Dave always does this, talks for 15 minutes, asks for Bryan's thoughts then proceeds to interrupt him every 5 seconds to get his point across.
Seriously though. It's even more frustrating when he can't complete a full sentence or thought. I really dont think he'd be clowned so hard if he had good enough grammar to explain his thoughts or opinions.

As a lifelong fan who was 20 in 2013, I'm with Bryan here. 2019 was abysmal.
It's not really a "with Brian" thing, it's just objectively true. The biggest flaw with AEW is the wonky booking. The second biggest issue is that Triple H took over creative at WWE (i.e. Vince being ousted), which made the product way more competitive & attractive to fans/wrestlers.
2019 is absolutely the worst year in WWE history. Not 1993. Not 1995. Not 2009. Not 2015. Its 2019.

That's standard behavior for Meltzer. Dave doesn't want to accept anything that contradicts what he believes. If someone says something he doesn't want to hear, then he'll dismiss it, with it being common for him to start talking over the other person so they can't even finish. (Mind, even if you say something Dave supports, he might still start talking over you because he'd rather say it himself.)
To be fair, Bryan does it with Mike and Vinnie a lot. Hell, there was a time where Mike was really done with Bryan just dismissing everything and more or less "overruling" him. Sometimes they bite back, I mean, sometimes Cornette will be stood up by Last... sometimes... but these podcast/RUclips folks are smart enough to keep mostly docile sidekicks.
Bryan will one day inherit the "Meltzer WO Empire" and knows Dave only has so many more years in him and acts the part.
Whether you like AEW or not you can’t deny they injected new life into wrestling back in 2018/2019 when wrestling felt like it was a dying art and its lowest. AEW helped make WWE step up their game.

AEW has actually allowed Dave to have a relationship with them and they were the alternative to WWE that was so heavily criticized at that time, AEW was the fresh alternative for "him". His bias has been bad.
@@MadVybez They average less than 2,000 because the capacity for Korakuen Hall (Tokyo's main venue for smaller shows) is less than 2,000. They draw 3-10k for most big shows and 20-40k for the annual Tokyo Dome show. They also drew 6k in Chicago recently.

in someways its a good thing with Dave that he'll downplay how he felt about a product at the time and emphasize more how the business was. It's a weird discussion though because Bryan was not disputing that buisness was okay only the product was terrible in his opinion. And Dave does a quick buisness history of WWE (and yes what Vince did from 2001-2020 to make the buisness more stable and more baseline profitable is probably a better period as a buisness man).
bro cody WAS AEW. him, the bucks, omega. A unit. Cody took a sledgehammer to the throne, AEW was built on this spirit imo. Once Cody up and left for WWE that bubble done burst hard and was a major blow to the companys perception. Punk was there at least, who more than filled the Cody void (imo). Without Punk or Cody tho that void is just massive like the grand canyon, AEW is getting hit hard. it's probably only going to get worse because theres zero sign whatsoever that TK understands the concept of what pro wrestling even is.

The number of people watching RAW at the height of Austin's popularity is not likely to be matched by the WWE. The saturation of wrestling along with the numbers guys like Hogan bring in are factors people like you tend to ignore.
Why is Dave defending 2019 WWE booking? It was definitely a valley-- not the worst, no, but people were thirsty for an alternative to Vince's same ol, same ol, without a doubt

@@VirgilZandig 2013 had the advantages of Bryan, Shield, Wyatt Family. They did actively try to sabotage Bryan's push, but there was too much exciting stuff around then.
2013 was head and shoulders above 2019, although I do think the depth of 2019 is overblown.

Never forget: Years ago Meltzer claimed that if a U.S. based company had an in ring style similar to Japanese wrestling, that it would take over the U.S. and become the top promotion........ thats why dave has been clutching his pearls when it comes to defending AEW.
The thing is that with the likes of Orange Cassidy, AEW is far away from the New Japan heights of the 90s. I would love a US promotion run like 90s NJPW but to me, AEW is the opposite in most ways. A lot of bad Indy workers doing flips and landing on their heads.
1) He didn't claim that 2) AEW isn't close to Japanese style 3) WWE isn't #1 because people prefer their style but because of brand recognition and marketing.

Dave dismissed WCW's success, "They ended up failing anyway and that hurt the business". So, WCW reaching historic levels of success and sparking the Monday Night Wars doesn't matter because they eventually failed?

