Saltatio Mortis (latin for dance of the dead) is a german folk metal band. They founded in 2000 and started by playing music on medieval markets and as street musicians. (btw the Pack that survived the first battle and going to adventure are the band members. The Captain is the Singer Alea, the guy who was killed by the arrow is Luzy one of the bagpipe players) Beside playing on big festivals and concert halls now, they still can be found on medieval markets playing for free. They still have strong ties with the whole medieval and Larp (Live Action Role Play) szene in Germany. Thats why they are able to produce such an amazing video. Most of the actors are volunteers and friends bringing their own equipment. The video and the song (and the whole rest of the new album) are about and new campaigne for the german Pen and Paper Roleplay system called Das schwarze Auge (The black eye) for their 40th anniversary.
@@HinterdemAugeDSA thanks, didn't knew that. I was a DnD player all my life and back in my days, you either played DnD or DSA, never both. The two groups hated each other. :D
I'll give you a quick rundown of the band members if no one's done it already. Alea der Bescheidene: vocalist, he's the blond one with the mohawk Luzi das L: bagpiper, Schalmei player and director of the music videos. He's the one with the arrow in the neck. Bruder Frank: bassist. He dies at the tree. Falk Irmenfried von Hasen-Mümmelstein: hurdy gurdy and bagpipe player. He's the grey haired guy with the beard, and also wrote a few storylines for the PPRPG this album is concepted around. In this video, he's the "last man standing" and tosses the torch in the tower. Jean Méchant the Tambour: drums, guitars, piano, backing vocals. He's the black-haired guy who yells at Alea when they're in the tower. Also does the band's podcast. El Silbador: bagpipes, Schalmei pipes, Uillean pipes. He's the bald one. He's building the band's pipe instruments. Till Promill: guitarist, bouzouki player. He's the curly-haired one who dies in the forest. Edit: the guy who gives Alea the map is Bernhard Hennen, who is the author of the RPG "The Dark Eye" which this album revolves around. Great reaction and greetings from Germany!
Man! Blind Guradian were one of the Bands to create the genre of "Powermetal"! The are around since the 80s, and I love them since we heard their MCs on a Walkman in School Bus! Most of the early works are related to JRR Tolkien and other Fantasy thems, they are LEGEND! Please check out " The Bards Song", its a classic! Cheers Mate and greetings from Germany!
Blind Guardian and Helloween besides a few more bands invented European power metal. You heard their lead singer Hansi Kursch in the first Ayreon video 'The day the world breaks down'. I highy recommend Ayreon River of Time Live Universe (YT channel Kekkosen....) Hansi and Marko singing. Usually reactors watch Blind Guardian live Wacken 'Bard's song/ Valhalla' a great example for crowd interaction
A bit of background: It's the first single from Saltatio Mortis' upcoming concept album Finsterwacht, an hommage to German tabletop RPG Das Schwarze Auge (DSA)/The Dark Eye (TDE). The box contains the CD, a novel, a tabletop adventure book (choose your own adventure style) and dice. Saltatio Mortis is a German medieval rock band, but they also mix in different music styles. Blind Guardian also is a famous German rock band. Finsterwacht are a line of towers/beacons in the mountains of Finsterkamm, as last line of defense between the lands of humans and orcs at Heldentrutz, a part of Weiden in the Middenrealm at the continent of Aventuria. Their function is to warn the people as seen in the video.
You should have a look at The Dragon Borns Comes (not hte live unplug version!) with Lara Loft, My Mother Told Me and Pray To The Hunter from Saltatio Mortis too. All this songs based on fantasy games like this video. This video based on a paper role play which is very famous in Germany called Das Schwarze Auge (The Black Eye). On of the authors of this game works for the story of this video too.

Yep, these were Orcs. The pen and paper RPG this is based on was more or less written as a German alternative to D&D in 1984, with the Orcs clearly being more Tolkien-inspired. The setting is somewhat medieval, but apparently Fantasy. Saltatio Mortis have done several gaming related songs, eg "The Dragonborn comes", for Skyrim, and in all of them, the visuals are amazing. ("Pray to the hunter" for Elder scrolls online would be another fabulous example.) I think they have just fun doing that stuff, and I cannot hold it against them.
@@NateRockneVery welcome. I really liked about your reaction that the video spoke to you as much as the music. Not just because it was cinematic, but because of the story it tells.

Lyrics of “Finsterwacht” = “Darkwatch”
[intro]
Darkness weighs heavily on the land
The looming peaks of the mountains rise ominously into the sky
After all these years it's back, that eerie whisper in the night
What is hidden there in the dark forests?
A storm is coming, it is getting cold on the Dark Ridge
But there is hope
For in the midst of all this gloom, the Guardians of the Watch stand high up on the towers
Day after day, night after night
Ready to defend our families and our country with their lives
When they light their fires, the Goddess has mercy on us
It is the fires of fear that burn there
May the heroism of the Guard shine brighter than the light of the flames
Because they are our last bastion from what lurks for us in the shadows
And our hope there on the Finsterwacht
[Verse 1: Alea]
The flames burn high up
The sky is black and distant
A memorial in the darkness
Every fire is a star
Say goodbye friends
Sing one last song
Sign after sign together into the night
On the Darkwatch
[Verse 2: Hansi Kürsch]
Silent heroes without rest
The looks sharp as steel
United, inspired by the courage to die
Let's stand here one last time
Be vigilant friends
The shadows have awakened
Sign after sign together into the night
[Chorus: Alea & Hansi Kürsch]
And the world is on fire
I want to go through the fire with you
Until our ashes unite for eternity
And the world is on fire
Then we'll see each other again
Beyond here, beyond time
[Instrumental Break]
[Chorus: Alea & Hansi Kürsch]
And the world is on fire
I want to go through the fire with you
Until our ashes unite
For eternity
And the world is on fire
Then we'll see each other again
Beyond here, beyond time
For eternity
[Bridge: Choir, Hansi Kürsch & Alea]
Fires flare up
We are the light in the night
Rondra, hear our choir
Come stand with us, for we are the guard
Friends, be careful (fires blazing)
On the Darkwatch
Be the shield wall at the end of the world (We are the light in the night)
Hold the tower (Rondra, hear our choir)
Also in Orkensturm
Stand together for we are the watch (Come stand with us for we are the watch)
Friends, be careful (fires blazing)
On the Darkwatch
Be the shield wall at the end of the world (We are the light in the night)
Hold the tower (Rondra, hear our choir)
Also in Orkensturm
Stand together for we are the watch (Come stand with us for we are the watch)
[Chorus: Alea & Hansi Kürsch, only Hansi Kürsch]
And the world is on fire
I want to go through the fire with you
Until our ashes unite
Forever (Forever)
And the world is on fire
Then we'll see each other again
Beyond here, beyond time
For eternity
thank you.
Blind guardian is a german metal band. Maybe you should react to "The bardssong" and "Walhalla" at Wacken .
Both Valhalla the bard song are among the song you need to watch/react with Blind Guardian.
Thank you for the suggestions. I'll check it out.
