By my count there are three separate things that can be attributed to Trump’s platform that would destroy the US, and therefore the world, economy: (1) Mass deportations + axing of certain employment based immigration programs. [bit unclear about the scope of the effects, since this disproportionately affects the food sector. Given the connections this sector has to others and its intrinsic importance to society, I tend to think that a collapse here would spell catastrophe.] (2) Across the board tariffs on imports. The switching costs alone in many sectors where we import would be too great to furnish the needed productive capacity in lieu of importing. Prices skyrocket in reaction, markets suffer major swings in anticipation. (3) Destruction of the admin. state. There has been some reporting on schedule F and the project 2025 platform. Much less so on the role of agencies and departments in making gov. contracts and coordinating different sectors of life-through regulation (already made more precarious through the overturning of Chevron)-and these roles, in light of the sheer amount of money spent by the US gov. annually-means that these being these agencies being seriously inhibited, or destroyed, would be devastating for the US economy. The problem really is that building up the infrastructure-the institutional procedures and personnel-needed in order to smooth out negative effects of dismantling whole swaths of the current admin. state are orders of magnitude above what the GOP is planning, at least with respect to the programs associated with project 2025. I don’t doubt that, in a vacuum, this problem might be course corrected in 4 years time. The problem is that the timescales at which things can be interrupted in such a non-local and abrupt fashion without significant and more diffuse consequences is far, far shorter. And since it is in general easier to break than make things, I think this possibility would spell doom for the economy. These, anyways, are outlines of why-even if I were conservative, instead of a “radical leftist”-I would think we are playing with fire this election.
