Not only is his footwork itself wonderful, but combined with his forehand and very long arms, there we have one of the strongest olympic champions of all time. A combination of born talent and perspiration.
Man I miss young RSM. :) If you ever watch that Olympic gold medal match he had with Wang Hao, you can see just how quick & on fire he was. Was able to run around everything and his forehand visibly had more speed & power than Wangs that match. Thanks for uploading this.
thank you very verry much for this great compilation and specially for not adding some stupid music to the videos. Its so nice to be able to hear the ball bounce !
i agree about the music, specially loud heavy metal type. in this video, you can hear the ball exploding off the rackets really appreciate how hard they hit.
he had such an amazing footwork and powerful forehand drive but couldn't play so in every single shot. His day was short but he was a symbol and pride of penholder since. . .
4:46 show this to someone who say TT isnt a real sport. It looks so simple because the high angle shots takes away the perspection of distance and speed, but from this angle it looks absolutely insane!
Was in Zagreb in 07 for the WC. His semi with Wang Li Win was outta this world. Mind you, so was the final with Ma Lin and Wang. Hopefully the new ball will slow things down. The Chinese with the bh flick have been killing rallies before they get started in recent years.
I miss the highlights you could get only from the J-pen players. I know it's not viable long-term for the players, but it was amazing for the fans to watch.
well dont care what others feel but i agree hes got one of the best footworks...and this post says that.it doesnt concern about his grip or what he did..footwork is simply superb.also would like to mention that joo se hyuk the legend has equally good footwork as all defenders should hav..he can cover so much of space in bliknk of eye.and that guy who says only 1 memorable olympic...yeah how many people hav won 2 olympic golds in singles...and in that era it was quite difficult with the wangs and mas still very much ruling the world.
Really? Every other player in the time focused on attacking the ball and willing using their power and spin, Waldner used his brain- he used their power against them and won though control and placement, he had a very different playing style to others
All players use their brain to utilize control and placement. That's just not enough to get the point for them, so they resort to other things more often than waldner does. Obviously, if you can end the point on your serve or with a simple block, everybody would do it. The thing is that only Waldner could.
OMG look at the video quality of Olympics 2008, so gooood, way better than nowadays, and we are in 2017 ==' Everything gets better, except table tennis video quality/framerate :((
The only player who makes Chinese go on the defensive. RSM is what happens if you remove all points from backhand offense and double down on speed and forehand.
Maybe I don't know about what "footwork" is. But I think Ryu Seung Min's strength has more to do with athletism. He actually made mistakes with his reading of the game, but his legs saved him in those cases. He was a natural. Today his successors would be Xu Xin, Mizutani or Aruna ... Ma long has the perfect footwork, even if he's not as fast going sideways.
Hey Top 8TT, could you please make a compilation of Traditional penhold backhand smashes? Like the ones seen at 0:21, 2:59, 3:56, 5:51. This particular shot is dying out. Not as effective as RPB, but spectacular due to the difficulty it requires to pull off successfully.
And I've seen a player drilling mid distance.loop to loop using traditional backhand. According to RSM's technique, such a drill must've.been a breeze for him
Man, that's incredible, there needs to be more studying done on how to promote different grip styles and playing styles through rule changes. Shake hand offensive is just far too dominant in the current ruleset. All these styles are still viable in amateur play but aren't as popular only because less pros use them.
Ryu and a few Korean penholders are really fast but this is also true with penhold players from other countries. Xu Xin is the immediate player I can think of and so is Ma Lin. Can we recall Guo Yue Hua and Jiang Jia Liang? Jiang being a smasher, he played close to the table and he possesses cat-like side to side movements.
That was in team event. From Beijing 2008 Olympic team events replaced doubles events. In singles Ryu lost in the third round (his first match) to Ko Lai Chak penholder from Hong Kong 4:2. Thank you for comment Christian Adrian Aniceta!
A player who inspired me to learn table tennis. One of the favorite athletes ever. Much love and much respect
Not only is his footwork itself wonderful, but combined with his forehand and very long arms, there we have one of the strongest olympic champions of all time. A combination of born talent and perspiration.
JSH and RSM, the two odd balls of Korea
Each presents a unique style of play
Of course I'd heard of him before but never really watched too much of him. Now I realize how great of a player he was.
City pery

