Hi 👋 ! My Name is Alice, I created The Mini ADHD Coach in August 2020 when I was just diagnosed with ADHD at 29.
After years of questioning, therapy, burnout, and chaotic career path changes, I finally understood why I struggled with so many things.
So I decided to share what I learned to raise awareness around ADHD and help the ADHD community thrive.

Living with ADHD often means navigating a constantly shifting landscape of interests and hobbies. People with ADHD tend to have intense bursts of enthusiasm for new activities, only for those interests to wane as quickly as they appeared. This life cycle of interests can be both a source of excitement and frustration. One week, it's all about learning to play the guitar, and the next, it's a newfound fascination with painting. Understanding and accepting this ebb and flow is the first step in effectively managing hobbies and interests.
To effectively manage the ever-changing interests associated with ADHD, it's crucial to embrace flexibility. Rather than resisting these shifts, individuals can learn to adapt. One helpful approach is to remain open to new interests and allow room for exploration. Recognize that not every fascination needs to become a lifelong passion. By being adaptable and open to change, individuals with ADHD can harness the energy and enthusiasm they feel for various hobbies, allowing for a more fulfilling and diverse range of experiences. This approach promotes personal growth and creativity while mitigating frustration often associated with abrupt changes in interests.
While flexibility is important, establishing a consistent routine can help individuals with ADHD manage their hobbies effectively. Allocating specific times or days for different activities can provide structure and prevent impulsively dropping one hobby for another. Additionally, breaking down larger hobbies into smaller, manageable tasks can make them more achievable and maintainable. By combining adaptability with routine, those with ADHD can strike a balance that allows them to enjoy a wide range of interests while ensuring some level of continuity in their hobbies.

The moat persistent one Is drawing, but I've all but dropped biking again. Kind of sucks because I bought a larger vehicle on the assumption I would be riding but it's looking like something to restart next year. Along 3 or 4 other interests currently on ice. I had to restart drawing many times to keep going with that one, is that common for ADD, restarting interests to keep them going?

There has to be a bingo game in this for us - watercolour paints - X, inks and calligraphy pens and kit - X, copic markers with all the skin tones - X, literally ALL the brushes, even the Chinese mops, riggers and retractable filberts (and literally no idea how to use them) - X, greeting card blanks, small and large w/c pads and even w/c postcards - tickety tick, two large crates of dress-making fabrics and notions (damn you, Aberkan, grrr) and four second hand sewing machines - because you just never know - X X X, flute - X, crochet hooks for jute (to make eco pan-scrubbers) and white cotton string (to make eco dish cloths) - X X, everything needed to make Luna and her huge wardrobe - X, guitar - X, on line course to create Art Deco digital art - X, all the left over books and study aids for Russian/French/Italian/Latin (don't ask), Japanese (likewise) and Spanish - X, all the books and study aids for all the different science courses I've really enjoyed - X, the annual diary bought to schedule all the new hobbies - X, the kit for yoga, Pilates, fancy-pants skipping (seriously, my optimism knows no limits at times - used twice for literal seconds) and weights - X, the hand-stitched (in covid times) Edwardian lace and cotton blouse I patterned from scratch - X (blaming you, @BernadetteBanner for giving me the confidence to think I just could, regardless of talent level and any experience - and even worserer, your also super talented sister who made me think for a hot minute that I too could just make original old-master-inspired-oil paintings of my friend's pets - X (lucky I still have any friends, really). I can't oil paint - but luckily the enthusiasm collapsed at the price of that kit before I could get started), the children's book I'm halfway through writing (again, started that one in lockdown) and the outline of the cosy crime book on my desk - also X and X. We all know that's as far as that will go - but at least I know who did it 😄😄.And the kit in the kitchen for making every extreme niche baking, preserved food or chocolate item ever created/invented - tickety tickety tick to eternity and back. And in front of me right now (pen in hand/ tucked behind ear), the lists to prepare for Christmas of the nonsense I'm going to make for presents (which this year will be planted in elegant vintage containers rare Amaryllises just ordered from Netherlands). Good People of the UTubes, I ask you to please pray for my people, they're exhausted already. HOUSE.@@luvvmia so challenge issued - I can't be the worst on here? 🤞🤞

