacher and human being. So glad I stumbled upon your channel. Peace to you and your beautiful family!
Thanks Rick ! I have learned to play rock by ear and have had no formal training . This has helped me look at Jazz from a new prospective . Great video .
I just love this! A new way of learning. A way that gives us the framework that allows us to expand. Why has no one taught like this before?
Great cadence to your teaching style. I’ve been looking for a channel like this for quite some time. Amazing level of knowledge... big fan.
Great video Rick. Ties a lot of things together and a great place to start when looking into expanding vocabulary to include jazz styles. Cheers👍
Rick, I'm really happy that this video popped up on my up next.list. Over the last few months, I've been finding myself noodling (as ya do) and visiting ♯9 , ♭9 into a Maj7. It's been leaving me excited to expand my vocabulary. Also, moving away from those pesky barre chords might get rid of the numbness in my fretting index finger. Different chord shapes appear to be vital to keeping me playing guitar. With the Beato Book, the ear training and some patience, I think even this 58 year old can become a much more fluent guitarist than just regurgitating the same blues licks over and over.
Thank you Rick, I am a rocker about ready to take the plunge...you are a great player, and break it down in a way I think I can get.
Hi Rick. Greetings to you from Ireland. As usual, a very cool and insightful lesson. It's always a pleasure to watch and listen to all the invaluable information you share.
The first Rick Beato lesson I actually understand! 😂. Great video Rick, thanks for sharing you knowledge to the world.
I've been playing guitar and upright bass for 10 years, and about 3 years I jumped into to jazz. I didn't have much guidance that i could understand, and i have been faking it UNTIL NOW. Thank you Rick.
Thanks Rick. That bass line comping sounded great BTW. It made go back and listen to Jim Hall on the Undercurrent record with Bill Evans. His comping on My Funny Valentine is just amazing. Such a great record, top 10 for me for jazz.
How did you know this is was precisely what I needed??
THANK YOU RICK!
I'm fairly new to guitar, and this is really helping expand my comfort level with the fretboard
this is what we all been waiting for dawg!
Hi Rick, I'd Just like to say thanks, thank you for putting so much time & energy into sharing your hard earned knowledge with all of us interested crazy musicians. It seems to me like you love doing it for us. Your helping me in many ways, Like the andy wallace vid & ear training, etc... thank god for generous people like yourself & the mediums like youtube, to share the wealth. God bless you brother. I hope to hear your next #1 hit record soon.
That's great man. Thanks for sharing, love the way you explain things.
Rick I love this video being a rock player I appreciated every second of this video I hope you have more installments for rockers man
this is cool and mostly very clear.. I would mention when you are doing the arpeggios are called off by finger rather than scale number which took me a minute to realize. I am grateful you have shared this.
“It’s a half step above the thing.”
Now you’re speaking my language! 😆👍🏼
This is by far the best tutorial I have found for jazz chording .Thank you ,Thank you, .....
Thank you Rick! Awesome information for us rockers who want to expand or vocabulary, but find it hard to "decode the mysteries of jazz"!
Thanks Rick. Lovely voicings and jazz chord shapes give us a break from barre chords - especially as I play more acoustic guitar these days.
m7b5 always reminds me of Gary Moore - Parisienne Walkways, Still Got The Blues.
What a find! This channel is a gem! Thanks for the lesson Rick!
Rick, this is the most useful video lesson on RUclips. Thank-you very much!
Wonderful and so informative, on point and distilled into useable knowledge, Thanks again Rick.
Thank you Rick. Just what I was looking for. It helps me make sense of my book "Mel Bay's Deluxe Encyclopedia of Guitar Chords".
This is the best lesson on jazz chords i've seen... big thanks.
you're so genuine. Thanks for the lesson
Clear and systematic as ever. Thanks Rick.
Great lesson, and I'm always blown away by how cool that DanElectro sounds!
All rockers secretly want to be jazz guys. I was trying to look up how to make sesame chicken and ended up here somehow. Best guitar channel period
Great lesson. I'm learning all those chords in Drop 2 voicings now, which is something I wish I knew about a lot sooner.
Thanks so much for this Rick. Good revision for me and well explained as usual:)
Very helpful man!! Thank you so much, keep up the good work.
Excellent excellent video just what a beginner like me was searching for in jazz thank you .
man back in the day i remember to spend a whole day just to get used to the D7#9 in a way that the chord flows along the others hahaha it was cool to be the only amoung my friends to know a "different" chord and then we started to look at songs with weirdo chords and was fun, very rewarding for all of us in a sense of playing and finding new stuff
I really liked this one Rick was helpful filling in some holes in the practice room.. Keep it up i love it.
Thank You, I'm learning so much from this 40something minutes, I'm happy to be able to follow.
Excellent lesson Rick! I will be getting your book asap. Peace!
After 3 weeks of hard graft, watching this fantastic video over and over, I finally have the chords and arpeggios down. Can anyone recommend a good follow-on video to this?
