David, I would love to see an episode specifically showcasing all the folders (all types) and fixed you have, which would be best suited for very cold weather use. I’m talking northern Canada cold. Ice fishing. Frozen lakes survival. Bushcraft. 3rd party sheath upgrades for cold weather? Thanks for everything that you do David. One of my favourite channels on the tubes
I live in Florida. I have lived in the Pacific Northwest & I cannot imagine how exposed steel (or any metal) touching the hand is ever a good idea. Thus I have no metal handled folders or fully exposed tang fixed blade knives. They are are I have found, poorly suited for cold weather or chopping anything. This may be a good starting point. Anything popular in Scandinavia, Finland Northeastern Europe is quite likely to handle Canadian winters
Spider man is also Peter Parker. Peter parker is a freelance photographer. So he is going yo have to rely upon himself. This also solves the question of where he would carry the knife. In his camera bag would be a multi tool to maintain his camera gear. Which is also where he would keep it while in costume.
I still have my Gerber Parabellum folder from way back, which has a sheath allowing for carrying open or closed. It has a "Bolt Action" safety on the left side. One evening I was practicing snap cuts (translation: "fooling around with the knife"), not realizing that my thumb was resting on the bolt safety. My hand stopped, the handle stopped, but the blade swung around and bit into my index finger. Fortunately, no tendons were cut, and the doctor at the ER who put in the stitches complimented me on bringing him the neatest, cleanest cut he'd ever seen.
DCA and Thomas you guys as always sharp well just wanted to let y’all know I now know what RWL34 stands for and it’s due to one of the questions asked on damasteel so once again thanks
Most serious question: What’s your - not dream knife - but fever dream knife? The one that can never exist, because only you would buy it? (And what’s the closest real life version?) For me, a balisong butter knife for tactical toast. (Squiddy plastic balisong trainer)
Where did tip down carry pocket knifes go? You'd think, at this point, any folder should have the option of swapping the side and orientation of its pocket clip.
You always show a gentleman's carry knife. I have the Kiser Begleiter mini with 20CV and titanium scales, blackwash and frag scales. It's gorgeous, looks classy, high-end materials, won't break the bank, and one of the best actions of all of my knives.
Could you do an episode on Rescue Knives, please. Like the Spyderco Salt series. Blunt tip. And also look at various lanyard options to secure a knife to oneself. Thanks very much! Chris
Can you do a little segment on long-handled short-bladed fixed knives? I've got big hands (larger than probably DCA- 2XL for most gloves) and getting a four finger grip on most knives with a shorter than 3" blade length has been nearly impossible. I have a Cold Steel Bird and Trout but it doesn't ~fill~ my hand. No preference on blade material, price under $150. You guys are why I love knives. Thanks for all of your videos that bring a little joy each week to all of us.
G'day DCA & Thomas. It's great that the knife community still remembers Bob Loveless. Great tribute on a great show. So where have Seth gone to now.? Cheers from Australia.
Peter Parker AKA Spiderman is young and skinny, but he's also built. Maybe a neck knife that would be concealed between his pecks. Something flat and skinny like the Tops Sneaky Pete fixed neck knife.
Learning so much from your Q&A. Thanks! My question: what are metal bolsters on folding knives for? On kitchen knives they affect the balance and protect the leading edge of the handle. Is it the same for folding knives? If so - why are there folding knives with "bolsters" made of carbon fiber or G10 in contrasting colors?
The bulkiest parts of Spider-Man's costume are the web shooters, a small fixed blade would fit in wrist part of the modern ones. The old bracelet style would allow for a folder in one of the segments.
A shroud line cutting knife. The rubber hooked blade one they used in millitary flight gear. Then, he could zap it with a little web and be good to go! 🤔
Hi DCA and Thomas, i've initiated a friend of mine to small game hunting. We are having a blast! But when comes the processing part, his knife is and old paring knife that is close from the end of it's career. I'm thinking about buying him a knife eventually. I'm looking for suggestions that wont break the bank ideally 50-100$. My ideal would be something close to the casstrom mini safari, i've got one myself and really love it! So if possible a hollow grind in 14C28N, but i do understand that i'm streching my luck here. I really like your work, thanks in advance!