TNA had double the ratings are had and tried to go on Mondays, they tried, Tiny is petrified.
It was a very short ride but I'd say it was less WCW and more the nWo and Goldberg that reached these heights of popularity. But then the line between the nWo and WCW at the time was growing thinner by the week.
The WWF at least embarked on a massive rebranding effort spurred by the unexpected (well Dave predicted it back in the day, but Dave is always wrong apparently, so huh... I dunno...) rise of Stone Cold's "mature" (as in 90's edgy) character and storylines. They were being carried by DX, Austin and freshly heel turned Rock, but the company as a whole was being remodeled to match these new superstars without just making everyone a lackey of said stars.

Every time Dave has to argue about something happening in AEW, his first defense is always "BUT WWE.....". then if that doesnt work, he does his patented "I covered wrestling in the 70s and 80s and blah blah blah" and Bryan just gets annoyed and moves on to the next topic.

Vince left, WWE improved, people switched back. And that’s completely fine. AEW will always be around as long as Tony pumps money into it so you can enjoy what you enjoy.

10 years ago, I was a huge PWG fan. WWE was going down a rough path. Punk was gone. Danielson won the title at Mania30 and quickly was out with injury. Rollins, Ambrose and Reigns were elevated and we were fed the awful corporate storyline.
But PWG had the best wrestling in the country. Excalibur was a fresh voice to Michael Coles Vince McMahon delivery. The wrestling was fun, athletic, violent and the shows were just a good time.
5 years ago, PWG was nearing its end but AEW was born. WWE in 2019 was death. I stopped watching almost all together aside from the big shows. AEW was fresh and fun.
Present day, AEW is showing maybe what worked on the indies should have stayed on the indies. Excalibur is atrocious with his stagy over delivery. The wrestlers feel like indie level wrestlers. The booking is shits.
It’s a shame they steered off course and I don’t know how they straighten it out as long as Tony still has the book, the Bucks still have major influence, the announcing is the same, etc etc
It's quite interesting that you as a long-time PWG fan can recognize that Excalibur is a horrible commentator and that the PWG stuff does not translate beyond a vocal minority. I guess it's true that you haven't really grown if you're the same person you were 10 years ago.

In terms of match quality yes but they had way more stars and future stars in the business back then than AEW has. Bret, Shawn, Razor, Diesel, Undertaker some of the biggest and best of all time. Also Yokozuna whos a top 3 monster heel of all time. Also way less botches back then because people werent doing all these crazy moves and no terrible women's matches either. Mid 90s WWE > AEW. AEW wins if you care about rope work and wrestling holds.

This argument between them is interesting because, because i was listening to WOR at my most in the 2016 or so to 2020 or so period, and Bryan is consistent with what he said.

Regarding the AEW hate...
I've brought this up before but no one in the IWC acknowledges it as valid. If you ONLY watch WWE and you are a fan of people like Moxley, Miro, Edge, Sasha banks...then why are YOU supposed to be cheering for AEW to be successful? The show you watch is worse because of competition. WWE doesn't have Okada and Ospreay on its roster right now because of the fact that AEW exists.
I get that this is ultimately a selfish outlook because more competition is a good thing and its better pay for performers, etc. These factors don't actually matter to every viewer and they certainly don't matter more than the product they enjoy.
If Drew didn't sign with WWE and instead for whatever reason went to AEW...do you think 100% of exclusive WWE fans would say how great that is for the industry and not be remotely selfishly annoyed that we aren't getting Drew vs Punk among other things? Be completely honest with yourself here.
Another thing to point out here even though it seemingly contradicts things is that X isn't real life. We all know this. When you say hate against the product hurts it I'd seriously question just how true that claim really is. WWE is in a boom period and there's tons of negativity about that company. There's people who are sick of Jey Uso, who think Cody has run his course, who burned out of the bloodline stuff 2 years ago, who are disgusted by the Saudi relationship, who hate the companies reception to the Vince stuff, etc, etc, etc.
I'd be curious to know how many people actually gave AEW a chance but ultimately abandoned it primarily due to the hate online convincing them that the product wasn't good. Because in my history of viewing online discourse...you don't actually convince people of things. You don't leave a youtube comment on a right wing political channel and suddenly get a reply saying "You've convinced me, I'm now part of the progressive left, thank you". People just have defending their position sometimes in a positive way but mostly in a trolling way.
The AEW fanbase at its core was likely very much an NXT Black and Gold fanbase - excited about performers who weren't wrestling to make Cena/Miz look good and very much aware of every big name outside the WWE and TNA universes. Fans who like comedy, one liners and "characters", but also pro wrestling. And memes, of course. But they enjoyed people doing "gymnastic routines" (in my days it was called lucharesu) or having "British strong style" matches.
Such fans are VERY much "perpetually online" fans. These are fans who didn't see Cody Rhodes as the former Stardust or Dashing Cody Rhodes but as American Nightmare Cody Rhodes. They followed his Ten Pounds of Gold saga with Aldis, his stuff in the NJPW and the initial All In. They are people who "read the dirtsheets" and watch the pundits on RUclips.
But is that hardcore "indy" (Should we consider NJPW "indy" when they run Tokyo Dome every year? Are CMLL/AAA indies just because they're in Mexico and Cornette hates lucha?) fanbase the only group that followed AEW from the get go?
Probably not given that Jericho and Mox were there and big enough names to bring in a part of the WWE audience over with them. And Punk brought new fans as well. Big names attract people - ask Bischoff what Hogan did for WCW when he jumped ship or McMahon when post-Rocky III Hogan left Gagne for him.
That grumbling WWE fanbase brought over by the promises of Jericho and Moxley only to then return to the WWE product because it's trending now is quite probable (Much like WCW's nWo as The Outsiders+Hogan fans eventually went back to supporting McMahon). But is that "perpetually online" audience unhappy with AEW? That's a good question. And how big IS that audience anyway?

