I love my Catamount 2s. I had 3 pairs of the first version in which I’ve put over 1200 miles total. The new one feels less stiff and more nimble on off camber terrain instead of feeling like a teeter totter when on top of rocks. Still just as protective, but closer to the feel of the Hyperion Tempo, with a better outsole design. Good update and more accessible to more people in terms of design. Kofuzi also mentioned that the shoes feel like they’d be best for the more runnable terrain with not too much vert gain. I beg to differ. This shoe feels extremely confident and grippy in sketchy trails, comparable to a peregrine in terms of nimbleness, IMO.
The rubber is really good but the outsole is definitely limited due to the lug depth. That doesn't have to be bad. I also liked running in the Zinal and now in the Catamount 2 (currently my favorite shoe). But compared to 5mm or even deeper lugs (e.g. Merrell Long Sky 2) you are limited here. In really deep mud (I mean the deep where you can't see the midsole anymore) only extreme profile helps. On the other hand, 5mm lugs don't run so well on streets, hard rock or in parks. The profile of the Catamount is definitely sufficient for most runners and most situations. And in my opinion this is the first rubber that comes close to vibram.
Eh. Not everyone is into fancy new tech and marshmallow super stacks despite what you might see in the echo chamber of the running shoe world. I’d venture to guess most of us are out here looking for a consistent shoe that we can trust and for many that is Brooks. Is what it is.
Hard to find many reviews of this shoe , thanks for the info ! Also not a bad looking shoe. Brooks has a few good models , I think this one sounds like one of them . Tecton x on sale is a great tip!
Thanks for your honest and transparent reviews. Even when I am not in the market for any shoes, I watch every video here, I enjoy your reviews. However, I have noticed that you no longer review any Nike shoes lately. I'm be keen to hear your opinion on the latest alphafly, vapourfly and zoom Tempo. Shout out to you from South Africa.
I haven't watched for 6 months, runners knee. My first run was yesterday. I spent months at the Ortho, about 6 weeks ago I decided to work the knee despite the pain. I did 60 squats a day 30 at a time no weight, and kept adding reps. The knee just healed it's amazing. Squats did it for sure, I tried everything else you could imagine. After the first day I had a positive reaction, I'm happy to be back.
They didn’t add any stack height. But they made the midsole less stiff by removing the rock plate, so it feels softer underfoot. The lugs are also the same depth on paper but a different and better pattern
as I was editing the video, it occurred to me that my feeling that the lug depth and height are different could really just be the result of changing the plate (sky vault) position higher or closer to the foot. the ballistic shield thing in the first catamount was directly adjacent to the outsole, which I would anticipate would make the entire shoe feel shorter and a bit more firm
When you ran through that puddle at 0:30, was the protection you talk about enough? Typically I tend to avoid those sorta of puddles, had too many bad exerpiences with water in those situations that made the rest of the run very uncomfortable.
the bigger puddles were actually fine, as I was moving a bit quicker. the water protection was enough. the melted slush where it splashes from one foot onto the other was not quite enough protection for me. but I think the tradeoff here is that the shoe could ventilate better in the summer. so a negative, but not a deal-breaker
Thanks for the comparison to the Peregrine. I did run 2 50ks in Peregrine 12s, but yeah, if there's any road or hard surface, they are very firm and pretty rough. On dirt and soft surfaces, Peregrine is money though. Catamount looks interesting!
loved the also consider section, I'm currently trying to choose a shoe for a 30 mile trail ultra and my current innov8 x talon 255's are just not cushioned enough. great video
Loved the nimbleness of the OG Catamount for the roots and rocks up here in New England, but the upper felt like it trapped in heat and moisture. Looks like the upper is similar in the second version 🙁
I know you loved the 1. Appreciate this review. Respectfully, try the Naked T/r. Brooks did an upgrade. Naked has made a qualitative improvement in technical trail-running that you might appreciate. Thanks, Troy from Falcon Ridge, Colorado.
Looks like a pretty sweet update. Would you say the foam is about the same firmness is the 1? I found the 1 to be a fun shorter run shoe and would start to feel harsh around 2 hrs
I love Brooks 😁, so , not to bash you review ............but the Brooks Cascadia 16 is only $129 . I run in the winter in the snow/sleet/rain in the Cascadia 16 GTX (gore tex version) that retails for $160. That is a super capable waterproof shoe for less than the catamounts. Also there is the Brooks Caldera, a max cushion trail shoe. Either way you are getting a great shoe.
Good review. One minor thing. I think Saucony Xodus Ultra is a better alternative to Catamount 2 than Peregrine 12. Especially, Xodus Ultra with PWRRUN PB inner core makes makes it a bit more fun to run on harder surfaces than Peregrine.
I'm a big fan of the Peregrines but my 12s uppers ate wearing out fast. I'd get these being a fan of Hyperion Tempos but concerned about their grip and water retention. Great review, much appreciated 👍🏻
Thanks for the great review. Which shoe would you say is better between the Tecton X and Catamount 2 in terms of: 1. Versatility for slower trail running? 2. Road to trail runs (1-2 miles asphalt/pavement to get to a trail)? Thanks in advance!
Do you think this is an ultra run shoe? or, what do you think the mileage cap would be before switching to a more ultra distance (if you don't think this would be good for that)
I think v2 is better on roads, but neither is my favorite for road to trail. consider the ultra superior, hoka torrent, or NB More trail, or peg trail 4
Don't think there's any reason a trail shoe should have more than 30mm of stack height. Especially on more technical terrain that's a rolled ankle waiting to happen. Might be OK for road to hard packed trails.
Enjoyment is a pretty good reason, and I enjoy this shoe. It might not be for you, and that’s ok. Maybe try it though? You might find you like it. Worst case scenario, you can confirm that it won’t work for you.

