    Great Review Sagasu - the last months you led me back to the shoe design principles of less is more. And the benefit for me has been the discovery of the Adios 8 - i agree fantastic daily trainer. And the Super Blast is also my Shoe of the year. Seems a contradictory statement - but i think i over trained in plated super shoes the last 12 months and suffered as a result - deconditioning of the quads. And the attendant knee issues.

      The SB is a good “middle shoe” coming from plated shoe overuse. Familiar for the legs but different enough it retrains them. Outstanding shoe.

I also used to be a fan of the Boston series too… the Boston 9 is still my favorite running shoe of all time… but I’m very uninterested in the direction Adidas has taken that series. The B12 is better than the B10/11 but, as I said in the video… the AP3 is a better long run and tempo shoe…. And the A8 is a better workout and interval shoe + daily run shoe…. And if I want a true daily trainer from Adidas… I’m going to go for the Adizero SL as it is just foam and has no rods or stiffening agent (which I don’t want to run in daily).

    Tekumi sen is a favourite of mine. I found it was harsh at the start but it has certainly mellow out now after 100ish km. Now at 100mi it is buttery smooth for me. But magic speed 3 is my favourite speed/ /tempo/racing shoe, so under rates. I have clocked so much km in it.
    Ultrafly I believe is a misunderstood shoe i feel. So many reviewers are not ultra trail runner. There is a big difference to even other trail races let alone road.
    Superblast is pretty good, i think it is great it is great at marathon effort for me but thats it. But it is a tall bloke and i am trying not to run many max stack shoe.
    Trailrock245, they dont make it anymore, is my go to minimalist trail shoe, which i have tried to use sparingly. Material used is so durable but not the glue 😅.
    AF1 is my best shoe, i dont have issue like many complained about. It does everything for me slow to workout to race on the road.
    Slab pulsar is the best road and trail shoe. It is pretty good on the road, you can even do a descent 5k but also nimble for the trail. Just did a HM on sunday with 800m elevations, some technical terrain, river crossing...etc and it took it. Just dont take it on rain day in the trails.

    • @SagasuRunning
      @SagasuRunning  6 месяцев назад

      The midsole feel of the TS9 has always been good to me. It’s more the extreme fit they is harsh… plus the shoe overall is harsh on the feet in legs… but it feels great when you hit it just right with good form.
      I agree about the Ultrafly. I’m going to talk about that fact in my review coming up.
      My one problem with the SB is the max stack. I don’t think the shoe needs all of that foam. I’d love to see a 39/31@8mm drop SB2… the shoe would loose even more weight and I doubt any performance.

    • @m.ch4rmaland3r10
      @m.ch4rmaland3r10 6 месяцев назад

      @SagasuRunning I agree if they lower the stack similar to tekumi, that would be interesting.
      Ultrafly has a specific market. With the low lug depth and focus on ultra it is targeting specific trail and races. I don't think it is the best ultra shoe, but it was designed and tested for a need like tekumi. When you run 50-70km plus let along 100mi, the need is different. Add in trail terrain, it is quite different. Running a 30km or less and saying it is a brick doesn't sum it up, in my opinion.

    • @SagasuRunning
      @SagasuRunning  6 месяцев назад

      @@m.ch4rmaland3r10 I fully agree. The Ultrafly is not the best trail shoe. But it’s a very good shoe designed for what Nike intended it for… so yes, very niche like the Takumi Sen 9… maybe more so.
      A lower stack Superblast would be a thing of beauty for training and some racing….

    I wish I could get on with the Vaporfly 3 but I just couldn’t. You covered the outsole in one of my shoes destructing at the rear and gave a very convincing explanation of why that might be. The retailer replaced the shoes and it happened again on my second pair after just 2 uses (a 10k and a marathon). I have now replaced them again but this time I got the Hoka Rocket X2.
    I hope the Nike fixes the outsole tread pattern in the VF4.

      I remember. Wow, you did it again. That’s crazy. Our personal biomechanics can be total deal breakers for some shoes it seems.
      At this point I can’t see how Nike doesn’t address that terraced design in the VF4. That being said I’m unsure if the VF4 will be just an upper swap or a completely new shoe. Nike seems to be more to complete redesigns after 16-18 months for the Alphafly and (likely) the Vaporfly on alternating cycles.
      How is the Hoka holding up for you?

