I Owned a 2010 328i xdrive. The rad. Blew at 100k cuz its plastic:) and the sunroof opened one night, and never closed:).. other than that it was a good car.. but both expensive repairs..

I've had both a bmw and mercedes in my family. Scotty is so right. Both cars after 80k miles had non stop problems. Never buying either one again. My 15 mazda 6 has 160k. Ive yet to have a single problem.
It's to bad because the Germans used to make great engineered mechanical products. Now we can finally say that Germany produces crap..
Did you buy them both new?. If not you cannot be talking about two cars you didn’t do maintenance on them as they were required too.

My 2003 Toyota Tacoma hit 500k miles yesterday. Its not the most exciting thing to drive but it's 4wd, does everything I ask of it & has been the least expensive truck to keep maintained that I've ever owned.

My friend has been a BMW mechanic for 30 years. He said you never want to own a modern German car if it is out of warranty as it will cost you an arm and a leg to maintain it. I did own a 1987 325 four door and that was a very reliable car.
I will argue this: I bought a 2008 328i for $4500. Owned it for 3 years. Put probably $4000 into it in repairs but if you take away new tires and brakes and shocks (wear items that you’d pay for on ANY car) it’s like $2500. So for $7000 total I’ve owned a smooth, quiet, attractive, leather appointed sedan. But, including everything, not cherry picking “BMW-Specific” repairs got it for purchase price + about $112 a month

A customer of mine came in with what he thought was a small oil leak in his engine, The engine had a 1\2" layers of oil dirt built up, i sprayed it off with a steam cleaner then every gasket leaked even lots worse than before cleaning. The dirt layer on the engine was holding most of the oil in, LOL
Emissions regulations are stricter in the United States for cars than they are for trucks. So BMW, Volkswagen, Audi etc decided that if you make a car out of plastic, you save weight - and money - to give customers the performance they want while meeting smog laws.
BMW is a huge offender. They have come up with a ridiculous number of plastic clips, latches, caps, belts, straps, buttons and other light-weight fasteners to hold their crappy cars together for three years until the warranty is up. Then the car is DOA.

Yup! We just finished a new oil cooler gasket on a 07 A5....so much plastic junk. People dream of having a Beamer but sadly they are garbage. Volvo, Mercedes, Land Rover also sad for parts.
The coil swap is a nice easy test to check :)
My roommate had a 2009 BMW 3 series. He needed me to jump start his car with my 2005 Honda Civic because his alternator died. And there were other problems, like it being expensive to replace headlights, whereas I could reach in and install mine by hand. Eventually he couldn't make the payments and the car got repossessed, which he was happy about because he was tired of paying for it.
He couldn't maintain it. BMWs are not for students!

This is the reason why I only drive Honda's and Toyota's. I HATE having consistent issues on cars, it drives me insane.
I don't think Kia's are *THAT* bad for the initial cost, but yeah, basically you're probably right.
I have 2 BMWs and yes they spend more time at the mechanic shop than the road and it's not just about the money you spend in maintenance but about the time you spend taking it to the mechanic shop ,etc

Same thing happened to my Audi. Do not buy coils form autozone and or o’reilly. They will kill your car.
A coil went bad on my Peugeot when the car only had 80K km on it. Peugeot seems to use the same coils as bmw. I did replace all the coils and spark plugs while at it.
Where would you suggest we get coils and car parts from?
What year and model Audi? I have two AZ coils on our 01 A8 and they work fine. I tried a junkyard coil and it lasted about 30 miles. Im pretty sure the newer style Audi coils are reasonably priced from the dealer.

Amen brother as a former BMW and Jaguar Tech I can say they are junk , thank God. I was a Ford ASSET grad and American cars are poorly engineered and not designed to ever be taken apart again and they want you to pay them to do warranty work. Up to 2008 BMWs were better with no turbos and they paid great labor times.the later cars had tons of problems with piezoelectric Italian fuel injectors and oil leaks and every new model release came with a booklet of recalls and updates. And more special tools that only snappy sold.

He had to use a damm prop to hold the Mercedes hood open. The hood struts on the damm $75,000 Mercedes crapped out and he had to use something to prop the hood open. Hilarious. But sad.