Loved every single bit of the lesson
This was so helpful. Thank you so much Rick!
I so admire you I watch your Chanel all the time. This lesson is great I am trying to teach myself with a acoustic guitar.
Thank you God Bless
Thanks so much for all this great information - wow, what an intro to jazz. I now need a lie down with a cold towel across my furrowed and lined brow.
Wow, what a great lesson. I must admit that my old ears have a better time picking this up than my eyes do. I like lessons that force you to stop, go back (as many times as needed) and repeat. You call this easy???
It is a lot of fun though. Thank you for posting this video.
"The next one we are going to do is when you have the 2 chord in one measure, the 5 chord in another measure and the 1 chord in one measure or two measures. Ok, so that's the what i call the ahhh... 4 bar 251 or the where or the two chord in one bar, 5 chord in one bar , the 1 chord in one bar but... .. .. we're not gonna get to fancy !" 🤞🤞
Much love Rick.. actually teaching me jazz.... glad I can pause this though. lol and come back a dozen times.
This was awesome! Thank you so much for the lesson.
Awesome! (walking bass + chords)! Beautiful work!!!
Man I love m9 chords.. They sound very Pink Floydish to me! :) This seems like great stuff to help one get into playing Steely Dan stuff too! Man I'd love to see a Steely Dan vid from you Rick!
Agreed. I love the sound of a maj9 moving to a min9 (say an Emaj9 to Emin9) - Led Zep Rain Song all day long.
Pink Floyd does use a Dm9 in the song 'Dogs', one of their best works.
Thanks, very helpful for me to spice a little my playing !!!
Beautiful! And what a fantastic lesson!
This is the gateway drug to jazz ! Thanks Rick.
Going through some of your older vids...i realized what a WEALTH of useful and amazing knowledge you are...again thanks man for all u do! Im just curious...is there anything you can't do? ...lol be well Rick!
I wanna learn this so badly! I've been playing acoustic covering everybody else's music for 50 years (not that there's anything wrong with that), but I'm just sooooo in love with jazz these days and I WANT IT, DAMN IT! LOL I"m in the market for a passable semi hollow and then it's on! In the meantime, I'm schlepping my way through on my dreadnought.
An epiphone dot studio would be my recommendation. Super affordable and great tone. Perfect for jazz.
I'm in the same boat as you, I have just bought a Gretch 5422GT semi hollow body, after playing an acoustic for close to thirty years. It's so beautiful, it's like looking at a 57 Chevy.
Excellent Rick, keep up the good work.
those are the 7 that you need to know.....what ever it will take me a month to learn the first one. GEEZ Rick
Just discovered ur videos. All thus far have been amazing. subscribed!
Learning to play like Skunk / Denny Dias has been a life long goal and 2023 is the year for it to happen. I play Adim 5645xx or 5x454xx. You just taught me the Am7b5 as 5x554x. Thx.
Thank you once again Rick!
Such a great foundation right there .... thank you so very much :)
Great video(s)! this is really cool for me as stated elsewhere here. I'm a metal player, predominantly doing two things... playing with semi tones or motifs while suggesting chord changes underneath, or using pedal tones against arpeggios.
I'm starting to see similarities between the baselines in some jazz tunes and what I do in metal and am infatuated with the sound of resolutions... particularly 4ths. for someone that don't play jazz (but would love to) this Is very cool. I would love to be able to add some different flavors to the standard stuff I play and further accentuate those resolutions from time to time. I'm even liking the idea of jazz shell voicings for certain distorted material maybe aka Panama type thing with arpeggiated extended chords and pedals. ...If that makes any sense.
long story short; these videos are killers!!! ty!!!
Thank you, very helpful information.
good on you Rick, we needed this haha
Having the chord shapes displayed while naming them would be a great asset in a beginner video. Same goes for the arpeggios. Was a little hard to see some of the changes.
Bookmarked for later obsessive practice/retrieval. I knew some of these but probably not some others.
Beato Book! Has them all.
34:00 - where most Johnny Mathis tunes live. This is one great video lesson. Everywhere rock music lives completely destroys one ability to transfer to Jazz without great difficulty.
Love this lesson, great job
Great job as usual Mister Beato !
Best jazz guitar lesson online imo.
Wish I could thumbs up 1000x! was so fun to play along! So inspiring!!!
THANK YOU!!! This is gold!
Great video, you truly are a gift to RUclips.
I like listening to jazz and fusion, appreciate the lessons and the the theory. Wish I could hear myself playing jazz, but I haven't quite been able to make the leap.
[Edit] I think I figured it out: I'm an adrenaline junkie :D Thanks just the same, Rick. I will keep watching listening, and hopefully learning stuff :)
What a gem this video is!
Even nice to see for drummers..:) Great job man!!
This is an amazing video. For some reason, this clicked in for me where other videos haven't. Thank you.
Thanks Rick this is brilliant info.
You are amazing! Well done!
great video thanks Rick.
