Does the Xiegu X6100 overheat?

  • In this video I take the Xiegu X6100 up a SOTA summit for the 3rd time (Dixie Benchmark W7A/MN-131). On the 2nd outing, the radio got extremely hot while operating. I wasn't sure if this was just from sun exposure or something within the radio. So I decided to eliminate the sun as a factor on this Summits on the Air activation. There were a couple of surprises along the trail too - you never know what you will encounter when you get out and activate portable.
    Thank you to Radioddity for lending me the X6100!

    It's one thing if it heats up a bit, but those birdies need to be addressed by Xiegu. Thanks for the ongoing review.

    • @RedSummitRF
      @RedSummitRF  2 года назад +1

      Yeah those birdies are a concern. I'm still a little perplexed by them. I don't really know the source. They present strange behavior like they aren't always in the same place and are mostly only present when connected to an antenna. But I can literally be in the middle of nowhere and they are still present. It makes portions of the band unusable. Most annoying is there seems to be a birdie always floating around 7.033-34 which is a prime QRP CW waterhole. Anyway, thanks for watching the video, Joe.

      @haramanggapuja 8 месяцев назад

      Yep. Just within the USA bands between 3.5 & 30 MHz I counted some 75 birdies, most of which were at least S3 and some S6 and above. On 6m the birdies made the band damn near useless. And of course it gets very warm just sitting there letting the battery run down. Far warmer than the IC705 gets doing the same. But those birdies! Another great failed design from Chairman Xi’s copy-cat slave camps.

      @@RedSummitRF If they are only there when connected to an antenna they are NOT "birdies", birdies will be there all the time as they are generated internal to the radio, that is the definition of a birdie! What they are in your case I cannot say but I have lots of signals like that where I live, and on different radios, they are simply QRM in my case.

    Good video Charlie and another nice looking summit. Nice views of the hot air balloons. I thought that maybe the voltage on the external battery may have been different to the internal one and may have caused heat issues but looking online that's not the case. The Xeigu seems a lot of radio for the money with some good features too. I'm sure that it will be very popular.

    The manual says: "Do not place the device in a place where the temperature is higher than 60°C; otherwise, the battery
    pack may rupture or catch fire." This radio inside certainly has a higher temperature. If the battery catches fire, whose fault will it be?

    I got my Xiegu X6100 a few days ago. Today I was operating on 15m for the first time (portable) and had some nice QSOs. Reports were good. I was using external power supply/LiFePo battery and operating 10 W. Charging was off in the menu. Nevertheless the X6100 got really hot. I guess I could have cooked an egg on it. I was in a shady place. Will have an eye on that and probably attach some additional cooling elements on the back.

    • @RedSummitRF
      @RedSummitRF  2 года назад +1

      This is an interesting report. I was not able to reproduce my overheating issues. It seemed rather random. Let me know if you narrow down the cause.

    • @florian7346
      @florian7346 2 года назад

      @@RedSummitRF I discussed this issue in a German Facebook Xiegu x6100 group. Other OMs mentioned that heating up is pretty normal when operating with 10 W. One OM assumed that the amplifying curcuit for the 10 W might be the cause for heating up. Another operator mentioned that the TRX is not really made to hold long OSQs or many QSOs in a short period of time.

It's an appealing radio and since I won't be getting a TX500 in the foreseeable future - very bummed - I'm interested to try this. Hi Eric - I actually think it's the hot Arizona sun and me being a dumb ass lol. I have one more experiment before I send it off to you, but I don't think overheating is a problem.