In the old comics, Spider-Man often toted a 35mm camera around with him to snap pictures of himself to sell to the Bugle. I think he would need a multi-tool to adjust both his camera and his webshooters. My vote goes to the Victorinox Deluxe Tinker in a nylon sheath, attached to his camera's neck strap.
I am a landscaper, I work with the same chemicals. I've been using a Civivi for two years, and it's fine besides the constantly loosening pocket clip. 0 corrosion. I just rinse it off....that's really all you need to do
Another good knife for our stainless with washers buddy would be the Sig Saur Exclusive K320 with Magnacut. It might not have the internal as stainless as the Salt but maybe DCA can investigate that for us.
Hey DCA, I work in the ocean cutting things that need to be cut, and in my spare time I use my knife to dig at the salt mounds in the Dead Sea. I need the MOST corrosion resistant knife that you have. Budget unlimited.
Hey, DCA! I love the KniFAQ vids. I’ve never seen this particular question/issue addressed, though. My stepdaughter is a wedding planner and frequently finds herself in need of a knife/cutting instrument when orchestrating her events. At those events, she is dressed in formal attire. She has small hands and the nature of her job requires manicured nails. What knife would you recommend? I thought about getting her the CRKT Stylus, but I’m concerned that the liner lock might pose some difficulties (perceived or actual) given the importance of maintaining her polished nails. Do you have any suggestions?
Are the salt series pinned or screwed? Reason I ask is the gentleman specifically asked about washers... and I suspect that means he wants something that is easy to take apart.
To answer the Spider-Man question, the Boker Magnum Lil' Friend. If he modified one of his web shooters, he could easily slip it in there with no imprint.
Depending on your definition of "knife", the Miles Morales Spiderman has a bio-electric power that usually takes the form of blasts he calls "Venom Blasts". He has learned to control this power to create constructs, including a lightsaber-like sword that has been dubbed the Venom Saber.
Hey DCA, I’ve noticed that all of the “folding food prep” style of knives tend to go with the highest level of corrosion resistance or at least place it at the top of the priority list, however, many chefs prefer a carbon steel blade and prioritize high HRC or ease of sharpening. So why do we only see the edc food prep knives with exotic/premium super stainless blade steels?
For traditional pattern-welded "Damascus" steel, there has been some research showing that it has a minor advantage in cutting performance if it's used for the edge-forming part of the knife. The hypothesis is that the borders between the different steels enhance the "micro-serration" effect present in steels because the carbide formation is "uneven" at the edge, forming more microscopic serrations. (Forgive me, I couldn't find the study I saw with a quick search, but I promise it's real!) That said, while the difference is measurable and statistically significant, in practice, it's probably not noticeable. The edge profile, knife profile behind the edge, and sharpening technique and quality dwarf any "Damascus" advantage over the individual steels it's made from.
Also never said what damasteel actually consists of or how it is made, what makes it different that other conventional damascus steels. The core (lighter colored after etching) is RWL34. This is composited with the reinforcing material (darker colored after etching) PMC27. Both steels are stainless and particle metal. These are sprayed together in layers then rolled out to produce the pattern, as opposed to being layered as solids and welded via forging in conventional damascus steels. The materials are important, but the process is the real differentiator.
What your best recommendations for 154CM, crossbar locking, wharncliffe/sheepsfoot blades, for less than $100? I have a kansept mainstreet (liner lock version) and I love it, but it's a crazy large knife for me.
Good afternoon DCA and Thomas. I've been enjoying carrying friction folders lately, but since they aren't a popular as other knife styles they tend to not get featured very often online. Do you have any "hidden gems" or preferences in this style of knife?
@@EtotheFnD you can’t make a damascus out of steels that have different heat treat protocols. you have to make it out of steels you can heat treat with similar enough processes to do it all at once.
