This is Fellini’s masterpiece. Visually stunning...who needs a plot.

Fellini's darkest movie. Possibly my favourite. But then, how can tell for sure? I love them all (less the very last movies)

Donald Sutherland is utterly exquisite in this film. But then, when _isn't_ he? Incredible acting; one of Fellini's finest.

Nino Rota's music really elevates the mood of this movie, even more than his other Fellini scores. It really conjures the eerie feeling of the floating city of Venice, long before it became an overpriced museum crowded with tourists.

I agree... Fellini's darkest, most haunting and melancholic film.
The direction, images and music are stunning. My only criticisms are that the costumes/makeup are over the top and some of the sex is silly. Less would have been more. Still, Sutherland gives a heroic performance and the work remains an alchemical masterpiece.

Definitely one of my favorite costume drama depicting a highly fictionalize version of Giacomo Casanova‘s life, my only criticism would be I would prefer the love scene with Henriette be long and “detailed”.

    Felllini is truly a clairvoyant!
In 1976 he predicted the scenes of a very possible dinner after a woke fahion show today : full of arrogant creatives and slothful false geniuses.

I love this movie. A feast for the eyes and ears. I would like to know the name of the actress who plays the young granddaughter Edwige. Her refutation of Saint Augustine's theory that Christ was conceived through the Virgin Mary's ears is a hoot!

His last, majestic effort. I can see why he dedicated himself to divertissements, since Casanova. As far as I know he was very disappointed in the general reception of the film - which he believed to be his best work by then, or at least among the very best. I guess that marked the beginning of his artistic autumn - not like his last movies are bad. You still gotta love Fellini.

I think when Augistin spoke of mary conceiving through the ears he did not quite mean literally. I think he meant that Mary conceived by faith by LISTENING to the word of god through her ears and Being she was free of sin was more receptive to taking those words to hart and aligned perfectly with gods will.
