- Due to lack of education when she left the strict Swartzentruber settlement, Naomi slipped into exotic dancing, prost*tution, dr*gs, and almost getting m*rdered. In this episode, she opens up about her trials and tribulations with growing up Amish, her dark reality afterward, and eventually finding the light at the end of the tunnel.

Thank you Shelise for having me! I am really happy that people enjoy my story. I hope it helps to inspire others to find independence, happiness and peace even if they were raised in strict cult communities.
You have such an amazing story! I am already 2 chapters into your book and am afraid I will be up a few more hours! I can't put it down! Thank you so much for the bravery it takes to tell such a private story. It in itself is a blessing!!
Thank YOU for being so open and vulnerable! I loved hearing your perspectives and how your upbringing led you on a journey that ended in such a peaceful and happy place due to your perseverance and constant learning. ❤️ everyone go get her book! amzn.to/3Vt5I0D
Can't wait for your book to arrive Monday. You are a Shero, a Phoenix who is flying high and proud!
So excited to read your book, thank you for coming on! 🫶
As a 50 yr old Dancer with 8 yrs of college under my belt too, I feel so much of your dancing story! It's hard to get out of when you aren't used to sitting in one spot for 40-50 hrs a week for 25%of the money and co workers who are shitty and don't respect your personal foibles the way the Sisterhood/Brotherhood does! For all the problems of the adult industry world, those on the outside will never know the positive things about it, especially for .misfits and those with nowhere left to go
More women need to learn & believe that living alone is not the worst thing in the world. Or even bad. It can be truly wonderful.
It will take other people, especially women, to model this and encourage it. I loved living alone!
I agree and this applies to both sexes. I hate seeing my mates with their partners, they are miserable. I’ve had one serious relationship and plenty of dating experiences under my belt. I enjoy woman but I could do without them. I love my own company and the thought of living with anyone or having a partner makes me miserable. Relationships are two insecure individuals that use and tolerate each other for their own selfish needs and wants all for the fear of being alone. They are all toxic on some level and narcissistically controlled by one. This is not love and this is no way to live but many and most do out of fear. Relationships are full of lies, deceit and manipulative manipulation due to hate which comes from fear. Everything we do is out of fear. Relying on others for happiness is the worst miserable mistake one can make. If you cannot be happy with yourself, then you will never be happy. Attachment is suffering
Just need to say that in a way where she can understand that with examples rather than pretty words. Just saying "something is great" doesn't mean anything. Freedom to find hobbies does.
@@steelearmstrong9616 i don't think you've been going out or been around the right people mate. You sound like you need to do some self reflection and therapy.
@@steelearmstrong9616No,no man is an island,#2,extremes of anything are not good :)
I think we need halfway houses for young people leaving these groups, where they get the emotional support and financial support they need to make safe choices. They are so vulnerable it just breaks my heart.
100%!
Not a half way house, call them a shelter. Half way house implies half prison. Lol. These people just need help with money and getting settled in real life.
@@Greg3070Maybe you only know about half way houses for people out of prison but they are for anyone who is busy half transitioning back into the world. There is a huge lack of them for people who are leaving drug rehabilitation centers for example.
"There's always a light at the end of the tunnel if you choose to see it" She has no idea how inspirational that sounds.
Makes me sad that former Amish are so susceptible to exploitation and other extreme lifestyles.
This has nothing to do with being Amish. Thousands upon thousands of teenagers have run away from home and from there become prostitutes, strippers and addicted to drugs.
Getting out of addiction and 'fast' money is very hard, so huge accolades to Naomi!!!!
It's crazy how her accent has a German twinge to it, really shows how isolated her community was for so long.
