For my computer health (and for keeping my mind clear), i've made it a habit of turning my PC off. I didn't use to do it, but having web browsers (like firefox) that save my tabs when I restart my PC has allowed me to do this without losing what i'm focusing on.
(if it wasn't for that i'd probably leave my PC)

As someone who repairs computers for a living, I always shut mine down at the end of the night. They are kinda like people, they need rest to be fully functional, through probably to a lesser degree. If the vomputer is constantly doing something, yeah I would leave it on all the time too.
As for my wallpapers, I change them ALL the time. Especially my phone. I get bored of one thing and need to change it up for variety. Also I have a (bad) habit of contantly checking the time on my phones so I see my lock screen a lot throught the day

Changing wallpapers is one of my great joys in life, it's part of your personality and you're subtly influenced by it all the time, come to expect a certain image when you turn on your phone. And when I've gone through a rough patch or something, it's nice to change it and it feels like starting part of my life fresh.

I'm with Dan on this one, the electricity bill alone would do it for me (is it cheaper in the US than here in Germany or something that that isn't a concern?), but otherwise I feel turning the PC off at the end of the day is a way to shut down for the day yourself.

    • @andrewhayden9896
      @andrewhayden9896 Месяц назад +1

It probably depends on where you live in the US. I live in the southern US and I am on my PC roughly ~10-12 Hours a day because I use it for leisure and work, and I'd say its effect on my electric bill is negligible at best. Maybe a few extra bucks a month. My AC unit (no central heat or air in my house and it gets very hot in the summer so those things run wide open) and my refrigerator are the main culprits for a higher electric bill.

    • @baka_yu9343
      @baka_yu9343 Месяц назад +1

@@andrewhayden9896 I wouldn't have to worry about the electricity of heating or AC (we typically have radiators and no AC), but still, every appliance does make a difference, so it's rather common here to turn everything off during the time you're not actively on it (if it doesn't need to run permanentely like a fridge, naturally).

With how PC's and laptops are nowadays, a computer can fully boot up and be functional in a minute or less. Probably a lot less. I remember our old family computer with Windows XP would take about 10 minutes minimum to boot up before you were able to do anything on it. I'd guess turning a PC off at the end of the day, or even during the day if you don't have plans to be on it, would help in lowering the cost with monthly electric bills and lengthen the life of the PC.

From what I remember it's good for computers to be shut off sometimes instead of going nonstop. Not sure how true that is for Apple stuff, but I do know for Windows that one of the reasons keep getting updates forced on them is because they never restart it and let Windows take care of it at that time. I always shut mine off and I've never had Windows force me to update. Also, when it's not doing anything, it's just a waste of electricity, heat and noise if it's going.

I often tell my cat "good kitty, it's okay" in a bright voice whenever she's clearly having a nightmare. Helps calm her down without waking her, not sure if that'd help in Kep's case tho. Sometimes I look up the YT channel for "relaxing music for cats" because she does often find it deeply relaxing and seems less likely to have nightmares while it is playing.
I have a laptop I shut down/restart every couple of weeks if it is acting strange; ie when the graphic drivers aren't working with F.lux or the finger scanner isn't working consistently. Not sure why it's like that, but as long as it is that easy a fix I just keep doing that. My parent's desktop needs to be shut down every night because the fan is too loud, but hoping we can get a new one for them soon since it is 10 years old and a newer computer would be miles faster and quieter.
I always grab pictures from night skies or stars or galaxies for my wallpaper, just to be able to say "ah yes, I am home" whenever I get a new computer. I get too attached to devices so it's a good way to trick my brain to get used to the new device.

I change my desktop wallpaper based on what I feel like fanboying about at this moment in time. Currently, it's "Doctor Who"-related. I also tend to leave my computer on unless I'm going to be out of the house for a prolonged period of time. The last time I had to turn off my computer for awhile was when I moved in with my older brother and his family last November. I (obviously) had to have it off so it could be moved to his house safely. And I have my own little room now with an _awesome_ computer desk, and I'm pleased about that. It's probably a better desk than the one I had at my old house, but I digress.

I'm the opposite I think it's wild people DON'T turn off their computers haha. My co-workers (we're UX Designers for context) complain about bad computer performance but they never shut down their laptops and have a million tabs/apps open and I'm like gee I wonder why. If that actually has an effect, I'm not sure, but in your case Stephen it makes sense you always have your computer on given your work.
Also their excuse is they don't want to have to reopen everything and I'm like Mac's literally have the checkbox when you go to shut down that says "Reopen windows when logging back in" so that makes no sense to me, but to each their own!