A hood prop essentially has a zero failure rate yet companies put the dumb struts on.
Mercedes hood has a service mode that opens it vertically and locks it. Why doesn't he use it?
I’ve always wondered why BMW’s and Mercedes at auctions sell for about twenty to thirty percent of what they originally cost new, now I know.

I'm very surprised that Scotty was able to get to the number 6 coil and spark plug out without removing the cabin filters and housing covering the back portion of the engine. If you take that section out then it is easy to get to the coils and plugs.
This is very true but if he knew that the rant about plastic covers would be over the roof and into the neighbors kitchen sink.
I love it, Scotty starts ranting (entirely justified ranting) at only 34 seconds in and keeps up a steady stream from there, that takes some practice.
It seems with all this plastic parts it's Planned obsolescence depending on age/mileage at this point. Buy new, drive X amount, buy another one and another one...

Scotty, on the BMW: the plastic tray above the back of the engine is removable giving you easy access to cylinder #6. Yes more plastic crap to take off, but once you get it all off its easy to access to everything.

My son's 2003 BMW X5 has 213k miles on it and has been relatively trouble free. Only small things have gone wrong, particularly with the doors, including handles, latching mechanism, window regulator, etc.

PLASTIC everyone uses it to build vehicles. I have been a Diesel Mechanic for over 30 years and EVERY engine has plastic inside and out. YES it sucks but it is not just a BMW thing.

@@rokitman5753 As matter of fact YES I was stationed in Germany for three years and every GI who owned a BMW spent their free time trying to fix them, unless they were top brass and drove a new one. I went a different route and bought an Opel Ascona for 800 bucks ran great lasted me the whole time

My 2006 BMW 3 series has 315,000 trouble free miles.
Owned it from new, amazed at the amazing reliability.

That BMW was completely fine lol. The only issue with the brand in North America is that people treat these cars like status symbols and dealerships keep ripping people off with insane service and part prices.
That's everywhere mate, the parts for BMW are ridiculous in Australia, the cars are all pieces of sht now, I forgot when the last good one was made, maybe 2004, once they started making them in South Africa instead of Germany, the quality disappeared

@@captinbeyond The price I looked up is for a 2009 335i which is what this looks like. Why didn't he replace all spark plugs and coils? The answer is quite simple. Scotty is a shoddy mechanic and his videos have shown that many times.

I had to replace the spark plugs 2 years after I bought my MINI and had to replace each coil pack each year, lol. Ridiculous

What gets on my nerves are kids who buy used BMWs and think they're driving around in a Rolls-Royce. They double park and think everyone is going to move out of their way on the road for their used piece of shiny junk. I had a coworker once who always doubled parked his used BMW that he paid $10K for. I told him that my used Toyota was worth thousands more than his BMW. I proceeded to ask him, "Should I also take up 2 parking spots, considering my car is worth more than yours?" 😂😂😂 Don't get me wrong, I ain't hating on BMW lovers, but we all know someone like this.
I think the fact that the Mercedes needed a hood prop rod would have been enough to deter me from buying one.

This brings up an interesting question. When looking to buy a used vehicle, what are your thoughts about putting some of that UV oil in the engine of the vehicle you're wanting to buy? Seems like if would be a great way to keep from purchasing one that's leaking from the head gaskets. And since it does no damage to the engine in question, the owner "shouldn't" have a problem with it, UNLESS they've got something to hide. So Scotty, what are your thoughts on this?
Love this guy! We all know that we inevitably need to provide maintenance, or repair it. Why not make it easier to do this, which will pass savings in terms of $$$ along to consumers. He is right on target!

Back in 2009 I bought a '98 Saturn with a tad over 164K miles on it. It's still running like a top. [Wink.] JMO.

150k is not high mileage by today's standards. There is no excuse for a modern car to not go 200k miles without major issues. Its kinda sad that the automotive industry still cant make a vehicle as reliable as any 90s toyota product.