Hey big guy! Long time listener first time caller…that combo sheath for the Rao is really interesting. Are there any companies making something similar? I think it would be a great fit for the artisan cutlery proponent I have. Similar concept knife that’s a little bulky to carry with the pocket clip. It would be great to have for camping. Thanks and big love from Canada.
How about the Victorinox Climber for Spiderman ? He does a fair bit of climbing, doesn't he ? Yes ? No ? Lame ? Yeah, that's what I thought aswell. 😂😆😄🤗☺️❤️🙏🖖✌️🕊️
Spiderman would acquire terminator-like power to morph his hand into a knife. By the by, is that Mr. Gray Bull's hand holding the knives close-ups? They look like a young person's hands. Quite a metamorphosis if they are his.
Hey knife center, I usually carry a couple knifes everyday. Usually over a 3 inch blade and under a 3 inch blade. What are some not so well known 5th pocket carries that you can recommend and introduce me to?
Thinking about it spidey would use a fixed blade. Sheephoofd because his knife would be for rescuing people and cutting spider webs. he wouldn't carry anything defense for combat perpose. So something fixed blade for strength, because his webs are tough and at least partially serrated. weight isn't a problem he could carry it on any place he wanted the real constraint would be conceeling it under his street wear because he tends to wear his costume under them but i guess if he is taking the time to set up cameras he can grab it from his bag.
My Rex 121 Sage was a long time wait. However, for Spyderco, it was not very sharp. It was “toothy” and barely cut paper. Should I get a professional to try and give it a super slicer edge or is it just the nature of Rex 121. It’s disappointing for the longest edge retention steel made today. Any advice is appreciated.
Now for the Least important question of the day. Why would anyone prefer a tip down pocket clip? I have many knives that are both and since I always use my pocket, tip down means extra steps to deploy the knife.
I don’t have any tip down myself, but wouldn’t it be safer? You prevent the knife to open in your pocket… but I supose that is a problem only if you are running or doing some hard physical activities…
Spidey DOES have a utility belt worn beneath his spandex. Isn’t there a knife legal in NYC that is thin enough to be slipped within a pocket of that belt along with his web fluid refills?
For Spider-Man I think it would have to be a neck knife. Something like the Spyderco Ark, Coldsteel Hideout? Or Boker lil’ friend for your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.
What well known steel does damasteel have the most similar performance to, in terms of toughness, edge retention, and corrosion resistance? Did I understand you correctly that it performs similarly to 154CM? Conversely, don't most other damascus steels perform similarly to VG10...or rather, include VG10 along with a couple of other steels?
CPM-154, which is not the same as 154CM. And yes, many, though not all, current non-powder metallurgy Damascus blades are made with VG10, at least on production folders. When it comes to custom knives, the makers are usually either making it themselves (out of carbon steels) or using something made by a supplier like Chad Nichols, who makes carbon and stainless (usually made with AEB-L) varieties -DCA
1st question was great. Did a good job explaining but could have been easier explained. If you keep answering that question you'll eventually get it. Honestly, great answer😂
Question: do I need a gentleman’s knife? I own a mora companion that does most of what I need to do, pretty well, for a beater knife. I have a bestech swordfish in d2 that is my edc. I have an artisan cutlery hornet for self defense. And that’s my normal rotation, although I do have more that I rotate in occasionally. However, I do not have any knife that would be considered “gentlemanly” and I ponder what utility can a gentleman’s knife provide; besides cutting s steak?
Hey DBA and Thomas. There is always the argument, why not just bring an Axe. Also, lest we forget, America was built with the Axe . So, if you were frontier-ing, what axe would you bring? Would be fun to see a video dedicated to some of the great axes you carry.