Soper79 He was amazing
His footwork is dope then...
Waldner said he is in a different world then...
thank you very verry much for this great compilation and specially for not adding some stupid music to the videos. Its so nice to be able to hear the ball bounce !
Thank you for comment and for watching! Enjoy!
Top 8 TT from which country are you? Because you use german commented clips so often... 😂
Stupid music... Can't agree with that anymore! I sometime have to watch those clips with mute on!
i agree about the music, specially loud heavy metal type. in this video, you can hear the ball exploding off the rackets really appreciate how hard they hit.
he had such an amazing footwork and powerful forehand drive but couldn't play so in every single shot. His day was short but he was a symbol and pride of penholder since. . .
Oh my...
Speechless!
He is so dynamic and fast player.
What an amazing player.
Ryu had beautiful footwork and was blessed with long arms as well.
The reason why Seungmin Yoo is good is that regardless of whether he is good or bad, the game is powerful and fun, so it is fun to watch.
No one can play this style like him anymore.(In 40+plastic era) Rocket kill shot style with fast footwork!!
What a great footwork... he must be one of the fastest player in table tennis history
Korea is proud of RSM
he is best foot-work player in table tennis ever . amazingly fast.
4:46 show this to someone who say TT isnt a real sport. It looks so simple because the high angle shots takes away the perspection of distance and speed, but from this angle it looks absolutely insane!
4:45 Oh my god, I miss that speed glue sound...
3:36 the topspin after the netball was so insane. incredibly fast movement but still technically great topspin.
04:46 crazy!
Both handwork and footwork are amazing!
in my opinion, ryu seung min is the fastest table tennis player . . . .ever. . .
@Chang your mommy ccuuunnnttt
@Chang I think you are to go to
Mental hospital
@Chang he is chinese
That opinion is not in,but it in everyone's opinion
absolutely agreed 💖
the only non chinese ace
He is only player that plays more attacking against chinese (loved him)
Now we hv haritomo 😁
@@sidwdlc6918 harimoto is Chinese tf you talking about 😂
@@sidwdlc6918 He is originally chinese bruh. maybe you are just a new TT fan
one of the all time great forehands too.
Footwork is the foundation for tennis, but not so much stressed in table tennis
came here after watching Run BTS to watch his playing skills lmaooooo. He's on fire!!
i does the same ☺
Me too!!!!!!!!!
@@fahadsiyal6225 ohh same same

Ryu when he won the olympic gold medal and Joo Se Hyuk vs Kong 2003, my toplist of best fotwork!
At 3'56" - Ryu said - I don't need reverse penhold loop, traditional one-side rubber is enough for me to beat you!
You are really terrific , Ryu Seung Min
ユスンミンかっこよすぎる
日ペンフットワーク全振りスタイルで世界ランク最高二位とか漫画の主人公かよ
It just looks like hes floating over the Ground when he steps around his backhand with his forehand
Here from BTS Run Ep138. Watching this out of curiosity and I am impressed how good he is!!!
i watch his videos on tt tips since i started playing, and he was really a beast when he was younger, a real role model athlete
4:42これやられたら泣くわ
He is my favorite TT master.
That crab-like steps of Ryu at 5:58 astonishes me every time I see it
Figaro Holy shit that really looked like crab

no we are not, we are just here for some quality jpen content and footwork. not because we are disgusting bts fans
I hope in the future of there is some one will play penholder like him.
I really like your compilation.

Korean Legendary penholder!
看柳承敏打球就感觉很有激情!
God bless you, Ryu! ......thank you very much for your wonderful table tennis 🙏

Being pen holder without backhand has to have footwork like this :(
Don't forget at his peak his unforced errors are less compared to others and also has some level of ball placement.
His too fast
If he could utilize the other side of the racket in his backhand, he could have made history.
@@henrytan5707 If he had a backhand he wouldn't have such great footwork.
@@henrytan5707 no, if you play both sides of the racket, the racket has to be thinner, so your forehand would be less powerfully like Wang Hao.
シュシンみたいなかっこよさはないけどこの人にしかないかっこよさにじみ出てるよね
Would love to see him at his best and Xu Xin at his face off. IMO, there no other two better footwork masters in the game.
The man Chinese truly feared and respected I guess.
Chinese RSM fan here😆
I think he was the stongest olympic champion of all time.
I love Korea :)
Amazing! ! ! ! !
You should do a video on Deceptive Shots, like faking spin on a serve or redirecting a hit.
Haha, that would be just basically be 10 minutes of Waldner :D
Lol, it kinda is what everyone wants to see- he is so different from everyone else
lol, no. Waldner wasn't different at all from anyone else, he was just better.
Really? Every other player in the time focused on attacking the ball and willing using their power and spin, Waldner used his brain- he used their power against them and won though control and placement, he had a very different playing style to others

3:54 insane
really awesome
They shouldn't have EVER changed the ball: 4:43

I don't get it. What's that sound of at the specific moment? I thought it's just thumping of the foot.
they changed the ball so European players could catch up to Asian players
@@nisargbhatt4967 he is talking about the amount of spin on the ball
@@bryanzeng8187 They've failed. Asian players still dominate. The only difference is that TT is now less diverse because of penhold's decline.
unbelievable footwork and 3rd ball attack .. perhaps the best from a PH, a last and dying breed.
His swing speed is the fastest in the world.

Best of best!!!
ポストキムテクスの大役を見事完遂したと思う。問題ないけど今の韓国はシェークドライブ型ばかりになったね。
I’m so bad with my backhand that I should try the Japanese penhold
You will have a better backhand with the reverse penhold where you use both sides of raquet, at least I did.

Honest question is pen holding more optimal? Meaning can you get more spin and speed from it compared to holding it normally.
a potência do ataque de um caneteiro é incrível!
Great penhold player, but I say Wang Hao still greatest ever, and with that REVERSE penhold style. Robert at 67.
