Wholeheartedly agree. All my bikes are singles and I’m glad they are, but they’re dual sport/sorta mini-ADV types that are almost exclusively ridden on backroads and trails. If I were going to do a bunch of street and highway riding, I’d go V-twin or 270 parallel without question.
Agreed. Nice and narrow but smoother than the same size single. I do not like the wide knee position of inline 4s. So unnecessary

Yamahas CP2 in XSR700/MT07/Tenere700 is best all around motor imo. Tons of power for being fast in city and not kill yourself fast and still does good on highway. Extremely low maintenance costs as well and reliability is proven.

If you're in heavy traffic in the city commute maybe, ... but anywhere out of town other than on trails a 3 or 4 cylinder is the way to go. My bike's 33 years old, and high mileage, a inline 4 cylinder 1100 and although there's a very very slight vibration at lower speeds, once it hits 125 kilometers per hour (Canada) there isn't the slightest vibration in the bars, pegs, or anywhere else. I've ridden many thumpers and twins in my many years, and I may again some day just for the simplicity, but out on the open road not many people will love the vibration a thumper brings with it.
He did say "street". I don't think town roads count as streets.
Try that bike in Europe rush cities rush hour to get to work and see how it goes

I spend enough time in the Philippines to know that once I get back over I'll probably buy a small single cylinder, .... but in North America where most people buy a bike for pleasure the majority of us get out of the city and traffic as quick as possible. In British Columbia where I live a single cylinder with all that vibration might be alright for some, ... but not for most.

Nope pretty sure it’s around 20k miles. The one that requires valves checked all the time is the 450 SMCR
Earlier this year I brought my Rebel 500 for its first inspection and got a Vitpilen 701 for the day (at that point I had only driven the Duke 125, the Rebel 500 and the MT-07 - I'm a new biker mind you).
Man what a shock! I always liked how the Vitpilen looked, but never had any intention of driving it tbh. It gets some minutes of riding to get used to its jerky way in low speeds, but man is it fun to just open the throttle and see how quick it goes. Sadly I'm a shorty and the seat height is just too high for me to feel completely safe on it.
If you feel comfortable on one, just get it!

Great video! Not knocking your bike; I love a nice thumper, but I’ve got to bring up the fact that all the things you love about that bike are the same reasons I love the NC750X DCT. However, the NC gets better gas mileage, even easier maintenance, smoother engine, built in storage, and a transmission that makes heavy traffic quite bearable, oh, and almost half the price.
Singles are an experience. I have owned an old british matchless 500 and a DR 650 suzuki along with old 2 stroke Bultacos! Gotta love them!
My first bike is a 2020 Mt-07, and I LOVE IT. A bunch of down low power, and very comfortable

It's all about your preference. I've owned almost every type of bike. Single, P twin, V twin, V4, and still my favorite is the in line 4. In April last year I grabbed 2020 ZX6R. For me it's perfect. Also it does just fine on the low end with the new setup, but will still scream on the high end like a banshee.

The title should be "best motorcycle engines for daily riding in the city". If you live somewhere with fast, flowing roads and no traffic lights, a thumper is the wrong choice for daily riding
Agreed, I sit more at the twins, particularly the 1290 Vtwin. An AMAZING engine.

@Lassi Kinnunen 81 There is nothing problematic about a single cylinder. It just isn't as enjoyable. A modern 4 cylinder goes 30,000 miles with no maintenance other than oil changes. For most poseurs that will be a trip to the mechanic for spark plugs and a valve adjustment every 10 years

KTM/Husky big thumper bros. stand up!!! I'm only 2 weeks in with my Husky 701 so far. Here's my thoughts on some things mentioned in this video in no particular order.
Yes it's fast and very torquey. It's a blast!
Sound? Meh, don't care.
Looks? Yeah even my 500R was waaaay sexier, but eh I still like how my Husky looks.
Yes it's fuel efficient and I am a fuel efficiency bean counter. I love that I can get 250+ km on a single tiny 13L tank, even if it is premium fuel.
Vibrations, have to say I disagree, at least on the 690/701. I find my Husky is actually super smooth and no more vibrational than my CBR500R parallel twin was. Either I'm just more tolerant of vibrations or I don't know. I find my hands never tingle on my 701, at least no more than what my 500R already did. I was genuinely shocked how butter smooth it was to the point that it honestly feels no worse than a twin to me.
Finally, THANK YOU Spite for that phone mount location idea. I was messing with my new quad lock mounting position last night, but could not find a satisfactory location on my handle bar for it. I like how you have it mounted, it's perfect. I'll be copying the layout, thanks. 🙂

my current ninja 650, on the highway doing around 75~80mph, is way more economical than my previous 250cc dualsport

