Sow And Plant These In November For An Abundance Of Veggies Next Year!
What can you sow and plant in your garden in November?
November isn't a month that we think about sowing seeds and planting in the garden or allotment. And whilst there isn't as much to plant this month as there is in the summer, there's still quite a bit you can plant!
Today we'll go over what those veggies and flowers are, so you can get them planted in your garden to grow over winter and give you an abundance of harvests and flowers in spring!
We are busy preparing the garden for winter, but why not get some seeds sown too?
Many of these things will be difficult to plant if the ground is frozen in your area. I live in the UK, in plant hardiness zone 8b. In November, we get frost, but fo...

Do THESE Jobs In November To Prepare Your Garden For Winter!
Просмотров 3 тыс.12 часов назад
November is full of jobs that can be done to prepare the vegetable garden for the winter ahead. Whether you have a garden, big or small, or an allotment, there are lots of things to be done this month to prepare for the cold season, which will also make things easier for next spring too. There are also some vegetables/fruits we can plant for winter, too. Such as garlic, onions, and brassicas su...
I Built 8 Raised Beds At The Allotment To Increase My Crops For Next Year | Gardening For Beginners

This week at the allotment I've been getting the raised garden beds built! As part of my plan to convert my allotment completely no-dig. The in ground beds are very heavy clay and growing any vegetable crops in them is difficult. Cabbages, broccoli, cauliflower, onions, leeks, potatoes, pumpkins, garlic, courgettes, and much more have been attempted to be grown in these beds, to little or no su...
I Tried Growing Sweet Potatoes In The UK And This Is What Happened...

I tried growing sweet potatoes at my allotment garden, in the UK. Yep, that's right. Probably one of the most tropical vegetables out there which you wouldn't associate with growing in the not so tropical UK. I like to give stuff a go, however. And this year I was determined to grow some sweet potatoes, no matter how big or small I manage to grow them! We started these sweet potatoes all the wa...

Britain is well known for it's grey skies, and rain... Lots and lots of rain. That's what it's been like this week, and the allotment has been swamped out! Time to get the wellies on. As always we are still gardening no matter what the weather throws at us. Winter is a time that I like to get some of those DIY jobs done. More on that in the video. Today's video is a bit of a ramble as I walk ro...
I'm Planning The BIGGEST Allotment Project Yet!
Просмотров 3 тыс.21 день назад
Winter is just around the corner and now is the perfect time to get started on those garden DIY projects. Not much is growing and those high maintenance jobs which we had a lot of during the growing season are put on pause, giving us much more time to crack on with putting things in place for next year. I've done a lot of DIY projects at the allotment over the past few years. But this arguably ...

It's time to pack the allotment garden up for the winter. In October i'm clearing the no-dig beds of finished crops, and harvesting the last of the vegetables. I'm also planting our garlic to overwinter.. I'll show you how I plant my garlic. And I'm transplanting the Cabbages, Purple Sprouting Broccoli, Cauliflower, and Kale into the polytunnel! We sowed these brassicas in July to overwinter an...
Save Your Own Seed Potatoes And NEVER Buy Them Again!

Growing your own potatoes in your garden is a big step on the way to becoming more self sufficient. But why not become even more self sufficient by saving your own seed potatoes from your harvest so you can plant them again next year. You may be wondering where to even start and may think producing your own seed potatoes is something only professional growers can do. This is far from the truth,...
Epic Allotment Fails Of 2024 | Gardening For Beginners

The 2024 growing season at the allotment garden has had its ups and downs. It's certainly been a challenging year with it's problems. In fact, it's probably been the worst growing season yet despite a glut of vegetable harvests last minute right at the end of summer. At least we've managed to harvest plenty of organic homegrown produce in spite of all the issues we've had. Anyway, today's video...
Sweetcorn DISASTER & Laying Membrane On The New Allotment | Ep.3

The difficult allotment growing season continues, and another problem has presented itself. It really does seem to be one thing after another this year! Vegetable gardening always has it's challenges. This time it's our homegrown sweetcorn. The rats have eaten most of our cobs! Despite having covered them with socks, which worked in previous years. Pest control tips are welcomed! This week I'm ...

