Late to the party as always - the Boss Angry Driver - came onto my radar this year as it's sort of an amalgamation of two pedals (Boss Blues driver and @jhspedals Angry Charlie ) that are important to @andytimmonsguitarx-perienc7391 guitar tone and regularly occupy his pedalboard. Honestly, I think this is a pedal that could prove incredibly useful for a lot of folks, so I'm glad that I found one on eBay to try!

The stacked settings will produce the most genuine “80’s” solo sounds I’ve heard out of a pedal, especially on a small bedroom rig, and I’ve tried MOST of them. If you’re playing on small rig, get this pedal for solo tone.
B->J or J->B?
@@SergeiVlassov I ran it into a 5 watt Marshall. I don’t recall which toggle setting, but I do recall the sound was immediate and didn’t require much knob turning. It sounded liquid like early 80’s. The pedal does the work!
Great demo, very clear instructions, great job 👏 👏👏👏👏👍
I have this pedal too and absolutely love it. Probably prefer the Blues Driver side by a nose but I love having two options in 1 pedal space (plus the remote).
This + the HX Stomp has been my mainstay function band board for ages. With the additional footswitch option it's such a versatile rig
Hey John! That's based on the chassis of the Boss SD-2 that I sent you a picture of! Josh from JHS said he loved the pedal but this is the logical extension of what it could be.. Cheers!
You weren't kidding about this one - very versatile! Nice demo ... 🤓
Wow I had to subscribe to your channel I apreciate do you're doing videos about almost everything I have been buying this last month🙌🏼😄
I've been hearing about this pedal. Wow sounds incredible!
Came for the review (which was great), but just wanted to say how much I love your playing! So musical and tasty, superb..I can definitely hear the Andy influence, keep at it mate, wishing you every success 👍👏❤
Nathan, the beauty of your channel is knowing that in addition to insightful information about products, I’m going to enjoy some good music. Your playing just makes me feel good. Two suggestions: 1) a video on your process to making backing tracks, and 2) a solo album just featuring you and your backing tracks. I’d happily listen to it driving to and from work.
Dude I love your playing style, there's only certain musicians who can make it look THAT effortless while still being melodic at the same time. This is exactly the style I always aim for as well, strong and effective. Awesome video, happy to sub!
Went and picked one of these up today, really like the angry Charlie side for lead, gonna pick up a remote switch to get the most out of it on my board.
this tone rules. so organic.
I bought mine as soon as it came out. I'm going to tell you it totally sucks only because I think it's a secret weapon pedal on my board. If Boss is smart they'll release some more boutique (specifically JHS?) collabos, all of which I will be buying...Collect 'em all!
This pedal can make any amp sound like a metal beast
I had both of the pedals individually, but got rid of them as i went back to using amp distortion with Victory's V4 Valve preamp pedals. It's a cool idea this pedal, but I don't like having the dual pots! You made it sound good though :)
Pick one up about a year ago use it has my main drive pedal. Typically run it with the blues drive into JHS with the remote switch. For a milder boost I use the TC electric Zeus after the blues diver.
John, can you make a video on how you incorporate your sliding techniques in your legato runs. Thanks!
I bet you can get close on the Helix. 😊
I love my Helix. ❤
I have both the blues driver and the angry charley, both because I love Andy Timmons, lately I’ve been using only a Wampler Belle at a relatively high gain to reach the tone of this pedal, to do lower gain stuff I use my volume pot in my guitar, I find the Belle a lot more dynamic than the angry charley or the blues driver. Have you ever tried that Nobels ODR circuit?
Would be interesting to try and replicate similar in the HX with parallel drives.
If you ran it in the loop of the helix, could you use the amp channel switching functionality in the remote jack to switch between sounds?
I bought the pedal and I really enjoy it. Could you suggest any settings to play SRV (I also have an SD1 to put in the chain if needed) and others to play black keys and hendrix (I know that probably I need a fuzz but I think that it could play ... fuzz-sounding ... don't it ?)
Only thing that bugs me is there dont seem to be any videos of this pedal boosting a heavy distorted amp because this thing is thick and powerful!
What scale or mode are you playing?
The Boss SD-2 Dual Overdrive (discontinued) also has a remote jack for a switcher pedal so you can switch between bypass, crunch and lead settings. It has similar concentric knobs and a Mode knob. I think the Angry Driver layout is actually based on the SD-2.
It is . Josh released a video about it. I have the SD-2, have since it was new.. The pedal's run was very short lived, but Josh really dug the SD-2.
This takes the pedal to another level, Mine can't do the parallel thing, or the one stage into the next thing.. And though the crunch side of the SD-2 sounds pretty good, The lead side was always not quite there compared to it. I have been drooling over, and too poor to roll the dice on, the JHS / Boss pedal since I saw the JHS release video about it.
@@christopherjbutler I also have an SD-2, it was my main drive pedal for many years in the 90s and early 2000s. Strangely though, I very much liked the Lead channel! I vastly prefer that sound to the DS-1!
@@jakollee To be honest, It has been long enough since I used it that
a) I might not remember which side I liked better, or
b) My tastes in what I like as a lead tone have changed lol.
Don't get me wrong, it was MY main drive pedal when I couldn't bring my Roland GP-100 rack rig and went with a Tech21 Trademark 60 combo, the SD-2, a Digitech X-Series delay, and a crybaby.. I liked both channels with that setup, but one more than the other. I am going to actually pull it out and rig it up this weekend with the TM 60 again and see how both sides sound :)
@@christopherjbutler have fun with it!