Just thinking that! The FLDS have a similar unique accent, also from being so isolated
its actually dutch, most amish communites speak dutch *edit NOT dutch but Deutsch*🙄
@HeiwaTori that is not correct. It is called "dutch" sometimes but it doesnt mean Dutch, like the Netherlands, but Dutch, like in Deutsch, which is the German word for German
@@xararala well then they should say deutch... why would they call it dutch if theyre talking about deautch?? 😅
I was wondering what it was. I actually find it really interesting
I much preferred telling my children, we do it this way because… which as they grow leads to discussion of other ways to do things.
In a religious, insular community there are no questions. You don't ask questions.
@@tennillepatterson5500 because questions lead to answers and answers show the truth.
That's because children aren't reared to think & make responsible decisions. The are reared to be controlled. Very sad life I think.
This woman just raised the "cool girl" bar several rungs. I'm off to order her book.
Just knew that I would never be able to watch this whole interview... when they were wrapping up, I actually said out loud "I'm not ready for her to be finished"!! 😂 GREAT STORY!! I am going to get the book as soon as I post this. Beautiful person. Beautiful heart. I bet she would be the best mom, friend, partner, etc. not because of the hard circumstances of her upbringing, but in spite of it. 😊 God Bless dear girl.
And P.S. I have a VERY good feeling you're not going anywhere near hell! You've been there already, right?😊
Comment of the day! I couldn’t agree more ❤️🙌
"I bet she would be the best mom." Did we watch the same interview...? The level of strange, delusional encouragement this lady is getting in the comments is actually terrifying. I understand the experience from being raised Amish might have made her too trusting or gullible but God damn dude...she is being praised for leaving the Amish and going on a 15 year bender!
Always supportive of those who tell their story. Just ordered the book!
I have read all the books that have been suggested on this channel some of them have been audiobooks and all of them have been amazing I'm sure this one is going to be as amazing as well I just bought it
I’m always so impressed with the way human nature wants to find peace and joy ! And really impressed with you as a woman always believing the best in people…and that you KNEW you were worth more and found a way through. What a life!
Really great guest! I admire her being open to telling her story, and am so happy she found her way to happiness, freedom, and ultimately forgiving herself. Never plays the victim here as many would. Owns her story and shares it to help others understand and grow. I applaud you Naomi! 👏🏻👏🏻
Break the silence. Break the cycle.
Naomi you must be surrounded by angels. Wow,, you were so close to so much danger all those years and yet you survived, found peace, sobriety, love and healed with your family. It is an amazing story of survival when faced with so much adversity. Thank you for sharing! 💞💜💞
This is an excellent interview! Such a great exchange between two well-spoken women.
I agree. It was so uplifting, even when discussing the not so great parts of her life. She’s very inspiring 💞
Two thoughtful & respectful articulate women.
A large branch of my family is Amish. As someone who grew up in an awful (albeit english) home, I so understand being a girl with the best intentions & not understanding such important social rules which were invisible to me from birth.
Hoping only the best for this wonderful woman ❤
The discussion about not hugging children as they got older echos my family's experience, although it was Brethren in Christ Mennonites and not Amish. My grandma talked about her family caring deeply, but still felt unloved and never got physical affection as she aged. Even though my family is no longer affiliated with the culture, no one learned how to be affectionate in the home. I visited family of friends and was shocked by how touchy-feely they seemed to be. A lot of it is learned through osmosis.
My family was just "normal", whatever that means. We never hugged or touched each other. Going out with different women, they could tell. I would pull away when hugged. I don't think I will ever be ok with touching other people. Too old for dating now, 54. Good luck everyone!!!😊
I can totally relate what you say about affection. I grew up in the Brethren church with a background on both sides of the family being in the Amish and the German Baptists. I think that the lack of affection carried over from generation to generation and it was so unloving , painful in our household. No touching, no telling your child that you love them or encouragement and mostly just condemnation about everything. I remember when I met my first husband , I was completely shocked when he told his parents he loved them and they hugged, the hairs on my arms actually raised up because I didn't know people did this.