It's time to harvest our container grown potatoes at the allotment garden! We've been patiently waiting since April to harvest our Java, Setanta, Cara, and blue (yes blue!) potatoes, named 'Blue Annelise'. These potatoes are main crop varieties, and they are all blight resistant except for the Blue Annelise. That hasn't stopped the blight from wiping them out this summer, though! More on that i...

We've made good progress on the new allotment garden over the last few weeks! We've cleared all the weeds, and most of the rubbish. I've even cut down two trees to allow more sunlight onto the plot. All the weeds and trees have been burned. Now we just need to get the ground as level as possible and put down the weed suppressant membrane. We will then build our no-dig raised beds on top of that...

Can i ask where the potato buckets come from please. I would love to purchase some for next year.
Over the past few weeks I've put garlic and onion sets in, and transplanted a rhubarb crown and some lettuces that a plot neighbour gave me. I also sowed some Meteor peas into root trainers in the polytunnel last week, but no signs of germination yet. I've only been gardening for a couple of years and this is the first time I've tried growing anything over winter, so it'll be a bonus for me if I get anything! 🤞
Hi. Just wanted to ask what size container do you use to store your seeds packets in. Thanks Christina
Have experimented with growing some brassicas in 7cm pots, planted some in the garden in autumn, had the rest in the tunnelhouse garden in Zone9A New Zealand, planted 7cm pots last week of July which is equivalent of January in the UK. Today harvested first cabbage from the July plantings, pulled the earlier planted ones they were tiny and feed to the chooks. Thanks to RUclipsrs like yourself, you have encouraged me to expand my knowledge.
November is the month of never any rest time 😂😂. Awesome update Jim I’m not growing and sowing a lot. But it’s good to see what others are doing. Have a spectacular week, Ali 💨☔️🇨🇦
Hey Jim, Such a help to get your guidance on jobs for November. Many thanks
Great video Jim and lot of useful information on what to grow in November, happy gardening. Sam
I use overwintering sets to get an early onion harvest, because I practice relay planting with them in my trailing squash beds, planting at the far ends and getting them out before the trailing vines reach them.
hi Jim, I would be really interested seeing a video on microgreens. Thanks for this video.😊
Excellent video. Only started growing this year and am taking the big step of signing for an allotment plot tomorrow.
I'd love a microgreen video, please Jim. It's something I'm definitely interested in 😊
I'm trying onions from seed now November I grew from boxing day and January February and they all were golf ball size so thinking if I grow them now they have more time to grow
8b here on the Washington coast. Similar climates….
Hi we're did you get your seeds boxes from. Thanks marie
your growing a tuber thats from like africa, its not gonna grow here. get a UK variety
is there a video showing your pallet build in your greenhouse at 1:08 in this video please. Subscibed. IAN
Thanks Ian 😊 the pallet bench in my greenhouse was built back in 2021 before i started RUclips. I've thought about making a video about how i built it, but i haven't the need for another one just yet. I just got around 8 euro pallets and screwed them together. A pallet for the end sides, a couple for the back, some for a shelf beneath and a couple for the top. I used some extra pallet planks for extra legs at the front. If you'd like to email me at James.evans.gardening97@gmail.com, I'll send over some closer images so you can perhaps see how I've assembled it if you'd like
Thr frames pretty good.. 🤔
They aren't too bad but my birch tree polytunnel which I've had nearly 5 years has thicker frame
Where did you get the boxes you keep your seeds in
On Amazon. They're great! Search for photo organizer boxes. They're about £20-30 each but so worth it
Poles look thinner
They are rather thin on this newer version. And the frame is very easily bent. On the older out sunny poly (other video you watched) the frame is a bit stronger I've found
@downtoearthwithjim The drop in quality is disappointing I was tempted by them in the Range.. I'm very interested In the birchtree one you've recommended and there seems to be two pole size options online and the galvanisation is great.
@@Odo-so8pj yes the birch tree one i would say for a budget polytunnel is very good. Even the cover is good quality and 5 years later is holding up, minus a few holes and the vents failing. I'll likely replace the cover next year