154cm/RWL34 was favored by loveless and other custom knife makers for the combination of its performance along with being much easier to hand finish than many other steels. I won a box of Damasteel billets at Blade Show Texas, really looking forward to digging into them. I've almost mustered up the courage to start grinding them...its expensive stuff
I am truly interested in knowing more about the Damascus stuff. You mention Damasteel, but there are so many more like Damacore and the like... Could we get your take on ALL the Damascus steel trademarks ? What are they (list) and what do each of them consist of ? Which one would be "the best" or the most premium variant ? ps. you can obviously skip all the non-trademark Damascus steels (which seem to be nothing noteworthy except a marketing stunt to captivate the non-initiated). Also, two names seem to come back time and again: Chad Nichols & Devin Thomas. What sets them apart ? If not too much asked, there seem to be so many patterns of "Damascus", from rain drop to dragon skin and what not. Is it possible to have a complete list of different "damascus" patterns ? And see what they look like ? Thank you for sharing your knowledge, experience & wisdom so all of us can get the most comprehensive insight and know ALL there is to know about the topic of Damascus steel. Godspeed ! :)
You have a fixie in your sink ... Wash them and make a vid of the knife; wash 20 times and you have at least 15 videos ... 5 where junk . Then you have 1 fixie and 15 junk videos ... 1/15 is good enough for you or maybe 15/1 🤔
Hey dca? Why is it that you can find a lot of great knives in s35vn steel for a good price.( $50 to$150) but knives In s30v are few and far between. I'm understanding they are similar steels? I love my s35vn it's in my top 3 steels and want to try s30v but don't wanna spend alot. Please help?
Very serious question for you DCA, if Dr. Who decided to trade in his sonic screwdriver for a pocket knife, which knife would it be? Remember, he spend a lot of time in England so it would need to meet their laws.
All the OG gangsters I know would sometimes carry a razorblade in their mouth, bit between the molars on one side. If you see an og talking like 50 Cent out of one side of his mouth- that's why So Spidey would probably do that
Years back during my research on Damascus steel. I read on the internet ,,,, so it must be true,,, that Nobody actually knows how the old Damascus ...original... steel was made. Your thoughts?
There's a fascinating documentary about Damascus steel and its secret, here on youtube. It's conveniently called "The Secrets of Wootz Damascus Steel" (channel is called Loades of History). It's about a blacksmith who worked for decades to recreate it. His name is Alfred Pendray. And it seems he's the guy who actually cracked the Damascus steel recipe. I can't recommend you enough to watch it.
Okay hear me out … when a video is way into the weeds, have the weeds up at the opening but have DCA rise up from behind the counter. Even better, make it into a new video series, David’s Weeds?
Hi DCA, Thomas, Seth and the Comment Section. My friend has a Buck 110 and he loves it. It is going to be his birthday soon. I want to buy him a Kwik Thumb stud that allows him to one hand open that knife. (He already cut his thumb trying without them). I would like to get something for myself as well. Could someone recommend me a budget knife that I can both front flip and reverse flick (ideally via fuller). Budget is under $100, I have eyes on the Sencut Bronte, but I want to know if there are more options. I know there is the CJRB Ekko but that is not for me. Thanks a lot.
Extrema Ratio are tacticool, but all models... all! has the same BORING steel for a ridiculous expensive price. Thats why you dont found reviews on youtube.
Dca you are wrong! The performance of a damascus or damasteel comes from its lowest steel used which is pmc 27 in ds93x! So it will cut a little longer than 12c27, not cpm 154!
I’m taking it that you aren’t interested in Damascus or Damasteel or comics characters? I knew the first question would be rather lengthy to answer but I did find it interesting. You could easily fast forward past it.
Tha RAO is hideous, one of the ugliest knives I've ever seen. I'd never buy one and if it was gifted to me, I'd give it away to someone I'm not fond of. 😐
Those weeds keep getting higher and higher, and I am here for it.
In the old days, Spiderman used to wear a belt. So I think that any 3 inch knife ( Spyderco also) would do well...
15:20 he already breaking the law as a vigilante. I'm sure his knife showing is the least of his worries 😆
I also wok in landscaping, the Caribbean sheepsfoot was a great recommendation.

