When we run short of home potatoes we go to our local farm shop to but a 25 kg bag to which I save some of the smaller ones as they are a lot fresher than supermarkets and do the same as you I have been doing this for years now most the potatoes grow but but of course just like the farmers not all of them grow, you have helped a lot of people with your videos so keep up the good work, I’ve had to give my allotment because of heart and back problems so I grow potatoes and onions in the garden as half an hour at a time a few times a day is all I can do.
Really great video this! I actually bought a single potato from Tesco's and managed to chit it this year. I cut in half and grew them in two old paint buckets with some super phosphate and slow feed pellets and got a decent yield out of it. I harvested them all and they are in a cardboard box right now. I am now thinking I wont eat them and instead make them into seeds for next years grow with your tips! Thanks a lot!
Well thank you Jim for that information,I’ve always heard that you shouldn’t use your own potatoes because of disease, that’s what they say on garden programs. But I think you right,as long as they don’t have any diseases then it should be fine and like you say cheaper 😊.
That's certainly correct. Disease can spread to next year's plants that's why it's important to make sure they're disease free before you save them for seed 😊
I too choose large, egg size potatoes for seed, though I've used smaller with little or no discernible fall in yield. I store mine in the same compost & container they grew in, only fairly dry. 10cm layer of compost in the bottom, then a layer of seed potatoes, spaced 3-4cm apart, then another 5cm of compost, followed by another layer of seed potatoes. Repeat until container is full, then I put them under the floor in the front room, where it stays at 10-14°C all year round.
Such great advice Jim ~ I put my winter potatoes in a small no dig bed mid September and the shoots are up about 3 inches ( 7cm ). Do I top up with soil? And when should I stop? I’m hoping to get some for Christmas dinner 🍽️
Glad I helped! My concern with storing them in foil rather than paper would be that foil may cause the potatoes to 'sweat' and isn't as breathable of a material as newspaper. Newspaper allows the potato to 'breathe'

You can only do so much. It's great that you're still doing some gardening though, fair play to you!
Thank you for watching, and happy gardening!
Great tips and tricks Jim. I hope the weather is kind to you as I’m sure you are going to be busy again all weekend, Ali 🌞☔️🇨🇦
Cheers Ali 😊
I had no idea that you needed to wrap them. Thanks, great video.
It helps keep them from shriveling up / drying out
Thank you. Great video. Happy gardening 🙂

Very useful and informative video. Thanks for sharing. Just a quick question can they be stored in foil over winter instead of newspaper 🤔🤔