Yikes snow ❄️ is nice to look at and hopefully kills off some nasty stuff in the soils. But I’m more than happy for it to not be here too long too often. Great lists Jim, I too prefer fall cleaning g its means we can hit the ground running in spring. Have a super weekend, Ali ☔️☔️☔️🇨🇦
Cheers Ali ☺️ we don't actually get snow very often here. Maybe once or twice a season, some winters never at all! I think our mild winters are contributing to the increase in pest and disease in some ways. Slugs and rats in particular are worse. We do need a good freeze up. Our last proper cold winter in the UK was 2010! Have a great week!
Excellent video with lots of good advice. Thank you.
Glad you found it useful! ☺️
This is great! I always get a rush of motivation after autumn harvests cause we’re constantly going over to the allotment and grabbing stuff for soups and cakes and even additions to dog food. I’m happy I’ve got something to do with said motivation, especially because it’s all gone when we get to spring-time rush because I’ve waited all winter and all I want to do is sow not spring clean. Getting all the cleaning and prep done now while it’s the only thing will be great and alleviate the rush next year. I’ve already set aside the beans will be keeping and I’ll keep the seeds from the biggest pumpkin when I get to making something with it. I don’t think we kept any of the courgette seeds sadly but we always get a great harvest from them (might argue to have 1 more of em next year cause I love the soup and we can always preserve it if it’s too much. Anyways I’ll stop rambling now but safe to say I’m excited for next year, my Halloween was already spent getting rid of the old withered tomato plants, just gonna keep doing that
This is great stuff! Thanks for sharing! I agree, getting those tedious time consuming jobs out the way now is better than doing it in spring when it's all systems go! Happy gardening to you! I hope next year is a good growing season for you, keep us updated in the comments 😊
I have a really tiny garden but do have a greenhouse. I’m new to greenhouse gardening but am starting off some seedlings ready for next year. I’ve planted some Sweet pea, cornflower and alyssum. I planted up pots with bulb and daffodils and this morning I weeded and cut back/ removed the annuals. Anyone have advice on what .i should be doing in the greenhouse?
Looking good Jim, can’t wait to see what you end up with next year! Please share the leek and potatoe pie recipe, sounds lush! x
Hi James, I live in South West Hertfordshire and I grew one in a 30 litre container three years ago and that produced a reasonable crop so the next year I propagated a number of plants and planted them in the ground in late May. They all grew well and produced a good crop by late October BUT, there was a lot of slug damage quite a lot of small tubers and a few enormous ones and the tubers did not store at well in spite of me following all the correct advice. I will go back to getting mine from the supermarket!
really enjoy you vids----mr-fothergills is doing 1 pound seed sale at the moment. I'm putting my Polly tunnel up on the weekend.
My mum was just talking to me about jobs to do
There's so much to be honest 😂 a lot of people think gardening is for the summer months. So far from the truth. I garden January to December 😂
Useful video. How do you feel about just adding the leaf material into the wood chips for the paths?
Any advice on the best way to clean inside a polytunnel? Getting a few mould spots 😢
Maybe where the cage is you could try two hot beds (look up Jack First he has a book on hot beds) that way it gives you an earlier growing season to start growing food. It also extends your growing season in winter and helps through the hungry gap and at the end of the year lots of compost so you would be able to be even more self sufficient in compost 😊
I've got a multi coloured box like yours that I've labelled by month to sow, but that organisation went to pot as I was planting things when I fancied this year. I gotta work a better system
I’m busier at the moment than I was in summer! Doing pretty much all the things you said plus updating my planner on what grew and what didn’t, what I liked and what I didn’t. I don’t know how people who shut up shop for the winter have time to get all their jobs done in spring.
Store my seed in a old cake tin, with dividers labeled now, soon, later, need one more next season. Also record all seed types and expired dates.
I LOVE this video stud. Your VERY VERY attractive. Wish there was one for 2024. Anyhow, I enjoy your Channel and your videos. Eric Memphis TN subscriber