And I also have a lot of creative hobbies that I cycle through based on inspiration for new projects: sewing, knitting, weaving, natural dying, carving, print making, embroidery, herbalism, learning languages, etc. 😅

I always thought that there was something wrong with me, because I never finished a single course that I have started, I quit all the lesson classes, and the greatest suffering is drawing, which I want to do, but it does not bring me pleasure (yep). As soon as I pick up a pencil and make the first sketches, I feel bad and I give up everything again. This is terrible feeling.

I’m currently trying to write a book (I’m not diagnosed with adhd but I show many characteristics and symptoms of it to the point where I’m almost 100% sure I have it). I get bored really easy, and sometimes lose that excitement to start something new before I even start, and then feel angry that I’m not doing it. I’m doing pretty good with the writing of the book, but it’s taken so much effort to get past the boring boring and actually find it in myself to write when it no longer brings me joy.
This is my exact routine, and it scares me how many signs of adhd I actually have.
I find that I also do this with food, and sometimes don’t each very much because I’m bored of all the foods in the house

And then i woke up and realized i just waste my time for sleeping, i could crochet something, sketch something, paint something, play a game, try new recipe, learn new language, watch a movie, edit something, make a video, try to learn something cool, and then i got frustrated again so i went to sleep and it goes like that on loop. What should i do? :(

my hobby hopping has made me a well rounded jack of all trades. I'll never be a master at 1 thing and that's ok with me. I find that I can starts piecing hobbies together, a hobby that I haven't touched in a while can be integrated into another which makes them both feel fresh again. I fly drones and when that got a little boring, I started 3D printing. I was able to use 3D printing to make things for drones which made that more fun. Fishing took a back seat for a while and then I started canoeing which made fishing fun again, I used 3D printing to make parts for my canoe to make fishing easier. When you realize you have hobbies that you haven't touched and start to feel hard on yourself, look for ways to combined and expand them.

Yes this is me…..It all started with making terrariums, then I moved onto Macramé. During Covid I discovered Acrylic Pouring and did that for two years, I was actually really good at it. Then I tried out Alcohol Inks for a while. Of course I also have over 100 indoor plants and recently I am really interested in photography. I live alone and enjoy having hobbies. Actually, some of my friends admire my creativity. I hope to stick with photography as it has captured my interest most of my life. But I am aware of my hobby-problem and therefore carful to not invest in expensive equipment. Yes, it’s the hunt for dopamine. You feel great when you finish an awesome painting or take a great photo. It gives me positive feedback. Much better then getting your dopamine from junk food, gambling, online shopping or other negativ sources. I am creative and enjoy giving my creations to friends etc. - nothing wrong with it!! 😊

I feel that to be worried about hobbies is a modern and recent phenomenon. I don't think 100s of years ago most of us were worried about hobbies, we had plenty we had to do to stay alive like farming, hunting, textiles, pottery making. NOW some of these are hobbies, but before they were a necessity to survive. I realize I always stick with things that I know are a necessity for my survival (like going to work every day). Why would I stick with something if it is not necessary for my survival? I think that IS what the ADHD brain is really about is being hyper-vigilant to wanting to survive and putting everything else that's not important on the backburner. The ADHD brain doesn't want to dedicate the mental bandwidth to activities that are not necessary for survival like reading or writing or sitting in a boring classroom for hours. If you put an ADHD brained person in the jungle where they have to run away from tigers and snakes or whatever other predators there are, trust me they aren't going to get "bored" from running away. If you put an ADHD brain person to go fishing and realizing that that's the only way they are going to feed their family, they are not going to get "bored" of fishing.