Spite forgot, that VFR doesn't generally need its valves checked, mine has around 60kkm (rougly 40k miles), never done valves, I know people, who have over 100kkm on them with one check, not adjustment
Some say if it starts quick, the valve adjustment is likely good. If it starts slow even with a new battery, probably best to get new spark plugs and check the valve adjustment. If you do a lot of track days, valve checks become more important for not losing a valve, holing a piston or throwing a connecting rod.

It's the most divisive motorcycle ever look wise some people love it and some can't stand the looks of it. It's a fun bike to ride but man I think it's ugly AF.
The Svartpilen and Vitpilen look better than a lot of other hikes.
I just started riding 3 months ago, got an 03 Suzuki Savage 650 single for $1000, love it and I'll probably always keep it!

I traded it and $1000 for an 08 Suzuki VStrom 650 a year ago. Then just traded that for a 2023 Grom with 152 miles on it.

I agree with you, my first street legal bike was a Suzuki Savage s40 boulevard, that single big jug bike was easy to throw around and could squeeze through any traffic jam.

Been riding a BMW F800R for a year, it's perfect for commuting and having a blast every weekend or so. Can't get any more premium than that electronic and comfort wise in this range of price.

Parallel twin is the best compromise
After 31 years of riding and having had, well, everything, the best engine comes down to a 90 degree Twin. Might be parallel with 270 degree crank, or something with 2 cilinders at 90 degrees like a Guzzi. Or like the new pan america, 60 degrees between cilinders combined with 30 degrees at the crank. As long as the effective distance is 90 degrees.

My friend owns spartpilen 701 and it's a very fun bike to ride smooth and torquey.
First bike was a single, great way to learn. Current bike is a big-ish displacement V-Twin. I prefer the big twin for commuting personally, but thumpers have their (wonderful) place.
I'm sure it's fun, but I'll stick with Yamaha triple for now.

I’ve had dozens of motorcycles over the years. I’ve never had so much fun as I do now on my Honda ATV 150! It’s light it’s extremely nimble!. I can squeeze in anywhere, i park by the front door at the grocery store, nobody cares cause it’s not a full on motorcycle 🏍 it’s perfect!!
City riding/ commute I recommend a scooter. Just the right engine size for city riding. Although i do like the Parallel twins of Triumph too

I ride a ktm 690 Enduro, traffic and red lights are no problem it's not air cooled and just means more wheelies. 50 mpg and they are a blast in the turns even with the 21in front tire.
The vibration and sound of a thumper ruin the experience for me. I prefer a V4, even for daily riding, despite the fact that they are more tricky to work on, the ride quality makes up for that.
I4s are similar. Smoothness is very underrated until you have to drive for some distance.

Perfect balance of everything, and the valve maintenance is "recommended ".
As someone who's owned multiple bikes, I like thumpers. They're narrower and lighter, so the bike is more flickable. They have power down low where you need it. They're economical; even if a multiple cylinder bike has the same displacement, it'll use more fuel due to increased friction and rotational inertia. They're easy to work on for sure! And even the vibes can be largely tamed with a good counter balancer. Compare an old thumper vs. a new one with a counter balancer, and you'll see what I mean.
Secondly, if you want good looking thumpers, Royal Enfield makes a few; in fact, they're known for thumpers. Their new Meteor 350 has a good counter balancer, and I can't really feel the vibes. It looks good too. The same applies to their new Classic 350; it's a great looking bike with that post war aesthetic, while using the same J series engine from the Meteor. OTOH, on my old 1982 Honda FT500 Ascot, I was DONE after an hour or so; the vibes were that bad!

I like the looks of older bikes. The DRZ with some D606s has that mad max / army dirt bike look we all had action figures for. I got rid of that rear fender though.
One bangers are only good for off-road, they torture your body riding on the tarmac.