    Good to hear your thoughts. As you say these things partly depend on what you have and partly what you like. For instance, I have seen Boston 12 top a similar list. I ran 12 miles today in them today and thought well if it is truly the best 2023 offered it was a terrible year for shoes. To me it is more of a cheap Adios Pro 3 with inferior foam that makes it rather stiff and inflexible and a lot heavier. Then I see ASICS shoes get very high for you but the Superblast was never made in my size and the Magic Speed 3 has been "greyed out" everytime I look. Thinking about I think, for me, it wasn't a great year for shoes. I enjoyed the Vaporfly 3 once had pulled in the laces an awful lot. The upper might be great for some but for me, out of the box, way too much excess material. Prime X2 Strung and Ultrafly undoutedly bricks of the year for me. Can't really decide which was worse. Perhaps the Endorphin Elite surprised me the most. I initially did not get it as so expensive but glad I did although I still prefer the Vaporfly 3 given a choice. Rocket X2 is another "decent" offering but kind of feel it got more acclaim for being a good Hoka rather than a good shoe full stop. That is kind of the case with the Boston 12 given it courted more favour than the 10 and 11. Not sure these days how many actually remember the 1 to 9. At least the Adios 8 gives us that sort of feeling. Like you though I rather had stopped using it. Might get it out again.

    • @SagasuRunning
      @SagasuRunning  6 месяцев назад +1

      As I said in the video… as long as the AP3 and A8 exist… I have no need for the B12. Even with the horrid upper the AP3 is my preferred long run or long tempo shoe. Even if I loved the B12… I still don’t know why I’d not reach for the AP3. Plus the AP3 is so durable. I’m a big advocate of training in what you plan to race. The AP3 and LSP are definitely durable enough to do it all.
      I know you disliked the Ultrafly… but it’s a very purpose built shoe for a very specific purpose… and it does that exceptionally well. I’ll have my general impressions video out the week.
      The other issue with the B12… is that I remember the B9…. And it’s still my favorite running shoe of all time. I can’t forgive Adidas for what they did to that shoe!
      The A8 does give me B9 feel… but the Nnormal Kjerag really nails it. I did alot of trial running in the B9 as well and always found it capable there too. The Kjerag has a very similar feel on trail and road for me. It’s a bit uncanny.
      I do still see B9 around, in Adidas stores,here in Taiwan. Usually the white BAA colorway, oddly. If I ever find them in my size I will definitely buy a pair and do a retro review. I miss that shoe so.

    • @TimGrose
      @TimGrose 6 месяцев назад

      @@SagasuRunning yeah I have done a fair amount of "easyish" running in the AP3 and prefer it to the B12 for sure. I just think I need to see what everybody "sees" in the B12 but yet to! Ultrafly I guess does not scale well to a UK 13 and a narrow footed one at that and TBH a shoe that was really designed for runable 100 mile ultra trail races is probably just as useless to me as track spikes are for you. I just can't think I can "ensure" that shoe for too long - just so heavy and wide. I could see in your size would be somewhat more compelling. Not sure what I would use for that sort of event though. The Nnormal one looks more like it. I do see they do a UK 13 but again rather niche for me and just got interest in ultra trail races if being really honest. I did "sort of" like the adidas Speed Ultra as very like the "old" Bostons but now may feel a bit firm. Kind of depends on the terrain though. Sadly the B9 never came in a UK 13.5 and my days of "sqeezing" into shoes are gone I feel. A8 will have to do there for sure.

    • @SagasuRunning
      @SagasuRunning  6 месяцев назад +1

      @@TimGrose Ya the UF is a shoe most people have no use for, honestly. Even the Ultra community is a bit divided on the use for it. But as a shoe to race western states… it’s perfection. But very few of us are doing that.
      I’d be curious about your thoughts in the Kjerag. I remember you covered the Pulsar back after SJD’s Pikes Peak win. The Kjerag is way less niche, and given that you like racing flats of old and have some time in the Pulsar… your perspective would be interesting.
      The Kjerag runs long as well… so I bet you might even be able to go down from the 13… the width isn’t as narrow as a s/lab shoe… I’d say it’s somewhere between the Takumi Sen 9 and a classic Adidas racing flat fit. It actually also reminds me of the Boston 9 in how it fits (I thought it’s much more flexible).

    • @brianreiter5572
      @brianreiter5572 6 месяцев назад +1

      I think Tim is going to have a challenge to squeeze into the Kjerag at the largest size on offer. 30.5cm which they are calling a “UK 13”. But I went a half size down to “US 12.5” and while I can run in them they are at least a half size short.
      I normally would wear a 31cm shoe in most brands. I think the 30.5cm is my size.
      Tim may be succeed because he has a very narrow foot but I suspect the largest Kjerag is going to be a tight squeeze.

      I have both and I don’t like the VN2 at all. Which is a shame, cause I was super excited to try it following so much appraisal from people and shoetubers alike.
      I swear it’s not a brand thing, I think Puma has always been super cool before they got into the running market. The deviate nitro 2 works great for some stuff and it’s amazing, but as for the VN2, I found it clunky, super slow and horrible-looking (which is obviously unimportant). And since I live in a scorching hot shithole, it becomes simply unusable in spring and summer, it must get like 120 degrees inside when I run on hot asphalt.
      I must make a honorable mention for the grip, though, which is unmatched in my experience.