People fail to realise the state of 2018-2019 WWE, people were praying for a competition, they were so sick of Vince that they were giving AEW and tony a pass for the booking shortcomings early on, maybe making too much excuses. That may have had lured Tony into a false sense of security and validation about his booking . But now that Vince is gone and that WWE is slowly getting better and better with the PPV and stories (3 hours raw is still boring af outside of the main event), and that the novelty feeling of AEW has faded away, its really getting exposed. Personnally i blame the backstage politics, lack of leadership and constant hotshotting and burning through gimmicks when its uncalled for, and also an over reliance on indie wrestlers which makes the AEW product looks more second rate compared to the WWE guys who are better trained overall.
Kurt Angle didn't work hard in TNA according to Meltzer........let alone Christian, Bully, RVD, Hardys, Lashley, Drew, R-Truth etc

Forgets the entire history of TNA. Even when TNA was good, it was always a story of TNALOL. Strange.
What he really meant was that he wasn’t prepared for so many fans to reject his idea of what wrestling needed to become. He can’t accept that his takes are a minority opinion, even now.

Dave didn't admit it. He said *NJPW* believed Jericho and Omega were very important (to NJPW), and that NJPW (wrongly) believed both would stay with them. NJPW believed the Bucks and Cody would leave, but NJPW felt the Bucks and Cody at the time weren't that important to NJPW.
Gotta also love how he downplays Cody's tweet, the bet, & Cody in general being a key factor in the birth of AEW
Bryan is right. AEW obviously benefited from the negative sentiment from fans towards WWE in 2018-2020.
ill never forget being so excited to go to jimmys seafood to watch all out 2021 and thinking it was weird that Cody wasn't on the PPV and I had this weird feeling... it was a great few years AEW..unfortunely it became more and more about tony khan and while not on TV but all the drama and negative press.

7:45 Dave credits AEW with "springing pro wrestling into the biggest period since the attitude era". But didn't this increase in business only come when Vince stepped down and they had an entire changeover in creative vision, years after AEW had already been in existence? What is the empirical proof AEW helped make WWE step up their game? In pro wrestling the star power and creative is mainly what heightens interest, what does AEW have to do with that? Is this actually empirically true or is it this nice-sounding thing we throw around to show that AEW is a force for good despite it not being profitable or competitive with WWE?
But if you credit the increase in business to a change in creative, that would suggest a cure to AEW's slumping business would be to replace the man in charge of creative.
Which brings us to the actual crux of the entire matter and the elephant in the room that Dave and Bryan don't say. What this video should have really been about. What a 5-year anniversary gives us a perfect opportunity to talk about: Tony HAS TO GIVE UP THE BOOK.
The market has shown you what it thinks of Tony Khan's creative vision. Is 5 years enough time to say OK things aren't working, maybe we can try a relief pitcher for a few innings? Would bookers of territories in the past still have a job 5 years in if they had TK's ratings and attendance track record?
Do Dave and Bryan agree that the first 5 years of AEW ideally should have been TK sitting under the learning tree and not jumping straight into the deep end? With his resources he could have hired a dream team of all the greatest wrestling minds on the planet, like Socrates being summoned to the Macedonian capital to tutor Alexander the Great.
Instead he is like a person who never did an apprenticeship and instead went straight into being a foreman doing things incorrectly for 5 years straight. How exactly do we expect him to get any better? What reason do we have to expect the next 5 years won't be a continual slide down the same trajectory?
The problem is the creative, bottom line. If the creative were good and business was still slumping, ok, then you can look for excuses why it is slumping. But as long as the creative and the booking is bad there's no reason to look any further.
You need to fix that before looking at any other reasons why the product is cold. This is the crucial mistake Dave and Bryan make. They avoid the elephant in the room that Tony needs to give up the book and spend time being a student or it will never get any better.
Dave and Bryan, you have to start admitting Tony Khan isn't good at creative. I know it might seem futile to expect a billionaire to humble himself in such a way, but what choice do we have, the health of AEW and maybe the industry as a whole could depend on this. Let TK know he would be surprised how much respect he would gain from people.

