My first Online Instructional Course is here! limibjj.mykajabi.com/course
I have spent the past few months focused on passing half guard and am happy to announce that I have compiled all of my findings to create my first instructional course! My goal is to give you a clear game plan and training methods to transform your guard passing
Another incredible video. You’re the best breakdown guy on RUclips
Thank you Brandon 🙌🏼 appreciate the kind words and the support!
He’s like BJJ Scout 2.0, and you’re pretty awesome yourself Brandon
@@thedopesickshow he’s the new and improved BJJ scout
Agreed BMac! We need to see y’all collab soon.
I’m a little concerned about you two’s relationship. He just got married, bro. Slow down
ADCC 2022 was so refreshing. I don't have the stats, but it feels like we're back to a meta where Jiujitsu works. I endured a decade worth of ADCCs where, outside of a few exceptional competitors, takedown & stall was the norm.
My perspective is that we have Danaher to thank for this. His biggest contribution was introducing gripping sequences into the NoGi game. If you guys remember the 2003-2015 era of ADCC, the majority of the Gi based competitors would always complain about how slippery NoGi and just accepted that getting submissions at that level was unrealistic. Submissions became seen as secondary and something that you'd use opportunistically or against low-tier opponents.
The meta evolved into "get 2 takedown points, don't engage in the guard". Only the very top of the food chain guys could beat this strategy and over time, guys like Sperry, Arona, Galvao and others countless adopted that style. Once everyone started playing that game, we started seeing the "aggressive collar-tie, stalemate, make the crowd suffer, win by advantage" meta. Thankfully, we saw the peak of that strategy in Sperry vs Liborio at ADCC 2015.
Danaher's emphasis on grip fighting sequences from Butterfly, Leg-Entanglements and the Back, brought the "Jiu-Jitsu" or Submission game back. Gordon's calculated, methodical and submission based approach is considered top-tier and people are emulating him. The strong guys like Kaynan are guard passing and winning definitively rather than stalling and winning by advantage like they did in yesteryear, and yet the scrappy opportunistic guys like the Ruotolos are finding success.
It's the healthiest meta yet.
Awesome comment and I agree 💯 it was an awesome event with so many amazing competitors
@@LIMIBJJ would love a video about the gripping techniques / meta since it's so a curical part of the game and in my eyes rarely covered in depth... So far I only seen snippets as well from Gordon's Instructionals
@@kaniran1 from any position in particular?
Yes. Not much longer until Danaher finishes evolving BJJ into Catch wrestling. First leg locks, and now emphasis on wrestling for takedowns and maintaining top position.
@@kaniran1 Danaher's DVD's put a huge emphasis on 2-on-1 gripping from guard. "He goes to pull away. It's shockingly difficult."
I remember on Reddit some people were screeching that Danaher's Back System DVD's were just "$200 for a grip fighting sequence".
Eddie Cummings is the best to study for their grip fighting sequences from Butterfly because he was so rigid and single minded with trying to get into the legs.
Yes I'd be interested to hear why you do not favour the chair sit, videos on the back, leg locks and guard passing are always appreciated 👌🏻
Coming up! Thanks for the comment and the support 🙌🏼
You sir, are the Gordon Ryan of breaking down techniques. Amazing video and I loved it. The part about how he uses the far side arm drag to set up either sumi gaeshis, inside sankaku or the back take was my favorite. I'm going to try to add this to my game since I love butterfly guard and arm drags too from seated guard. Keep up the great content!
Awesome! I am working on my next video about Choi bars. I think it works very well with that arm drag sequence so keep an eye out for that. Appreciate your support 🙌🏼
How long have you been doing bjj and what colour belt are you?
@@yourenotwrong3511 I've been training since 2007 but with long periods of off time here and there so I'm still a blue belt but I have my four stripes.
@@DontbeanNPC cool good job man. I have just started. I absolutely love it. Everything is all new to me. I am amazed by it really.
@@yourenotwrong3511 thanks and welcome to the family. I'm glad you are enjoying it. It gets addictive quickly. I know, for me, i got addicted and couldn't sleep when I first started because all I could think about was techniques and wanting to try them all night. That still happens to me sometimes even now. I still have my times when I don't feel like training for whatever reason but overall, I'm still addicted to it and I feel so much better when I am on the mats. I also really enjoy teaching and helping others learn it too.
Thanks for the shout outs brah 😂😂
Haha you got it my man! I have a Choi bar video in the works and you will definitely be in that one as well. It was awesome to watch you compete 🙌🏼
A wise man once said, "there's levels to this". The wise man was talking about Gordon Ryan. Great video bro, oss.
😂 amazing comment! Thanks for this!
These breakdowns are insane and the comment section is just as fire. Your building an awesome page and community.
Thank you! Yeah the people here are awesome. Very insightful comments! Let me know if you are interested in joining the discord
I feel like Gordon’s strategy as far as takedowns changes like I think of him and Andre was no time limit he would wrestle a little bit
Yeah for sure. Different rule sets different tactics
I keep seeing more of a consistency of backtracking: putting yourself back in half guard (opponent flattened out) and passing again. Not only will it add points, but it’s so freaking exhausting for the bottom guy to resist the pass from there. It’s much easier to win an underhook on a tight opponent by backtracking to half. I was originally taught “Always move forward, never give up a good position you worked so hard for!” But the more I watch your videos and New Wave instructionals, the more I realize the importance of giving a little to take back a lot more. Great breakdown dude, I’ve patiently waited so long for this.
Yeah exactly you are spot on 💯
Damn i really love your vids and the fact you've made a database blows my mind and it's on the level of big sports analytics, which even wrestling doesn't have
Yeah buddy! Still a long way to go but we are on the path to developing something special