I think the Catamount 2 is more trail capable than the prior version. I hope I can get in some more rigorous testing and update the opinion soon

Great review and I’m excited to see that brands are starting to show ultra and trail runners some love !!!
Brooks is the missionary position of shoes lol.

as someone who ran in the adrenaline series for 5 years....i see no lie here.
this is funny
Gets the job done...
🤣🤣 what does this even mean
Looks like a fun shoe!

Where do you get the lug depth from? Everything I can find online says 4mm so an extra .5mm

peregrine is fun when you want to rip through muddy trails as fast as possible
@@kofuzi absolutely. Mud rockets.
I think Saucony Xodus Ultra is more relevant comparison. I have both but Xodus Ultra is easier on the road with its shallower lugs.
loved the also consider section, I'm currently trying to choose a shoe for a 30 mile trail ultra and my current innov8 x talon 255's are just not cushioned enough. great video
Hope you have a great race!
I really liked the Cat 1. Perfect shoe for light trails. Might get this one at some point.
Loved the nimbleness of the OG Catamount for the roots and rocks up here in New England, but the upper felt like it trapped in heat and moisture. Looks like the upper is similar in the second version 🙁
Yea similar

thanks for the suggestion!
Awesome!
Ryan is a beast!
My bad bro! Happens when Im watching two contents simultaneously 🤣 BTW just bought this shoes. More power!
I love my Catamount first version

It feels softer underfoot
🤔🤔 Brooks is a shoe brand that I don’t have in my rotation. I need to give them a try for more that just a shoe store treadmill tryout 🤷🏻♂️
Good review! I like how you give other shoes to pair it with and other options of similar shoes. Thanks!👍👍
I'm glad that's helpful!

That lace thingy is called a lace garage. These shoes have definitely sparked my interest but that price point... yikes! Great review, Mike!
I always thought a lace garage was a little pocket that sits on the top of the tongue for extra lace length to get tucked inside
@@kofuzi oh yeah that may be. Maybe it refers to anything that holds the laces in place? I know our Saucony rep has always called it a lace garage.

I haven’t run in it, so it’s outside of my reference library, so to speak
@@kofuzi Understood. Hopefully you can test Xodus Ultra 2 when it comes out.
I'm a big fan of the Peregrines but my 12s uppers ate wearing out fast. I'd get these being a fan of Hyperion Tempos but concerned about their grip and water retention. Great review, much appreciated 👍🏻
The lugs are not as aggressive as the Peregrine
HI
Thanks for the review
How would you compare this to the speedgoat 5 ?
hmmmm. not exactly. it's kind of in-between a torrent and the SG, maybe.
Thanks for the great review. Which shoe would you say is better between the Tecton X and Catamount 2 in terms of:
1. Versatility for slower trail running?
2. Road to trail runs (1-2 miles asphalt/pavement to get to a trail)?

Definitely Tecton X
like the name, for $170 I better see a catamount when I'm out on the trails. They're the sweetest of all cats.
Do you think this is an ultra run shoe? or, what do you think the mileage cap would be before switching to a more ultra distance (if you don't think this would be good for that)
Kofuzi, what are the running tights you’re using in this review? Specifically the ones with the red at the bottom of the legs?
Janji groundwork tight v1. it's a few years old.
@@kofuzi thanks 😊
How does the speedgoat 5 compare?
I’m looking for a hybrid shoe, light trails and road. Would the 1st version be a good option? I’m afraid the rock plate will bother me on the road
I think v2 is better on roads, but neither is my favorite for road to trail. consider the ultra superior, hoka torrent, or NB More trail, or peg trail 4
They should have made it Gortex
in the summer, I think I won't mind that it's not goretex. but in wintry slush, I really did wish it was
Don't think there's any reason a trail shoe should have more than 30mm of stack height. Especially on more technical terrain that's a rolled ankle waiting to happen. Might be OK for road to hard packed trails.