@@jakollee I hooked it up! now that I know better what I truly like for lead tone in general, you're right, that leave channel is Killer. The crunch channel has only a certain range or maybe two ranges where it can sound fantastic I found those ranges this weekend I have it going into Tech21 CompTortion set to emulate the feel of a compressed edge of breakup power section, that is going into a Blackstar Fly 3 practice amp set up for fender clean sound with tons of headroom. The SD2 and the CompTortion combos give me some gorgeous tone options. I love the SD2 pedal all over again
When I listen to JNC Play . . . I forget about the Pedal, and get lost in his Tasty Playing. He can make a $20 pedal sound like a Dumble-amp.
How does one make this bass sound like in this backing track?
+1 I have the JB-2 on my board, and it's very versatile for Marshall tones. Surprisingly, it's also a great low gainer, like you showed well in your lovely intro. I use mine in parallel mode 80% of the time, and love it! I don't know if this is unique to this pedal, but I haven't found other drive pedals with parallel circuits. Anyone know of other drives with parallel?
Pigtronix disnortion mini
TC Electronic Nova Drive , it is also MIDI and programmable.
This video is awesome and I respect your opinion. I owned the Angry Driver and I don’t like it. I have the original blues driver and an angry Charlie. I love them. I am a Boss fan. But this pedal doesn’t sound good. The blues driver side is ok but is not as woody as the original and the JHS side sounds terrible. It has so much compression. Plus it’s a very noisy pedal. Just my two cents: I don’t recommend it at all.
Your playing makes me want to burn my guitar. Incredible dude.
I'll continue with my Electro Harmonix hot wax duel overdrive pedal...
I've been tempted to get this a few times, but when I think why I hesitated, it's mainly because it's TOO versatile, ironically. With a drive pedal, most players would probably like one or two very clearly defined sound options, and not too much thinking and fiddling between them. I have the JHS double barrel, and that seems to be as many switches and options as I can handle on an overdrive/distorion. (I know this one is a bit dirtier, but I'm talking about handling and options.) When I see those double knobs, my reptilian (=guitar player) brain says "too many possibilities!". Also, this thing is 225 bucks now, which I find, frankly, a bit insane.
It’s very intuitive and doesn’t have a bad sound in it. Creativity just flows.
@@johnpasch9649 Well that sounds great.
Can’t see the settings on the outer ring.
I had the JB-2 for a bit, but I didn’t really enjoy it as much as I thought I would, so I sold it.
Same here 👍🏻
@@mdmusic2130 Yeah it really didn’t sound like the standalone BD-2. I can’t speak on the Angry Charlie side, but I didn’t even really like the sound of it at all. Also, I wish they would remake the SD-2, but you can still find them on Reverb/eBay anyway. A Waza version would be nice.
@@thehonestpedalreviews Totally agree with you. They did it now a Waza version of the DS1. Maybe they will come out with a SD2 Waza soon.
JHS makes an Andy Timmons OD
I love the fact that the stacked knobs don't drag each other when you turn them. Typical Boss design quality
Just wish you could do each individually plus stacked. They should have made this functionally with a TRS input. Soooo close...
Too much fizzy edge in the higher gain settings for my ear
Would you please do a tutorial on your artificial harmonics technique at 2:35? It sounds so good! Like Ted Greene.
On NUX Cerberus i have same pedals, and it has option too to change their order or put them in parallel, and because Cerberus is programmable, you can have all the variations with gains and volumes etc, plus for the 200 pounds(?) you get modulation effects and delay and reverb too, 😀
That if anything,, is really bargain.
But yes, Angry driver is good.
I was a little underwhelmed by it. I like the blues driver, but angry Charlie was meh. I prefer the AT... though I use the demon fx clone. I pair that with their kot clone... king of drive. They sound great! I want to snatch a JHS AT just because I like the knock-off so much... maybe get the Duke of tone to go along...
King of Drive is King! Incredible pedal.
The Strymon Sunset can do the same things
What's the price difference?
@@davidforsythe8231 the Sunset new is like $299 and it's fully midi.
@@jefffranklin2294 I am thinking of trying the riverside. I know it's different then the sunset but I loved the one I played around with at the store.
@@davidforsythe8231 they're both great and different. The Sunset has 6 drives and a boost with a noise gate in one pedal. That's a bargain in itself
That pedal is junk turns signal into pure square wave.
That pedal is junk
It sounds great, but....some of that money is going to Josh Scott and I just don't really want to be involved with helping him get rich for reasons everyone already knows.
For what reasons? I’m in the dark.
I don’t know
I’ve owned a pedal store since 2014 and had quite a bit to do with Josh Scott, and I’m not sure what you’re referring to. And no, I’m not a JHS dealer - I just think the guy’s done a HEAP more good for the pedal industry than any (alleged) wrongdoings.
All I can say is take what’s said on TGP with a real big grain of salt.
Oh please. Josh does more for the pedal industry than anyone. And the stuff you’re referring to he had nothing to do with and distanced himself from the situation.
@@dustinmckinney6480 1) the angry Charlie is a 1:1 copy of mi crunch box & there are several other pedals jhs claims as original circuits that are not. 2) he was a supporter of a virulently homophobic church & has referred to jhs pedals as a "ministry"