I recently was at a seminar with Shawn Williams and we went over that Gordon Ryan vs Victor Hugo match. He said that yes the knee wasn't high enough, but also his hip angle was not correct. he was caught on his own leg because of this and wasnt able to pin Hugo's shoulder that was closest to him. If he wanted to correct this he needed to grab hugos close side leg and pull himself back into perpendicular allignment. Hard to do against a beast like Victor, but he might have gotten it if he did.
Very interesting. Thank you for this comment 🙌🏼
"the little neck that Andre has" had me laughing. Good point too: choking out Galvao must be a hell of a task.
Haha for real that has to be so difficult!
your growth is nothing short of amazing and its all because of the quality of your content. Good stuff and keep it going!

Awesome video, definitely not too long…
Haha thank you! I try not to go too much over 10 minutes. People start to drift off I think around then but I am glad you enjoyed it 🙌🏼
Wow, thanks so much for the shout out to the Twisted Church event! Advertising like this means the world to us and helps us spread the word! 🙏
Yeah the card is stacked! Can’t wait for the event 🙌🏼
A quick word on terminology: at our school we use "tactics" to specifically describe the expression of your active intention. When you pass the guard you are not mentally tbinking of every minute movement, you focus on the big stuff. Drilling specific techniques an nauseam will make more and more of the movement subconscious, which allows you to focus on the big pieces and make the right macro tactical decisuons. I think Gordon is super good, but also has drilled more than everyone else so that he can make extremely calculated on the fly decisions because the details were worked out beforehand. Super cool to watch.
Awesome thank you for the insightful comment!
I think it is this more "traditional" mindset that Danaher brings to his training methodologies that has resulted in so many high level competitors coming from under his tutelage. It's evidenced by a number of things, such of his use of traditional Japanese terminology, as well as the focus on drilling in combination with live rolling. I think this approach is going to become more widespread as time goes on. It is skill development that makes the best competitors, not just competition.
@@hardcaliber19 💯
Im addicted to this channel, I found it while i was high And i think it will def help my jiu jitsu
Hahaha yeah buddy. Let’s get it 👊🏼
What don't you like about the chair sit? Is there an alternative you like to use instead?
I think going to what Gordon calls a seated head and arm (sort of a gift wrap with both legs free). That way you can remain on top. This also gives you two unweighted legs to fight their defensive arm and trap it with your legs. This gives you rear triangles or arm trapped rear naked chokes. Hopefully less impressed can shed some more light on what he meant! Great video again
What he said 👆🏼
💯
@@MrJossdaboss Ok now I'm interested. Is that on Gordon's Back Control DVD?
@@thos1618 he covers that whole system on his back, turtle, and side control DVDs so any of those work

