  • This video is about the correlation between tongue tie and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders. This video may be useful to dentists, patients who are suffering from TMJ problems, and people who are simply looking for more information. As a dentist with a practice limited to taking care of patients with TMJ disorders - i.e. jaw pain, popping or clicking noises in the jaw joint, headaches, neck pain, locked jaw, and more - the connection between tongue tie and TMJ problems is incredibly clear to me. I hope you find this video both useful and helpful! Please feel free to comment with questions and I'm happy to answer them!

    This video made me cry. I experienced every single thing you discussed except for the sleep apnea (as far as I know!). I always feel like I’m crazy or doing it to myself. You helped me understand that I didn’t bring this upon myself and it’s not my fault. Thank you so much for this information. Now I feel like there must be something I can do to at least work on the tongue posture. Is there anything that can be done about narrow palate on a full grown adult? TMJD caused me to have to give up singing, which was my life’s one true passion, and it causes me so much suffering both physical and psychological. Thank you for taking this condition seriously and with curiosity. I am so happy to have found your channel. Bless you I wish all the best in the world for you.

    • @theTMJdoc
      @theTMJdoc  3 года назад

      I wish there was an easy way to fix this through stretches or Mewing. The way we treat TMJD is with orthotics, myofascial release, and osteopathic jaw manipulation & even then, it can take 4-6 months with weekly or bi-weekly appointments for symptoms to resolve.

    • @theTMJdoc

      Open bites typically develop with tongue thrust OR due to joint deterioration.

    • @quancho3484
      @quancho3484 2 года назад

      @@theTMJdoc do u think an airway issue could cause the tongue to position itself forward, creating the open bite. I have been trying to find out why i developed an open bite in adulthood but no one was able to say why (i had a "normal" bite before and was able to touch front teeth), ive met many dentist and orthodontist. They recommended jaw surgery to correct the open bite however i was hesitant due to no explanation on why it developed in the first place. i feel as if tongue thrust is not really as much an issue as resting tongue posture. my theory was airway related and that the tongue constantly rested forward. or its as u said, joint deterioration (which is what i'm scared about). i wanted to get imaging from an oral surgeon but its been difficult due to insurance issues.

      Hi Akhil and thank you for your comment. It’s never too late! You can pursue treatment but it should be done in a specific order:
      1. Establish good nasal breathing - see an ENT for this. It may require surgical correction.
      2. Myofunctional therapy before tongue release
      3. Tongue release
      4. Myofunctional therapy after tongue release

      Sorry you’re going through this! We would treat this by first treating and eliminating your pain with an orthotic. Once the pain is gone, we would recommend tongue tie release and sleep test to see if the orthotic is enough to get you adequate oxygen. If it’s not we would then make an appliance that treats the TMJD and the oxygen saturation. Where do you live? Where is your pain?
