  • This week's older board game gem is Carolus Magnus, another game from 2000. Nominated for the SdJ that year, it's simple to learn, moves at a brisk pace, and is deliciously thinky - and is still one of the best three-player board games ever made.

    Board Gems is a weekly (sometimes more often) video series highlighting board games that aren't talked about much any more - maybe they're a bit old (though not usually crazy old), or maybe they didn't make a big splash when they came out - anyway, the hobby has moved on from them. But they're still great games today, and deserve another look.

    You are my favorite channel on the Internet right now. I am a huge fan of old euro games and love seeing games that I haven’t heard of or seen other videos for. I have never played a Colovini game and this may be the one that I want to try.

      Thanks for the kind words! This is one of Colovini's most celebrated games, and will be returning as Eriantys. Another one well-regarded is Bridges of Shangri-La, which has been requested and I will get to too someday! There are also lighter games like Cartagena and Clans/Fae. Cheers!

    Just managed to source a copy of this (in shrink!), cannot wait to get it to the table.

    I agree it's such an elegant game, like to play anytime! Easiest than Clans! Not a problem for me to adapt myself to the cubes I get

    This looks really interesting! Gives me Princes of Florence vibes - beige, maybe dated look but with funky mechanics that seem to blend together well. Definitely seems like a gem!

    Thanks for the video. Nice series, specially for the 'old dinos' from the origins of the Euros :)...
    Leo Colovini has some neat games.
    I really like addressing the neg comments to the game, it provides with a lot of useful information and understanding of the game.

    A rather unknown game with great design and well thought out!! I cannot find it to purchase it.. but would actually be interested in it.
    My only complain is the tag-team part beyond 3 players. Thanks for covering it! Good critique as well.
    EDIT: For anyone interested, this seems to have been reimplemented in ERIANTYS with a "worse" theme. Surprising can't find the RioGrande version.

      I don't mind the 4p team way of playing, but team play isn't for everyone.
      Eriantys is worth checking out if you don't mind the foofy fairy-tale setting. I do. 🙂
      Besides the Rio Grande version, you can also look for Winning Moves, the original publisher. I've had two copies in my possession, one RGG and one WM. No difference except for languages.

    Nice overview. I've been playing this on yucata.de after a mention on the svwag podcast and it's been a great find! Would love to add to my collection some day.

    Currently trying to trade my copy of imhotep for it, as I feel I might get more out of this than that. I love the concept of merging the tiles and you make a really great case for the dice (where others that encourage you to try CM do so with the caveat that you should do away with the dice and use the 'drafting' cubes variant.

    • @BoardGems
      @BoardGems  3 года назад

      I've heard good things about the drafting variant. But I encourage you to try it as-is a few times first. If you try the rules as written and find you don't quite care for it, the variant may make the game more to your liking. But maybe you'll like it just the way it is! I know I do.

    This look interesting! Why are some configurations of four-hex-ominoes missing? I.E: Four in a row or four in C-shape? I'd be interested to understand the game design reasoning behind the tile shapes.

    • @BoardGems
      @BoardGems  2 года назад +1

      Actually the shapes don't have any gameplay meaning! It's just to make them interlock ever-so-slightly. The newly-announced version, called Eriantys, just uses simple single hexes.

    This is a great instructional video. I'm playing it on yucata.de but would love to find a physical copy.

      Thanks for the compliment! If you don't mind a used copy, it shouldn't be too hard to find. There are more people on BGG looking to trade their copies away than there are people on BGG wanting it in trade. Cheers!

      You mean kids these days don't play pretending to be Frankish kings? Man, in my day, all the kids wanted to be Charlemagne! Poor Paul got frequent nosebleeds, so the other kids always made him play Carloman.