My lockscreen wallpaper on my phone changes weekly to whatever it is, but my homescreen is straight black. Since the screen is "off" when the pixel is black so it's primarily a power saving thing despite my phone can easily last an 8 hour work day, let alone a day on my free time.
As for PC, it stays on 24/7 normally except I don't have a PC since 2021 so that doesn't apply. My laptop is just simply on sleep mode when not in use so technically that stays on as well.

I shut my computer down every time I walk away from it for an extended period of time (30+ minutes), only exception is when it needs updates or security scans. Whenever I leave it on for an extended period (weeks+) it starts to have issues, it also is a good habit to make sure I'm saving what I'm doing, use less energy, and dont wind up with 300+ tabs open that I never use. Wallpaper I dont change often, on my phone its been the the same for my past 8 years or so, and my PC I changed somewhat recently to look less strange across 3 monitors but need to improve it, its fun and enriching to customize and personalize my devices.

I turn my computer off nightly, mostly. I only have a laptop. My wallpaper, I'm in a similar boat, actually- I always have something up on the screen, I never really _see_ my wallpaper, so I've had it set to the same pic for a long time- one time, I made myself a burger, but since we didn't have any burger buns, I took a hot dog bun, spread a bit of peanut butter in it, cut up the burger into pieces, and loaded it into there. had a handful of chips on the side, drank some chocolate milk with that. It was good! But yeah- I took a pic of it before I started eating, and that pic's been my wallpaper since God knows when.

As for turning off the computer, I know its bad for it to stay on all the time and thus I do turn it off every week or 2, but a lot of the time I don't want to have to wait for like 20 minutes for it to fully boot up and get up to full speed in order to watch say a RUclips video while I eat breakfast so I just leave it on and put it into sleep mode before I go to bed.

This is an interesting topic for sure. As far as wallpapers and backgrounds go, my phone background usually just stays the same, but I use my laptop much more than my phone, so sometimes, I'll change the background for both the desktop and the lock screen for the heck of it to change things up. And about computers and such, I usually try to turn my laptop off at some point each day; sometimes at night, but most of the time, I just turn it off before work and I turn it back on when I'm home.

Besides my computer being in my room and turning it off for noise and lighting purposes (RGB), it gives me piece of mind and closure to the day when it is off. Conversely, if it's the end of the day and the computer isn't turned on, it likely means I had a productive day away from the screen, which is great for the mental! Pretty addicted to that computer hahaha
But my main concern is for system health and longevity, and it's what I was taught to do in school. (Had a computer class in kindergarten in '05). So unless I have an overnight process, it's off.

I also have the photo gallery thing on Windows 11, I'm guessing it's the default option. Like you, I never see my desktop wallpaper anyway 'cause I always have other stuff open. And I'm also one of those who never turns off their computer unless I have to restart it because of updates or an issue. Which is very rare. I keep the dang thing on* for 50+ days straight until Windows gets fed up with me and force-restarts the laptop. (* = "on" meaning I don't use the "shut down" or "restart" options. I only put my laptop into sleep/power saving mode.)

My computer is almost always on, and I frequently have the whole screenspace covered in windows... but I still set custom wallpaper backgrounds. I have like a whole folder of wallpapers that there's so many in there, I had to categorize them into extra folders within. I even _make_ some of my wallpapers; the most recent one I made is for my phone, where the lockscreen is inspired by the Sheikah Slate, and the wallpaper is a screencap of a corner of a Sourcemap I made set in Aperture Science. So I have a little slice of Aperture whenever I'm on my homescreen. Changing my desktop wallpaper at any time feels like I'm transitioning through a chapter in my life...
Anyways, point is, I like having that bit of personality set, even if you can't see it most of the time. Feels right.

I like my backgrounds to look pretty, but I don't care about changing them up once I find one I like. I used to never shut down my computer, but now I do it at least on a weekly basis - I cleanup my laptop and phone on Fridays, and part of that is shutting everything down and letting them rest for at least an hour.

