  • In this RUclips Short video, I reveal what's inside some quartz crystal resonators - a quartz crystal resonator teardown.
From old to new, quartz crystal resonators come in all shapes and sizes. They're used in all manner of electronic circuits providing high quality resonators to give stable and accurate signals.
As the circuit symbol implies, they contain a slice of quartz crystal which is held between two electrodes.
So to investigate more about them, I took an old 1940s crystal apart and as I hope you can make out there is the slice of quartz between two metal electrodes. You see a teardown.
There are many modern crystals as well. From the larger ones to very small surface mount ones.
I broke into one. The metal can is sealed and its either evacuated or filled with an inert gas.
As you can see here wires come up from the connections to the outside to the electrodes which are plated onto the quartz.
