  • macmost.com/e-... You can't lock individual cells in Numbers, but you can lock entire tables. By designing your spreadsheet well, or making alterations to an existing spreadsheet, you can only have exactly the cells you want as editable.

    A necessary video! Thanks. After 20+ years with a pc, I knew excel pretty well. Seems this is much harder, but maybe I just need to get used to it. As far as my Mac goes, wish I had switched 30 years ago. A much better machine.

    Excellent video Gary, but it seems that it would be times for Numbers to implement a way to lock individual cell.

    Thanks for that. The workaround begs the question “Why didn’t Apple build a routine to automate these table creations?”. There is still the need to lock the position of the input tables without locking out the data input.

    Another excellent video Gary - thanks! One quick question. Is it possible to hide (turn off) the display of row numbers and column letters when entering data in cells so that the user doesn't even know the he is actually in a different table?

    • @macmost
      @macmost  4 года назад

      No, you can't really do that.

  • @jeffharmed1616
    @jeffharmed1616 3 года назад

    I’ve just found a quicker way. Rather than dragging your input cells to a new table, drag the calculated cells to a new table and then delete the calculated cells in the first table. It saves several steps.

    Thank you, can I send email a numbers spreadsheet so it cannot be edited. I want to send it to my accountant so he can see it but not edited it?

    Nice Video One question after doing everything if we select export and create an excel file this lock option is not working. Does anyone let me know what can be done in this case?

  • @ransombaggins9301

    Wow! Didn't need any of this but always enjoy your videos. That said, does anyone know if it's possible to combine two tables? Like, take table 1 and table two, bump them up against each other as you like, and then make them one table?
    I ask because I need a very long list of numbers. Numbers can do that for me when you type in a short sequence and then click and drag the yellow dot. However, I need those numbers to be in a column with merged cells, and I can't get the yellow dot trick to work with merged cells cells. Make sense? So, I made a second table, resized the cells to match what would have been merged on the other table, and want to bump them together. I'm guessing I'll just have to set them next to each other and hope my OCD doesn't put me in a padded room. 😉

    Using iPhone. Im able to move the new tables but they do not automatically line up like yours do here 4:08. Any tips?

    • @macmost
      @macmost  3 года назад +1

      Just zoom in and get it to line up as best you can. It is going to be difficult on a small iPhone screen with multitouch.

    Where can I find the Dollar formula to lock a specific number like this D$4? Thanks

    • @macmost
      @macmost  2 года назад

      You can just type the $ if you like. Type it just like you did there. But you can also click on the reference in the formula and you'll see checkboxes for Preserve Row and Preserve Column.

      Not sure what you are asking. Are you using Excel or Numbers? Or did you import an Excel document into Numbers?

    How can I have a logo appear on each document that is on the same table?

      Not sure what you mean. You can place a logo as a graphic wherever you want it.

    This is excellent, but what if I want to export the spreadsheet as an Excel sheet for those poor souls still using Excel? I'm guessing it won't mimic Excel's cell locking capability?

    • @macmost
      @macmost  2 года назад

      Not sure. Try it and see.

    • @peterlong1243
      @peterlong1243 2 года назад

      @@macmost I did try it, doesn't really export very well! I guess I'll have to stick to Excel if sharing a spreadsheet with locked cells with Excel users. It's a shame because I was just getting to like how Numbers works...