@@michaelnikprelaj6679 its probably 4 Torx bolts across the front just like my E46. You need 3 tools for the whole job on mine and can have #6 out in 15 minutes.

also if Scotty was a real mechanic, he would replace all spark plugs. Replacing just 1 is like just adding new oil instead of replacing it.
@@korencek you're ideal customer of auto shops. I bet you always buy four tires, four struts etc and keep the land fill full. Plugs work independently, one crappy plug = worse fuel consumption, that's it. Stop whining.
@@donniebunkerboi9975 yes I always buy all 4 tyres and change them every 3 to 4 years. Not because I need to but because I want to. Safety is number 1 priority. And 500€ for new tyres is not much. I don't buy struts because my car doesn't rust. I always wash and wax even underneath the car.
BMW'S are incredible cars if you maintain them properly. In exchange you get incredible performance. Not hard to work on if you know what you are doing. I have two and this particular model is one of them. Scotty should have removed cabin filter housing for easier access to plug 6. All plugs and coils should have been replaced after 12 years. Then Scotty rev's the crap out of the engine before warmed up. Not good for turbos. Most people should drive Honda or Toyota vehicles- basic transport appliances. Personally, the maintenance for German engineering is a small price to pay for a true driving experience.

Keys hanging from a front belt loop is not really a good idea when working on cars... Tends to be hard on the paint job!

3.5 Nissan V6 is an awesome engine. Lots of them in Infinitis on RUclips that are going strong with 300,000 miles.
My 08 Altima coupe has 380,000 km and I’m on the original clutch - and truth be told I skimped even on basic maintenance. Last year bought a 370z - hope for good fortune on that one as well.

have an '05 350z w 108K miles. still running strong. but i use a specialty garage precision z in canoga park, ca which helps. highly recommend for nissan if in So Cal.

Wow, you are really clueless when it comes to BMW's, NEVER change just on coil, change them all, they are NOT expensive. Never just change on spark plug, change them all, they are typically good for 90k miles. Access to #4, 5, and 6 is easy if you know what to remove. Never use that junk scanner on a BMW. The plastic parts are all high temp.
Please go back to Toyota and leave the German cars alone, you will just break them.
Spark plugs for E46 BMW are one of the easiest, cheapest and accessible DYI. Just $60 for Bosh\NGK spark plugs, anti-seize and (regular socket tool) using no more than 2 hours of time.

Yeah I made that mistake with the BMW Scotty , i’ve bought one it it ran perfect up to 100,000 soon after 100,000 it never stopped tearing up and was very expensive to fix
haha IDK what you guys do wrong but Ive had 3 BMW that I ran to more than 250,000 miles without issues, my current favorite car is my BMW 2008 Dinan 335 S3 with 320,000 miles on her and she still puts out 472HP.

Watch out for those belt buckles to. They ruin paint insist on A fender cover or a thick towel to cover cars while they work on them
That M113 Mercedes V8 engine is just about the best engine ever made. Reliable, economical, smooth. The only common issue is a leaking valve cover gasket which is easy to repair. That is it.
I bought a 2006 used bmw 3 series with a bunch of miles on it I've recently replaced the thermostat and alternator and now the starter started to fail the good thing is I can do it myself

I was going to say that comes off probably with 4 torx bolts. I can have the #6 coil out in 15 minutes on my E46.

@@lawnside82 I had 2 bmws before. One was new 3series and one was older 5series v8. The v8 5series was a pos. My 03 m3 had 55k miles when i sold it. I've have never seen any bmw owners can confirm that the 5, 6, and 7 series are reliable up to 170k miles. NA v6 3 series is the only model that is somewhat reliable. The rest of the lineups are trash. That is a fact.
I'm disappointed you only replaced the one coil. All 6 coils should be replaced at this time if they had more than 30K miles on them. They will very likely start failing one by one as they did on my 2003 Mazda Tribute 6cyl. I ended up spending more than $2000 to finally have all 6 replaced. The coils are only $60 each ($360 total) but I wouldn't have been broken down 6 times over 3 years with this ultimately very expensive ongoing repair. My mechanics only replaced one at a time and 3 of them are inside the intake manifold which cost $450 (Coil + Gasket + Labor) for each coil that was replaced not including towing charges as the vehicle wouldn't go 100 feet without sounding like the engine was being damaged. Otherwise, Thank you for your show. I really enjoy it!