Thank you for sharing your story! Your will to create a good life is so admirable after so many horrible experiences. I hope you have many beautiful years ahead with the family you created. You deserve that! 💕
I loved this video! I always cheer for anyone who has overcome hardships and gone on to have such an amazing positive impact on others!❤
What an inspiring person and I agree, keep going no matter what, learn as much as you can from your mistakes and don’t let them hold you back.
This was a really great interview and I especially love the fact that her family have welcomed her back into the family because it also means her little girl gets to experience some of what she experienced growing up, without all the heavy restrictions 💓
Naomi is absolutely fascinating. Loved this interview and can’t wait to get my hands on this book!
Awesome story. Thank you for giving survivors like this a voice. ❤
What a vulnerable, honest interview. Thank you for sharing your story. I’m so glad you’ve found happiness, love, and peace. Bless you 💜
One of the most interesting interviews I've ever encountered. So inspirational as well. I've listened to many interviews (on another channel) of addicts and see how nearly impossible it is to get off crack, so I also want to send a huge congratulations to Naomi for having the strength to remove herself, do what she knew for herself she needed to do and on her sobriety. It's wonderful to hear her speak about her happiness now and how incredibly wonderful it is too that she has a loving, close relationship with her family.
I’m ordering that book👀 Great interview! I am so happy for her🎉 I am so proud of the platform ❤
This was an absolutely engaging interview! Cannot wait to read Naomi’s book. ❤
One of the best interviews to date IMO. What a story!
Although the liberation the first night at the strip club was a very bittersweet story. She was still being used, she was pushed into the decision, I can hardly see that as a victory, even if it lead to good things for her.
Wow! All of these stories amaze me to see how people can survive such horrific and traumatic situations!
What an amazing inspiring memoir. Thank you to you both.❤
This story is wild! At the start it sounds so far fetched but as you explain how you were guided by other people taking advantage of you it makes so much sense knowing that you craved empowerment and love. This is an absolutely incredible story thank you for sharing
What an incredible life Naomi has lead! She is a wonderful storyteller, and It is wonderful to see how happy and content she is now.
I cannot stress enough. You are not responsible for what happens to you when you're vulnerable. You were so young and had no idea how things worked "on the outside". Such a strong amazing woman. Thank you for sharing 💛 a good friend is all most of us need to nudge us a little.
On a side note my MIL likes those over romantic Amish novels..... I should slip Naomis book into her stack. 😂
Thanks for another great interview, I hope she continues to prosper.
So glad you were able to escape so many incredible challenges! Amazing strength that you were able to find your own sovereignty to do so
*Naomi* WHAT A STORY, you have lived a million lives in one! 😹
Empowerment is beautiful and opens so many avenues, you are living proof of that. Hearing the story of you reclaiming your identity gives me so much hope for the future of others leaving a similar situation. 🖤 && CONGRATS ON YOUR SOBRIETY GIRLIE!!! ✨🫶
~Much love and support as always! 🖤
Starting listening while making a Saturday am breakfast for the family. This turned into us all watching together and talking about Naomi’s story. Ty Ms Naomi for sharing your story. My copy of her book 📖 is arriving on Monday 3/25. Can’t wait
Love that!
I ordered the book before the interview ended! Great story and I look forward to reading your book.
Wow, your amazing Naomi and strong. Thanks for sharing.
❤
This was my fave interview so far!! And I've wstched most of them. I listened whilst deep cleaning my floors. I had goosebumps. Ill relisten later and take notes because I was commenting out loud listening to it. I wanted to post a comment so badly but didn't trust my ADHD
Thank you Shelise for this podcast. Thank you Naomi for sharing your story. I just purchased the Kindle version of your book. You are beautiful and strong. I am happy that you are thriving. May life always treat you kindly.
Fascinating story! Great conversation! ❤
Thanks for sharing Naomi. ❤
Very interesting interview! Sounds like she didn't suffer much directly in her high-control group (for a change!) she was just kept ignorant of things that might (or might not) have helped her cope with real life later. A brave and resourceful person for sure!