that analysis is on point so much subtle stuff I didn't even catch...
Awesome! Glad you found it helpful. Appreciate the comment and the support 🙌🏼
I believed Gordon would win, but I didn’t think he’d do it the way he did with a submission that took 8 seconds against one guy, pretty easily running through Nicky Rod, and smashing Andre Galvao. I figured Nicky Rod and Galvao would be squirrelly and that they’d have been stalling type of matches.
Yeah man me too. Gordon is so sticky and was able to get ahold of them sooner than I expected as well
That one key takeaway I got halfway through the video 👍
😂 you’re the man! Appreciate the support 🙌🏼
Some other trends I noticed at this ADCC were Choi Bar entries, De Ashi Harai, countering standing body locks with Uchi Matas, power half when attacking turtle and countering leg entanglements with unconventional leg locks (corkscrew lock, Estima Lock, Aoki Lock). High level stuff and can’t wait for the next breakdown 👍🏻
Choi bar is next and probably work my way down that list you just said. Awesome comment thank you 🙌🏼
Just got back from the gym and haven't even watched the video yet but I can already tell this is going to be a great one. I'm going to make some breakfast take a nice seat and really treat myself to some good BJJ content. Personally I feel it is a high risk/reward move.

This kind of thing is exactly what I need. I don't train bjj but love to watch it, becoming a bigger fan every day and I'm sure I'm missing out on appreciating what I'm seeing. You asked us to comment if we're interested in something, well I assure you I will greedily take all the breakdown in as much lengthy, painstaking detail as you're prepared to give. Fascinating stuff.
Awesome! I am curious how you got into watching BJJ when you don’t train. I think you are a rare breed in that sense haha
@@LIMIBJJ UFC. The more I watched the more intrigued I became of this deep and technical area, and the more I wanted to understand the subtleties, skill and tactics. A few RUclips suggestion wormholes later, watching instructionals to recognise chokes, Joe Rogan speaking of it religiously, then came across the Gordon, John and GSP interview and here we are :) Think GR's having a 'McGregor' effect of pulling nearby people in so I won't be a rare breed much longer, get ready for a boatload of us cos bjj is blowing up, you can see just from a clip of 2017 ADCC to this year, they're all rockstars now xD

Good lord BJJ has gotten so complicated.
I remember back in the early 2000s when I got into MMA and started paying attention to JJ, basic armbars, sweeps and triangles were mystifying people. The evolution of the sport has been absolutely insane.
Haha what a time to be a grappler!

Before I watch the video. I think it boils down to the fact Gordon is just steps ahead of his opponents at all times. Then you factor in the physical aspects and nobody has a chance. Like the fact his two heel hooks once he sunk them in his opponents didn’t even try to escape they just accepted it.
Also Gordon plays the ADCC rule set better than anybody.
Has a counter to your counters counter
💯

great vid i pulled my notes out.
Haha awesome! Glad you found it helpful! Thanks for the support 🙌🏼
My takeaways were how well Gordon prevented the turn & run tactics when playing seated inside guard. You see Nicky Rod kicks free the first couple of times, but then the third time, Nicky tries to make a big jump out of the leg entanglement and Gordon anchors his knee to the floor with his free hand -- he placed a wedge above Nicky's knee to use Danaher's parlance.
The second time, Nicky tries to leap vertically out of the rear DLR position, but Gordon anchors his ankle to the floor and he goes no where. Getting stifled when trying to make explosive movements is mentally and physically draining, and N-Rod looks defeated afterwards and hardly even fights the Inside Ashi.
I will have to go back and rewatch this. Thank you for the comment!