I would not buy a BMW, a Mercedes-Benz or a Nissan in general. I can plan to buy a Hyundai or a Mazda instead. For example, the Elantra, the Sonata, the Tucson and the Santa Fe are great vehicles from Hyundai, while the Mazda 3, the Mazda 6 and the Mazda CX-5 are excellent. Those are the vehicles, I would own in the foreseeable future.

I bought a brand new '02 Altima with the V6 and manual trans because I like to go fast and shift my own gears but had kids to haul around. The only things that ever needed to be replaced in 14 years (besides tires) were the clutch at 70k, the spark plugs at 100k as recommended, a rear wheel hub bearing that was getting noisy, and the power steering pump after 100k. When it got to 150k, I couldn't believe that the original brake pads were still working well. Since we live in a hilly area, I had them replaced anyway. It had been such a good car, I planned to keep it until it died. When it was 14 years old and at almost 200k, I was driving in stop & go traffic and ran hard into the back of someone because I wasn't paying good enough attention. The impact killed the engine and burst the radiator and most of coolant leaked out onto the payment. When the police got there, they asked me to see if I could move it out of the lane onto the shoulder, and I said I didn't think it would start. Damned if it didn't start right up and sounded normal. I put it in gear and moved onto the shoulder. Of course being so old, it was totaled. It was a really good and enjoyable car. I'm sure Scotty knows what he's talking about when he hates on Nissan. Mine must have been a fluke!
Nah, your's isn't a fluke, there are tons of Nissan's that are just fine. I still have my '04 Maxima and it runs like new. I took care of it and the car has been nothing but a joy to own. The Nissan's with CVT's are crap, but if you can find one without a CVT, like your Altima or an Infiniti, they are excellent cars, just as reliable as a Honda or a Toyota. The incessant hate that Nissan gets is uncalled for and is usually done by fanboys.

Grey market, oil weight can be an issue. 1540 or 2050 can solve some leaks. They were designed for temperatures in Europe. Here,in the US, it 8s warmer. That has an effect.
Scotty, for the BMW you should use Delphi coils and NGK iridium or ruthenium spark plugs !

Ah that old chestnut......we have 3 older BMW's (early to mid 2000's) that are well looked after and maintained properly and seem to be no more troublesome than any other car of that age, in fact, apart from normal wear and maintainence, we've had no trouble with them. I've learnt how to do most of the repair and maintainence myself, which obviously makes a huge difference to cost of ownership, but even if I didn't, I doubt it would be very different to most other cars (just don't go to dealers)
We also have a Toyota (Tarago) of similar age that's been through 3 alternators in about 4 years, water pump, electric power steering pump and now needs a valve cover gasket.......all normal stuff for a car of it's age. It's been a great car and still is, but just needs maintainence.
I've also had 2 Toyota Cressidas in the past and it was a given that they blew head gaskets at about 120,000 klm's (as mine did at great expense)
What amuses me though is that Toyota gets away with this stuff scott(y) free and all the lovies agree, yet BMW are utterly crucified lol.
Also, don't get me wrong, I think Scotty's great, but can someone name a car built in the last decade or so that doesn't have a plastic beauty cover over the engine.....they may exist but I'm not aware of them.
I would say that most people (and I repeat, most people) who post quotes and cliche's like "If you cannot afford a new BMW, you damn sure cannot afford a used one" or this old and well used classic "there's nothing more expensive that a used BMW".......probably have never owned or driven a BMW
@@dereklyons5143 I've owned 7 BMs 3 Merc and I'm an engineer and Bosch qualified fuel injection technician and I wouldn't own a modern German car. Even though I have the skills the idea of plastic components exposed to heat isn't a great idea.

yeah, I had one ignition coil go on my Tacoma, at ONLY 217,000 miles! LOL Used same procedure to narrow it down, but changed all four, just for fun!
I have two E39 530i cars. Begin maintenance weekly. They are extremely easy to work on and the ultimate driving machine. I also have a Volvo, two Mazdas, and two F-150s. BMW for driving. Volvo for life! Miata for track day.