Phew! What an interview. Kind of unbelievable, however I appreciate her honesty and courage.
Thank you so much Naomi. You are a strong woman.❤
Such an inspirational young woman! Thanks Naomi! ❤
This lady is truly inspirational. She's been through so much but she never let the world crush her spirit or make her into a cynical and miserable person. She shines.
Wow! What a story! I love happy endings like yours!!
Such an incredibly inspiring & very interesting story. I was hooked! I'll have to get your book. Naomi, you should be so very proud of how far you've come and you did it by standing on your own feet! Best wishes to you. Such an inspiration!
Thank you for your kind words!❤️
Oh my! But given what I’ve learned about the Schwartzentrauber denomination I can’t say I’m surprised.
What a story, what a wreck religion makes of so many people’s lives.
I didn't mean to forget you Shalese! Such a great interview here. You did an amazing job!
Glad you enjoyed it!😊❤️
what a beautiful story. Thank you for sharing.
Awesome stiry!!!
After hearing the lack of affevtion at a young age...
Me thinking of my 11 year old plopping on my lap casually yesterday, to give me a quick hug and "I love you", and thinking how this isn't going to last much longer 😢
Grateful because I also wasn't raised in an affectionate family, but broke that cycle with my kids.
She's been through so much! What a life story! She's amazing!
love you! and all of your guests!
Thank you, Naomi for sharing your experiences and story! It’s very inspiring and I appreciate you taking the time and effort to share your world with us! ❤❤❤
I will be looking forward to reading your book and sharing it with my daughters!
Thank you for sharing your story! ❤
Great job on improving your life, Naomi!
What a wonderfully delightful woman! Thank you Naomi for sharing your story
Thank you for this! I too had an ambivalent relationship with sex work much of the time, while there were also significant highs and lows. I am a survivor of intimate partner violence . We come from grooming and it makes sense that we ended up with crap heap boyfriends who got us to tolerate awful things by locating our vulnerabilities from childhood and exploiting that. It also makes sense that we healed and adapted away from that, because we can and do. I enjoyed this. Big loves.
Naomi! You’re a beautiful soul! So happy you’re loving your life!
what an incredible story. Now i need this book!
She is amazing I'm going to read that book congratulations on your sobriety you rock
As always thanks to all behind this channel for helping people to share their stories. 😊
Thank you for your appreciation!❤️
Amazing video. Very positive.
I am so proud of her and everything she conquered to be where she is today ! What a journey !
When I was young, my mom gave me some books about menstruation to read and learn from (she was embarrassed to talk about it, but at least she gave me info; she learned about it from her classmates, not her mom). Anyway, I distinctly remember this one section from the FAQ section. The question was if it was okay to dance, and the answer said, Go ahead and dance-with a drawing of a couple doing a nice slow dance-but not like this-with another drawing of a couple doing some really acrobatic dance with the woman being thrown up in the air or something. And now I think of my life and how being on my period never slowed me down (I almost never had bad cramps, thankfully), and I think this lady’s experience of not being allowed to go barefoot or work hard was based on old fashioned notions that have no real basis in reality.
So interesting! Thank you
Yeah the rules she was given no bare feet etc, my granny learned those, she was born just before WW2. Its all ridiculous, you can do pretty much anything you do normally while on your period
When my mom was about sixteen one day while in the bathroom she put on some red lipstick She heard her mom coming so she quickly wiped it off and threw the tissue in the toilet and scurried out Grandma goes into the bathroom and sees the tissue with red and thinks my mom had started her period Grandma call moms older sister into the bathroom hands her a pad and belt and told her to tell her sister to wear this iAbout a week goes by and my mom who had fatefully wore the pad asked her sister “how long do I have to wear this?” My aunt said “until the bleeding stops” My mom asked “What bleeding?” That was about 1947 Not only did my grandma fail my mom so did my aunt ! Hugs and love to all the females that have had to learn the hard way
I grew up with running cold water and using an outhouse until i graduated in 1976. Also took a bath using a tin tub behind the wood stove in the winter. In the summer we used the sun to heat bathwater and bathed out side. Then between Wednesday and Sunday when we took a bath we took "spit bathes" which we got a heated pan of water and washed and rinsed out bodies. I can so relate to this lifestyle
I related so much to this! And so many insights into my sexual trauma. Thank you!!!