Hi Kim, cheers! As a fellow creator in the same niche with a similar sized channel, I'm always open to a chat! I'm happy to share tips and advice 😊 Instagram or email? 📨
Great work Jim. We make our raised beds the same way. We buy our wood form a wood supply company- far cheaper than SIY stores. Our beds cost £28.00 to make a 2,4 x 1.2 x .3 bed. We have woodchip paths which every 2 years we re do using the old chip for the compost. It's a shame you didn't save the branches, twigs laves etc from the trees you cut down as they are great for filling rised beds (Hugel Kultur). I did that with a lot of my beds and crops and flowers have thrived in it. You are doing a magnificent job. You should have great success with your crops next year. Happy growing 🙂
Thank you! That's good that you can make them so cheap. I'd like to make these with thicker wood but that would be pricy. I'm hoping next year is better with these raised beds. Happy gardening 😊
@@downtoearthwithjim I am sure you will be rewarded for ll your hard work and determination. Keep on going- you'll get there. Happy growing 🙂
I wrapped weed membrane around stiff cardboard ; and secured to ground using using tent pegs to create paths.
That ought to hold it in place!
Moving the large strawberry cage to the new plot is a good idea as it will free up ground so that you can position the raised beds with a larger path between each one. Perhaps to get a wheelbarrow between or at least to be able to kneel when tending the beds. If the paths are too narrow tending the beds can be more difficult
Exactly my thoughts 😊 thank you!
Such a great job Jim - well done! I agree with the others who recommend woodchip over membrane. Easy to scoop it up & use for compost when you need to refresh it 👍
Thank you! And Absolutely! I'll be going with wood chip again after considering all those things!
Why do you need to put anything on top of the membrane for the paths.
The membrane will get wet and slippery and the wood chips are better to walk on, look better, and absorb rainwater making the paths drier
Mine has not got slippy. Got nothing on top of membrane.
I'd go for woodchips Jim. They will break down and help break up the clay and you can use the woodchuck as mulch after a couple of years. A bit of extra work topping the paths up, but very worthwhile in thr end.
Thanks! My old wood chip paths are helping fill these raised beds up
Don't go for gravel!! After 32 years my paths were orginally gravel, but the birds scratched soil into the paths now all wood chip, every 3 years it is placed on the beds and fresh wood chip put down.
Thanks for the tip! I've decided to just go with woodchip as I have done for the past 5 years 😊
You won't regret going a bit higher, my beds are 6m x 1.4m by 150mm, would love them to be higher and should have used 50mm instead of 30mm thick, the asparagus bed is edged with 75mm wide boards by 250 mm high, but they were reused from another job.
I've definitely thought about making them higher. Trouble is the cost. Thicker boards add a lot of cost and 12 inches tall is just right for me. My existing raised beds are no taller than that and I've found them to be ok
Never mind your screw gun get yourself a new saw 😂
I could do with a better one. Does the job okay though. Not that I use it all too often anyway
Wow Jim you have definitely made a huge difference to the new plot. Hopefully you and mom can grow some fantastic veg come spring 👍. I am not sure a lot of people could have done so much in a short time. Have a super week and take a break 😂 if you know ow how, Ali ☔️🥶🇨🇦
Cheers Ali! I'm always trying to keep busy. I don't think I can stop 😂 have a fab week!
Nice work.
Thank you!
Well done, Jim. Your new beds look anazing! You've worked so hard. Keep up the good work 😊
Thank you so much 😊 now to fill them!
I chuck the weeds and soil in the chicken run let the girls scratch through it brilliant compost in 3 days anyway im trying to interview my favorite channels on live would you be up for this as always happy gardening Richardx
Hi Richard. When are you thinking? I'm sure that's something we could arrange 😊
@downtoearthwithjim sent email
That’s a lot of raised beds you’ve made, fair play, they should perform well for you, the only concern I would have is that the long sides may bow out, as there is no posts going into the ground, maybe it would be worth banging a post in the ground at the midway point and securing to that just for insurance? Just a thought.
That's a very good point, Pete. I was thinking about adding a batten down the middle going from one side to the other to keep the sides from bowing out. I did that with the bed in the poly and worked ok. Although your suggestion with posts might be easier. Cheers for that! 😊
hi Jim, I would line your paths with membrane first then top with wood chips. If your wellies have any mud on the bottoms, the gravel will stick to them and you'll get sick of cleaning the stones out of the grooves. Great work getting all those raised beds made.
A very good point there. Woodchip it is!