2019 is regarded as the worst year for wwe creatively. 2020 -2021 sucked for its own reasons. Why on earth would Dave try to defend what was a death product that was hemorrhaging viewers to make AEW look better in contrast? Tf is wrong with this guy?

I'm happy about AEW's success. I don't watch anymore but it's good to have more places for wrestlers and fans. I hope it's around for a long time. I just doubt that it will be. I don't know how long TK will be willing to burn the amount he's burning. Maybe it'll become profitable. I don't know. But I just wonder how long they're planning on running empty arenas and when they inevitably go to smaller buildings regularly will people still watch? If it looks like TNA will that be a compelling product for enough viewers to sustain it? I don't know. I'm not at all confident that they'll be around in ten years or even five. I just can't confidently say "I believe they will be around for the long haul" as much as I wish I could

The Worst Year in WWE history is without a doubt June 2010 to June 2011.
People have short term memory these days, that fucking year in WWE from June 2010 to June 2011 was the worst the company had ever been.
May 2017 to June 2022 was rough, but not as bad as as June 2010 to June 2011 was.
But tbh WWE has only ever had 2 good periods, from January 1984 to August 1992. And March 1997 to June 2006.

I was out of wrestling for a long time... definitely was sick of the Vince BS...AEW came along and now I'm watching more wrestling than ever. Every promotion...working with other promotions was really interesting to me. I had no idea there was a whole other world of talent out there and I thank AEW for that. 😊
Oh my God. Dave just can’t accept that a big part of AEW’s early success was his awful WWE was. He’s in dreamland.
I find it very telling that Dave can't even comprehend what Brian is arguing. Yes, business was worse for WWE back in the mid-90s. But the shows were more watchable. As a fan, I can go back and enjoy the Bret and Shawn era, the Flair/Macho/Perfect era, and so on. Yes, there was some stupid stuff, but there was also enough there to make it entertaining. And there were actual stories being told verses the mid to late 2010s era.

The fist episode of Dynamite had almost a million and a half viewers. It has been dropping steadily since then and that trend will continue because of the fact that the company has no management.
5-years in and AEW’s greatest single accomplishments are forcing WWE creative to chanfe for the better, contributing to making Cody the biggest babyface in modern pro-wrestling, and getting CM Punk to come out of retirement.
all out 2021 was amazing as well...that first double or nothing and the general excitement about a wrestling company by younger, popular wrestlers for wrestling fans...The more Tony Khan began to become more front and center, the more it started to really stink...that whole fake punches thing, really allowed Tony Khan to feel like he knew better and AEW was able to coast off a few big signings while things were falling apart at the seams. Ill never understand how he just let Cody go...man i was so mad about that and to provide no real reason

The fact that the only bright spot that aew fans can talk about the current state of aew is wembly which was almost a year ago says a lot. We all wanted this to work just like we wanted tna to work but when it turns into a dumpster fire most of us can admit it’s a dumpster fire
Thought the low point was the New Generation era. I would pay a lot of money to forget most of that era.

2019 was the crest of the indie wrestling wave. If they had gotten this company going in 2016 or 2017, maybe even 2018, they’d have had a couple of years before the pandemic to get momentum going and indie wrestling would’ve been at its hottest because the WWE product was so lukewarm.

@@kaujuanrichey7100 I agree with you, but I was commenting on them saying that they started AEW at the “perfect time.” Their whole schtick is that they’re here to democratize pro-wrestling and fight the evil empire, but that sentiment was probably at its hottest a few years sooner.

Dave is crazy, been watching WWE since 1998 and 2010-2013 was light years better than 2018/2019. We got HBK/Undertaker 2, Summer of Punk, Nexus, Rock/Cena, debut of the Shield..etc where as in 2018/19 we got dog food, matches not going past commercial breaks, and different pairings of heel Drew, Dolph, Corbin and Lashley for months on end. It was brutal.