      These things are rather indivdual. I tried the Puma Velocity Nitro 2. Not bad out of the box but even after one run I could feel my toes against the road and by 100 miles felt it had gone "flat" all round so gave up on it. Peg 39 and 40 less "exciting" but by miles run must have liked them both an awful lot more.

    • @ucatani
      @ucatani 6 месяцев назад +1

      @@TimGrose You’re absolutely right. So right that what I like about the pegs is precisely the fact that they are dull, not too cushioned or bouncy and “don’t do much for my runs,” as Ben Parkes said (and he’s totally right), That’s exactly what I look out for in daily trainers, something that requires me to focus on form, doesn’t make me faster and takes a heavy toll on my feet and leg muscles. This may sound weird, but I don’t typically want to have fun, I don’t want to feel excited, I don’t want help going faster. Obviously being 170 pounds and never having suffered an injury in 12 years help me stay minimalistic, and maybe the fact that I ran my first 10 HMs on Nike Flex RNs, which I bought for 20 bucks back then. And then again, for race days, I have the Vaporflies, which are obviously an entirely different experience.

      Generally speaking…. Take a look at Topo Athletic. They have a wider toe box you’ll be comfortable with but modern foams and geometries. It’s likely your best place to start.

    Adios Pro with strung upper incoming?

    • @SagasuRunning
      @SagasuRunning  6 месяцев назад +1

      I think it’s unlikely, at least for the primary release version, maybe a special edition version only. The strung upper is an experiment for Adidas and not a serious race upper. Also Adidas has gone another direction with ultra lightweight material on the Evo 1.
      But, what I do think we could see is the strung fibers being strategically used to reinforce the ultra lightweight material used on the Evo 1…. For a larger and more durable consumer release of the Evo or possibly on the AP4 or AP5.
      That’s the real value of strung technology. Not as a full upper.

    • @sschwen8050
      @sschwen8050 6 месяцев назад

      Interesting thoughts. I love the strung upper on the Prime X1 and I’d love to try it or some version of it on the Adios Pro.

    • @SagasuRunning
      @SagasuRunning  6 месяцев назад

      @@sschwen8050 If they ever make a “special version” you’ll likely see it. It’s a tech flex for them and looks premium…
      But the upper on the Evo 1 is a huge step in a better direction for the brand. A lighter upper that is more compliant on the foot is something they have needed for years.
      Combining the two techs… or using lighter fibers on a strung upper may be what we see.

      @@RowOfMushyTiT Agree. The Kiger has always been the Nike Trial race shoe or agile trainer. The Ultrafly and Zegama basically take the race duties and the Wildhorse is the better all rounder people reach for. It’s left the Kiger with a bit of an identity crisis for sure.

      Tell me your thoughts on it. Why do you like it?

    • @brianreiter5572
      @brianreiter5572 6 месяцев назад

      It is a no-no sense moderate stack, inherently stable, firm midsole with a nice geometry similar to a Pegasus. Good manners for daily training and long runs. I think the midsole is a supercritical EVA but certainly firmer than typical. The peba is actually thicker than typical sock liner which mostly just takes the harshness off.
      It has the absolute best grip outsole I have ever experienced on a road shoe.
      The upper is just excellent. Chef’s kiss.
      Perhaps a good metaphor is a bespoke old-school Boston with better materials and construction than Adidas would ever put into a trainer.
      Despite all of those posh materials the weight is totally reasonable. Not light but reasonable at 320g for 13US. (Compare with 360g for Boston 11.)

      No, not at all. The TS9 uses a very narrow last so the forefoot is extremely narrow as is the heel. The A8 uses a raise last, similar to the AP3, so the forefoot is much more generous and the toe box has more volume.

There are so many better daily trainers with better foam than the Peg. I guess my preference is the lower stacked super shoes. Probably looking forward to the NB Pacer 2 the most. Eventually I'll make that video...but need to get some more time under the channel first.
      If you are someone who gets niggles from shoes, I'd not recommend the Adios 8...or any Adidas Adizero shoe frankly. They tend to be firmer and harsher rides for most. Maybe look at Saucony or New Balance, which generally have more forgiving rides.
      As for the Adios 9... big changes are coming. We saw it briefly in the TRE coverage, before it was taken down due to embargo. The Adios 8 doesn't have rods in it, just the torsion shank...but that is gone in the Adios 9 completely... the shoe will be pure Lightstrike pro... which is what I've wanted for some time...pure LSP with no stiffening agents. It is still a lower stack, like the Adios 8, and will have an upper with the same design language of the Evo 1... it looks fantastic.
