When you look at how many Radio's have come and gone since the RCI2950/2970 first came on the market it is amazing how well the design has aged. Sure the origanal design had many 2-3 generations of board but it lasted a long long time. Then the 2950DX/2970DX came out and those hae been gong strong with minor revisions every couple of years. The switch to mosfet and non-Toshiba bipolars and the color of the display being the big changes. When you look at the less than phenomenal designs that do not last it is amazing. Do not get me wrong the RCI2950 has never been perfect but when looking at Export Radio's and SSB CB's nothing else even comes close for bang for the buck. Freq. range, dual vfo's, good receive, rock solid ssb stability, great AM audio better than average SSB audio, variable power, large easy to read display, lots of adjustment of freq. making an unlocked clarifier unneeded 10,11 and 12 meter coverage etc.....I have never understood why anyone would chose a more expensive Galaxy with less features, no SSB stability, a 5 digit counter and a smaller total bandwidth and less flexibility in tuning that band width. I especially never got the idea of a more expensive AM or AM/FM only radio that cost more??? I think the last time the RCI2950 had a real equal was the President Lincoln, HR2510 etc....They had similar band width back then, similar output power etc. Build quality being better with the Uniden but the RCI having more features. Today it is comical the new Lincoln II and Grant II even though newer designs and not at all being cheap they are not even close to the RCI2950DX3 in any catagory they are grossly inferior other than being smaller. Even on the CB front there is not a single SSB CB radio that has rock solid SSB stability and great audio on SSB today! If you want GREAT AM audio and ok SSB audio you still do not have any good choices not if you want them to be stabil on SSB. I live in a cold climate and operate mobil more than I care too and when it is -28 to 32F for almost 5 months who has time for a unit that drifts badly with temp. changes or takes a long time to warm up and settle down? Uniden should be ashamed to even put their name on the Bearcat 980 the receive is terrible, channel rejection is terrible, they come from the factory with the final bias set wrong, the AM and SSB audio is terrible....I think they are stable on SSB though. LOL Oh most of them the SWR bridge does not work from the factory.

The new Lincoln and the new Grant are nothing more than week emitations that's it. lots of problems ever so often they come out with a new version. because they haven't totally corrected the problems. yet I tell everyone save your money get the tride, true , tested and legendary best radio for CB sideband,Outside of a full blown amateur ham Radio. RCI Ranger hands down is the best. Period. Oscilloscope modulation pattern is extremely close, as close can get to a Amateur radio. Some amateur radio enthusiast are actually using RCI radios on 10 meter and 12 meter. Go with the best. Go with Rci Ranger. Nuff said 426 BIG RED. 73s from central Indiana. Happy DXing.
I have had a couple of the orange faced 2950's and still run one. I can't emagine a better DX radio! I run barefoot with a Wilson 2000 and 8X mini coax. GREAT reports every day, in country and out of country. That said, I have a 2970N2 in transit to me now. If it does any better than my 2950 I'll be overwhelmed !
Ok. Here it is. I sold my original 2950 . I have been using the 2970N2 for awhile now and its great. I think they are no better than original 2950 with a 250 watt kicker. Just less space needed. Plus, sometimes when I get in the truck after work, the built in cooling fan for the mosfets is running. Mounted in dealing. But other than that, no complaints. I live on top of a 6,500 ft. mountain with A LOT of 4x4 activity and frequent calls for help. I have dedicated HF rigs and one was actually needed last winter when an individual and his father and his father's girlfriend decided they were going to go 4x4ing in a blizzard. No kidding. Darwin's theory at work. I ended up using a Yaesu FT-2000 that puts out 25 watts on AM to communicate with them. Completely legal since it was a declared emergency. And it WAS an emergency! A long story shortened, fire dispatch received a call that a ham radio operator was in distress. I could not locate him on the radio and called dispatch and got the phone number to what turned out to be a CB radio operator listening to the call for help. I jumped in and handled the emergency. They were hopelessly stuck, soaking wet, and hypothermic. I stayed on the radio with them for 11 hours while communicating directly with the fire Battalion Chief on the fire net where I am authorized as well. It took that long to get a rescue team to them. Otherwise I don't go down to the 11-meter band. I didn't work so hard to get a ham license to go play on the CB band. But I do want a dedicated radio. What do you recommend that's comparable?
the 2970n2 is the best radio on the market currently for ssb function. the 148 is a good choice too but is lacking quality these days with newer versions... 2970n2 stock mic sucks balls. must talk into it with a loud voice or it doesn't get in the radio. i wouldn't recommend any smaller then a ps-52kx pyramid power supply. my amp meter will go to the power supplys max on a high note. otherwise its a very good performer as long as the peak and tune isn't too high