Decked out FZ-09 is a fantastic day to day ride. All the right junk in all the right places. Also, maintenance is easy and cheap! Coors works fine for oil, and insulin mixed with bourbon keeps the injectors nice and clean. 👍🥃
Spent almost 10 years with a Dr 650 and I had a great fun. Still looking for next level singles honestly. I'm digging the Svart 701 but also learned to love twins so not sure the 690 would do. Great fun though, keep it up Spike!
Rokform killed my phone's camera. Like the mount, just wish they made a vibration dampener like Quad Lock. Had to spend more money to replace....

Have 4 bikes: ‘13 Super Tenere, ‘93 Guzzi 1000 S, ‘20 Svartpilen 401 and ‘21 Honda CRF300L Rally. Until I bought my 2 small singles, I’d run around everywhere on my Tenere mostly. However, I now only use the big twin for two-up and long distance riding, as the singles are so easy and fun to buzz on, I don’t even contemplate riding the big Yamaha. My 1000 S is a hoot, but it’s built for smooth, mountain roads (Italian bikes like twisties) due to an antiquated suspension, rendering it cumbersome due to our deteriorating infrastructure (potholes, gravel, etc).
The Svartpilen 401 is by far the most fun I’ve had in 30+ years of riding street and owning dozens of bikes. The new CRF300L Rally is a great bike for going just about anywhere, so long as you’re not trying to break any land speed records. It’s a great all around bike, too. So, if I had to choose an engine configuration for daily use, I’d also side with my singles, but, more than anything, a lighter more nimble bike, will almost always be the bike you’ll roll out to run errands, commute or do a buzz around on if time is short.
Soooo, RE is one of the best Daily Riders?

My 2021 DR650 will do 90 loaded with panniers and gear at about 200 pounds (me and all gear) in Phoenix and out in the desert. I'm sure I'll grenade it at some point.

i own a bandit 1250 (inline 4) a DRZ400 (single), VTR 250 (vtwin) and a 1975 cb500t (parallel twin) and they all have their own characteristics, but few things in this world sound as satisfying as labouring a single cylinder up a hill, thumping all the way, off course all opinions about motorcycle sound stop at the cbx1000 but singles do warrant some merit
As much as I loved my single CBR250R, which is still a brilliant commuter bike, the big triple on my Triumph 955 makes a super compelling argument with the extra torque, power, and factory built luggage options. I’ll take the 955 triple every day of the week as its turbine smooth and comfortably beats anything that’s not a Tesla in ludicrous mode away from the lights.

I have a VFR800 like he had. Thing is, you don't need to do anything on this engine except change the oil. It just works. It's a perfect embodiment of Honda's reliable reputation. Even doing the valves at all is a bit controversial, most people get by perfectly fine without doing it. I just racked up 14 thousand miles in two (canadian) years of daily commute and I only changed the air filter, brake pads, and the coolant just for good measure. Oh, and I dropped it a couple of times.. so I swapped a fairing, sidebag and a mirror, all found easily on local classified ads :)

just looking at torque, after riding the Super Duke. how does compare? Mine is a torque monster. My first dirt bike was a yz465h. loved the lightness and it was indestructible. Nothing has thrilled me more than the yz, until the duke. I know more money more cylinders more everything. Not a fair comparison. But a very easy daily rider.
My favorite is still the triple.

I prefer twins for street. A properly designed v-twin has vibes down low, and a section of rpm that are smooth and perfect for the highway. Can be lightweight if you get a performance v-twin, or low to the ground like cruisers are, so they feel lighter.
Each engine has it's place. I am happy we have more singles, triples, and v-4's than a decade or two ago where it was all i-4, vtwins, or ... that's it.
If I have to do my own maintenance, I'd prefer a thumper. Otherwise, I'd take a twin or triple.
if you like big singles check out the old 2006-2011 MT-03's i have one and theyre amazing! way better than the new ones

Hah! I love my Duke 690. It's in the shop (shocker) so I picked up an old Katana 750 and the top end is fun, but it's not nearly as fast off the line.

The Vespa 300HPE is my personal favorite for urban commuting.
Love my WR. As a beginner dual-sport rider, there are not many better bikes that you can ride to the trails, on the trails, and then home on, covered in sweaty mud and a grinning rider.
