    My father (retired now) used to do the engineering calculations behind bridges. As a kid, I used to marvel at them whenever we drove over bridges that "do their job" based on his calculations. I think about the millions of trips taken by drivers over the years across the bridges that he made sure were safe and structurally sound. All those people whose lives he positively impacted are unaware of his contributions. We all impact one another, in many untold ways...it is our responsibility to move through this life with benevolence and virtue!

Or maybe take a beat to realize that the road you drive on, the car your drive, the building you work in, elevator you ride to your office and much more rely upon the conscientiousness and personal integrity of those who were charge to manufacture, deliver, assemble and finish the work of constructing them and others to check on their soundness and properness for use as intended (and maybe a little beyond that). And perhaps you can appreciate how good will and virtue play an oh so significant role in our lives.

      @ohh geez rick Oh please tell me you joking... Bridges have been used for CENTURIES to move people, horses, carts, troops, good, etc over water. The Arkadiko Bridge in Ancient Greece was built in 13,000 BC and is still standing!! Please do some research before you say something as ignorant as "bridges are only needed because of our use of cars"

      I believe the ocean floor is mapped and studied , depth is one factors to determined if a bridge could go over, not all areas of the ocean are very deep.

      I am the same way, only time I think about the bridge I cross everyday is when a road crew or w/e has traffic stopped on bridge and I feel it bouncing then I am like you assholes need to get this shit moving

    I’ve been an iron worker for 10 years and I’ve always wanted to be on a bridge project. They are modern marvels to me. These guys who build these have to be fearless

      Get into fiber optics my guy. If you’re not afraid of water , even better. Working on undersea cables pays a shit ton. I am terribly afraid of deep water so the opportunity passed me. But for others, go get it.

    I worked on bridges/overpasses/concrete structures and really liked it.Worked on the road all the time,never made it back to where I lived till season was over.It's not a job for someone with a family,it's for the single guy and this one had fun.Never bothered buying a house untill I was 37,would have never been in it much...but I have one now.Resigential construction now,renovating houses,really like this as well...yee haw !

      Pontoon bridges are bridges where the weight is held up by several boats tied underneath the bridge

    So they pile in soil/rock to creat temporary islands with shallow builds. But for super deeper water locations, they just get giant poles, ram them in till they get near the surface? Then start pouring concrete on top? Or pour it straight into the water on the poles? Then use floating vessels to help haul machines and other bridge sections into place like lego?

      It depends on how deep the particular area is. I think there are depths that can be reached, and others that can't be. I've heard of depths that are twice as high as volcanic mountains. I doubt a bridge will be constructed in such an area. However, I'm sure somebody could figure out how to do even that.

    Where would we be without engineers and scientists. It's difficult to appreciate the sheer skill and technology that goes into building these structures. Why don't we have people like these directing the future of the world instead of corrupt politicians and greedy money-men.

    There some mistakes in the video. The video said that piles are driven until they “turn”. Battered piles are driven at very precise angles so that the top ends up in the exactly correct location in the footing.

    In Michigan we have some incredible bridges. 😎
    The Ambassador Bridge connecting Detroit and Windsor Canada is over the Detroit River had the longest suspended central span in the world when it was completed in
    1929-1,850 feet (560 m).
    The Mackinac Bridge connecting Michigan's
    Lower Peninsula to the Upper Peninsula
    and is 5-miles long.

    I just come back from fishing on the bridge battered piles, the time i was fishing and this question appear how did they made this must be difficult because i can tell the water around 20 feet deep when the tide water down and i can see pillar under the platform that we fishing from and now i know bridge engineering is marvel and appreciate bridge everytime i near it
