This is masterful lesson by someone who really knows his stuff when it comes to jazz guitar or guitar in general. As a "rocker" trying to break into the world of jazz I see what you do and I understand it completely by ear but getting my fingers to cooperate is the tricky thing. I've listened to "straight" jazz for years and I understand the basic chord structure but have always found the idea of soloing over the changes to be a steep challenge. It sounds to me like you've spent a lifetime working on those riffs and I envy your chops. As all the greats do you make it look easy.
Keep working on those arpeggios. It becomes muscle memory before you know it. Just keep going until that happens. I concentrated on just getting the Maj7, 7 and min7 down first, and only moved on to the others afterwards.
Im a bass player and I find this very informative. Ive been exploring the possibilties of playing jazz chords on 4 string fretless bass. Though the chord shapes on bass are diffrent and we dont have as many voicings at our disposal, I find it good to get information from pianist and guitarist as well as other instrumentalist. The bottom line is that music is relative regardless what instrument you play.
Concentrate on the important notes within the chords. Root 3 and 7 !
I don't know why it took me so long to find Rick, but man, am I ever glad that I did! This cat is a serious musician and musicologist. Just this one video is a masterclass! I've spent YEARS figuring out most of this stuff on my own, but he is bringing all that (and more) together in 49 minutes!

Aimed exactly at someone like me.......an old rocker who has loved jazz his entire life, but never played in a jazz group. Now, all my playing is for my own enjoyment at home and your lesson will help immensely.

Thanks, Rick, for this entry-level instruction. Many of your video lessons go so far over my head that I don't really know how to practically apply the principles (yet). It's great to find a video that is so useful to those of us struggling at the lower rungs of the ladder leading out of pentatonic territory. This is a wealth of information for anyone who wants to familiarize themselves with the language of jazz. I think it will really help to develop my ear as well. Much appreciated!
There is something so beautiful about "jazz" chords. In effect there is not really a jazz chord, but there are chords that lend themselves nicely to jazz, and they are distinctive and beautiful sounding.
You should make a series of videos on Jazz appreciation or something and to take people who aren't familiar with jazz though it so that more young people are into it. Some lessons on how to get into jazz also. If you've been playing guitar for a week you can play along with some AC DC songs but unless you play for years you can't really play a jazz standard authentically. But you can still appreciate it right? So like maybe you should compile all the things you have on jazz appreciation into a playlist or something. Ideally I think that you should make some videos on jazz appreciation. How to take people who aren't familiar with jazz at all through jazz.

Rick, I'm really happy that this video popped up on my up next.list. Over the last few months, I've been finding myself noodling (as ya do) and visiting ♯9 , ♭9 into a Maj7. It's been leaving me excited to expand my vocabulary. Also, moving away from those pesky barre chords might get rid of the numbness in my fretting index finger. Different chord shapes appear to be vital to keeping me playing guitar. With the Beato Book, the ear training and some patience, I think even this 58 year old can become a much more fluent guitarist than just regurgitating the same blues licks over and over.

man back in the day i remember to spend a whole day just to get used to the D7#9 in a way that the chord flows along the others hahaha it was cool to be the only amoung my friends to know a "different" chord and then we started to look at songs with weirdo chords and was fun, very rewarding for all of us in a sense of playing and finding new stuff

Agreed. I love the sound of a maj9 moving to a min9 (say an Emaj9 to Emin9) - Led Zep Rain Song all day long.
Pink Floyd does use a Dm9 in the song 'Dogs', one of their best works.

I wanna learn this so badly! I've been playing acoustic covering everybody else's music for 50 years (not that there's anything wrong with that), but I'm just sooooo in love with jazz these days and I WANT IT, DAMN IT! LOL I"m in the market for a passable semi hollow and then it's on! In the meantime, I'm schlepping my way through on my dreadnought.
An epiphone dot studio would be my recommendation. Super affordable and great tone. Perfect for jazz.
I'm in the same boat as you, I have just bought a Gretch 5422GT semi hollow body, after playing an acoustic for close to thirty years. It's so beautiful, it's like looking at a 57 Chevy.

Great video(s)! this is really cool for me as stated elsewhere here. I'm a metal player, predominantly doing two things... playing with semi tones or motifs while suggesting chord changes underneath, or using pedal tones against arpeggios.
I'm starting to see similarities between the baselines in some jazz tunes and what I do in metal and am infatuated with the sound of resolutions... particularly 4ths. for someone that don't play jazz (but would love to) this Is very cool. I would love to be able to add some different flavors to the standard stuff I play and further accentuate those resolutions from time to time. I'm even liking the idea of jazz shell voicings for certain distorted material maybe aka Panama type thing with arpeggiated extended chords and pedals. ...If that makes any sense.

Having the chord shapes displayed while naming them would be a great asset in a beginner video. Same goes for the arpeggios. Was a little hard to see some of the changes.
Bookmarked for later obsessive practice/retrieval. I knew some of these but probably not some others.
