  • Deutsche Grammophon is set to release 'Retrospective I', a deluxe hardcover book edition with a CD box set featuring seven of Jóhann's early works including 'The Miners' Hymns', 'Copenhagen Dreams', 'Virðulegu Forsetar' and a previously unreleased score 'White Black Boy'. It's the first part of a two-volume release with 'Retrospective II' being released in 2020.
To celebrate the release of 'Retrospective I', producer Áine Devaney and filmmaker Blair Alexander traced Jóhann's roots back to his home town of Reykjavík, Iceland to speak to some of the people who knew him best. It's a rare and insightful glimpse at the places and stories that shaped the person who later became the composer we now know as Jóhann Jóhannsson.

Every piece of his music was a work of art, it was beautiful in so many ways. As they said, we have lost one of the greats he will live on with us through his music

It is so sad that this singular artist, who composed such exceptional, distinctive and above all beautiful music left us … so soon. Naturally, there is a great sense of sadness … but there is also gratitude too. Gratitude that we can experience Jóhann Jóhannsson's musical environment with such profound emotion, respect and love.

This made me cry again for the loss of Johann and the music uncomposed and unheard from his genius. Such a beautiful short film. Thank you.

what's really sad is the rewriting of history, of which Jóhann was *incredibly* aware of.