@8:30 I can say that anything in the Salt series is what you want. Serrations are great if you want. The Salt in any price is a banger.
I’ve been looking at the Spyderco Salt series for my Sea Rescue callouts. Search and Recue style knife with a blunt tip.

Godspeed ! :)
david. i need more fixed blade videos. please.
You have a fixie in your sink ... Wash them and make a vid of the knife; wash 20 times and you have at least 15 videos ... 5 where junk . Then you have 1 fixie and 15 junk videos ... 1/15 is good enough for you or maybe 15/1 🤔
Spidy is already a vigilante how much do you think he would worry about knife laws if he chose to carry a knife
Spider-Man boots no socks I bet those thangs stank boy. How about a neck knife? Maybe a secret edge by cold steel?
Googling “does spyderman wear boots?”
Spyderman? You are clearly also more a knife-nerd than superhero-nerd 🕸
Spider-Man could get away with one of those dorky belt buckle knives that you have to open your belt to get to.
Spider-Man would carry a boot knife for sure. Peter Parker would carry a Spiderco.
knives MUST be concealed in NY? that is almost opposite to shotgun law in TX
There is no shotgun law in Texas. You can carry one concealed or openly.
Very serious question for you DCA, if Dr. Who decided to trade in his sonic screwdriver for a pocket knife, which knife would it be? Remember, he spend a lot of time in England so it would need to meet their laws.
MSQ: Oh Romeo oh Romeo, what thou knife did Romeo carry in the Shakespeare classic?
Stiletto maybe?
All the OG gangsters I know would sometimes carry a razorblade in their mouth, bit between the molars on one side. If you see an og talking like 50 Cent out of one side of his mouth- that's why
So Spidey would probably do that
🤘🤠
I’m a Superman fan, so I think Spider-Man should stick with his webs.
he would make one from the web
He wouldn't carry a knife. Remember the scene when he said his biggest weakness was small knives. It's not comic accurate, but my best guess.
Spiderman would carry a spyderco, come on people
Just about any knife could fit in Spiderman’s prison wallet, or would that be plastic man’s?
Potential Lightning Round question: Do you know who makes Nitro-V steel? Or is it a generic steel that lots of companies produce?
Another Buck 110 ...🤔 ... Or an utility knife ... a nice one!
Spyderman could tuck any knife in his taint.
🔪👍
A penguin is the answer
Spyderco bug
TBH you talked mainly about damasteel and almost nothing about damascus
I suggest a CRKT MINIMALIST. A NECK KNIFE SHOULD NOT PRINT SINCE HE HAS DECENT SIZE PECKS.
Damascus isn’t damasteel. Combining two worfe that are separate don’t improve or make things more interesting.
Neck knife for spiderman
I miss Seth
Did we lose him?
@@JosephOlson-ui2pg seemingly
He hasn't gone anywhere.
Real knife like Bark River don't need advertisment?!
😂 spiderman can carry that wallet knife in his prison wallet 😂
Extrema Ratio are tacticool, but all models... all! has the same BORING steel for a ridiculous expensive price. Thats why you dont found reviews on youtube.
Dca you are wrong! The performance of a damascus or damasteel comes from its lowest steel used which is pmc 27 in ds93x! So it will cut a little longer than 12c27, not cpm 154!
Worst one ever! Did you even consider how bad this episode was before you wasted out time?
I’m taking it that you aren’t interested in Damascus or Damasteel or comics characters? I knew the first question would be rather lengthy to answer but I did find it interesting. You could easily fast forward past it.
$320 for a Chinese made knife... The world has gone mad. "Made in China by Reate Knives"
Production cost on that knife was probably $20 each.
And then the very next Chinese made knife, $525.......... Insane.
🤣🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂😂
Tha RAO is hideous, one of the ugliest knives I've ever seen. I'd never buy one and if it was gifted to me, I'd give it away to someone I'm not fond of. 😐
still 10 time better than any spyderco, especially the one he show today 🤮🤮🤮
It is very expensive and N690 steel?