I think most modern devices are okay to be left on sleep mode. The only time you would really need to shut down or restart is if you’re having issues. Although shutting down a computer at night before you go to sleep isn’t that weird, especially if you don’t have it doing stuff overnight a lot of time. But if you know you’re gonna be using it the next day right away, I think sleep mode is okay too. It also probably kind of depends on the device. For example, my 3DS doesn’t really need to stay in sleep mode because that just wastes battery because there isn’t really any functions it can do in sleep mode anymore. I’d only leave it in sleep mode if I planned on going somewhere to get street passes lol

I don't restart my computer overly frequently (currently at 8 days of uptime as of typing this) but at bare minimum I put my computer to sleep if I'm not using it for more than a few minutes, and if I need to update Windows or notice performance is a little iffy, then I'll restart. In general, I would say restarting your computer at least once a week or so would be helpful in maintaining performance while also not needing to make it a daily routine, though computers these days boot up generally fast, and if you're still running off a hard drive, please do yourself a favor and grab an SSD. Even a modest SATA SSD is much better than any hard drive.

I don't turn off my laptop either unless I have to update or I feel like a refresh is needed. Nor do I change my wallpaper as much. The only time I would is if there is something I absolutely need to have as my desktop cause of how pretty or cool it is. Good vibes to Keppy.

Both my laptop and my phone have rotating wallpapers. I probably haven't updated the set of images in years. I also just shut my laptop (put it to sleep) every night. The idea of turning a laptop completely off every day just does not compute in my brain.

I never turn my computer off unless I have to, which is usually once a month on the second Tuesday of every month, which is when major software providers push updates.
As for wallpapers, as a non-frequent writer, I have characters I create and I commission art of them and I usually make the newest art my phone wallpaper, while my primary character has a character sheet I use as my desktop wallpaper that displays on my four monitors.

Ever since iPhone introduced rotating lockscreens, I've had between 10 and 18 different backgrounds that rotate throughout the day. I don't have to choose just one image.
As for my Mac, I do choose my background because I close the lid every time I'm done using it, and I see the lockscreen whenever I open it up. So I want it to be something I like to look at.

I also hardly ever turn my computer off! I just restart it for updates if it needs to be updated, but otherwise just keep it on. For wallpapers, I just use the default dark Windows 11 wallpaper. I used to use custom wallpapers, but I find the Windows 11 default ones good enough to just not use anything else. I do switch it up on my phone more often, though, but you also see the wallpaper of your phone every day.

With wallpapers for a while I was a set it and forget it with phones and kinda into it with computers. It’s since kinda reversed where I don’t bother with it on computers (maybe that’ll change someday who knows) but since Apple added the photo shuffle for iPhone lock screens and backgrounds I’ve started caring a lot more about adding to it. As for powering off my computer, it’s something I do every once in a while when I think about it, usually if there’s an update I’ll just let it do the update and then power off to give the computer a break.

I just put my computer to sleep because it's easier to get to what I need to do. As for wallpapers, I had to change to the Vegas night lights because I had Westminster Abbey up for literal years, until I had to do a clean re-install a month an a half ago.

On both my phone and PC, I have a galaxy background (fittingly, I have a Galaxy phone). My phone's keyboard has a galaxy background, and my phone case is purple and blue, because galaxy. (I also replaced my broken new 3DS XL with the the galaxy themed one) 🌌
I used to leave my PC on, but ever since I got a newer, faster computer, I shut it down because it boots up so quick anyway.

I used to regularly shut down my computer, and someone commented how weird that concept was. Now I have migrated to just leave it on sleep when I'm done. And yeah, I can understand not caring about your wallpaper, especially in this era where we maximize the size of our windows to take up the full screen. That said, I DID find a higher resolution version of the iconic Windows XP wallpaper to use as my wallpaper.

I turn off my my PC every time I leave home or go to bed to help cut down on electricity cost and reduce heat output in my room. I also believe it helps reduce wear on the components so they can last longer.
As for desktop background. I don't change it very often, about once every few years, and it's usually an official high quality screenshot of a game I find pretty. Start screen and desktop are different, but both have been in use for like 5+ years at this point.

Turning off your pc is better for the overall health of the computer itself. I try to make it a habit to turn mine off because of this. But there’s plenty of times where I’m working on something over multiple days, so I won’t turn it off.

I don’t turn my Mac off. The most I do is throw it into sleep mode and unplug my USB hub. As for wallpapers, I change them constantly. on my phone less often, but macOS does that color thing with the dock and the menu bar and I at least like that to change regularly with stuff I’m into at the moment (like right now, it’s Pokémon themed).
