Thank you for checking out our latest video! We set out to make a quick how-to video and somehow this turned into a much longer creation! Please skip ahead as needed!
Follow along as Curtis replaces a handle on a Gransfors Bruk Splitting Maul, and learn lots of tip and tricks along the way. Curtis also chats about our store, does a quick Gransfors unboxing, and you may see the famous Izzy (our store mascot) and a quick guest appearance from Rowdy (a part time pooch).
Please note that we are doing this video to show how YOU are able to change your own axe handles. Handle replacement is not something we do as a typical serivce. We have a full selection of Gransfors Bruk Handles and Axes.

Occasionally a new handle will hang up on the metal guard where it goes into the head. Sometimes you can use your mallet and an old screwdriver to get the catching part to clear. Or it may require the use of a file or sander to taper the leading edge of the guard. You can easily see the spot that needs attention. It may take multiple tries to get this done. It sucks, but it does happen. Just be patient and do the work. If uncertain you can call the store for guidance. 402-502-4852

I put TiteBond exterior adhesive on the wedge before I drive it in. That way it won’t loosen over time.

I have hung handles in axes where the grain was not perfectly aligned with the handle. I am more worried whether the handle fits the eye properly. I watch my grandfather hang a new handle on an axe head with his pocket knife and used a fence staple for a wedge, because that is what he had.

I need a new handle for the gransfor splitting axe with metal collar. Can you help me out? I live in Pittsburgh pa
I bought one of these mauls 2 1/2 years ago. Used it 3-4 times just to split small amounts for campfires. It hasn’t been abused and it’s been kept in my garage that’s pretty consistent temp year round and not overly humid. Just noticed my head and metal sleeve are now loose on the handle.. is my only option to buy a new handle and re do it completely? Seems like it should have lasted longer than this.
How much $ dollers is it to buy that maul size with handle?

Honestly, if i don't intend on saving the handle i'll just drill out as much wood as possible to make the handle come out easier.

No 441 replacement handles
Disagree regarding sharpening a splitting axe to a razor edge. A sharp axe is more likely to cross grain and get jammed. I’ve been splitting for 20 years and tried it all, splitting axes definitely shouldn’t be razor