This one was so good. I think the ending that Naomi has a relationship with her family still. So many people leaving these high demand religious groups are completely shunned.
What an amazing podcast. My family has Amish roots, and I also danced at cheetahs Hollywood 😍😍
It shows how much restricting children like this often makes them run to the other extreme, obviously she was groomed as well but a huge part of that was just never learning to say no or what boundaries were. I liked was it Danielle from children of god saying she never tells her daughter because we say so, there always has to be a reason
her community that raised left her so vulnerable to predators.
@@laurengin4581And its the same in so many of these cults, hilariously usually in the name of protecting the children especially girls. Obviously don't let kids run wild, but teach a healthy relationship and boundaries around things like sex or alcohol.
I certainly hope Naomi comes to a place in her life where she does not blame herself for the sexual assaults she endured as a young woman. What a ridiculous way to raise children - not giving them any information does not make them compliant, it makes them confused and more likely to struggle with making any decision. Thank you both for doing this interview - just think of the women you are saving and /or making feel much less guilty about decision they have made in life. So happy Naomi has found happiness in her life and I love that she mentioned how she cuddles her young daughter!! You can break the cycle!!
Good morning! Omg, I've never been here this early before
Wooo! 🥳
I am definitely buying this book
This reminds me so much of the Mennonite. I grew up in an area where there were quite a bit of mennonites.... there was a town like 10 (maybe less) miles away that was an entire community. Like it was a given that you didnt live in that town if you werent part of their group and these people had their own school. All the rest of these towns are small and we all went to a single middle/high school together(except the town that has their own school). I had a good friend who was mennonite that came to our school. They wore hand made dresses to school and in 8th grade she had to drop out. Their family wasnt in that town nor were they as strict as others but they were still very traditional. Somehow her younger sister fought for her right to keep attending school and went on to college and everything! I was super proud of her!
This story is insane!
Shelise thank you so much for giving clarification on polyamoury! I feel like there are so many out there claiming polyamoury but treating it like that man in California. So many out there who say that so they can have an excuse to sleep with whoever they want whenever they want regardless of how their partner may feel about it. ❤
Only a few minutes in, but sounds like how my dad grew up during the depression. They were Quakers but no weird stuff happened. Just farmed, no plumbing or electricity. Had a water pump, an outhouse and a little thing built underground for food storage. It looked like a little house and had a roof on it. Our dad took us there to see the farm when we were younger. That was probably 40 years ago when we went.
Love it!
What an amazing woman. I hate that she was taken advantage of. I’m so grateful to hear her talk about her family being happy though. The siblings seemed to show love even though the parents really didn’t.
Naomi, it broke my heart to hear you blame yourself for that man taking advantage of you. It was in no way your fault. You're young, vulnerable, and naive. You can say "I should've done this" or "I should've done that" but these are all hindsight and with so much more education and experience. It was never your fault that this man was so slimy and scummy that he used you in this situation. The fact that you got out of it should be what you focus on.
And this goes for anyone who has been in a similar situation. It's not your fault.
Difficult beginning lead to Happy Every After Moments ❤
I'm from the "free love" generation and you have me blushing
I MUST READ THIS BOOK.
You must
Would you think about making your book into an audiobook to make it more accessible to us visually impaired folks?
Consent is key always.
I agree! but I think I would add... INFORMED consent! people say yes to things, sometimes out of fear or ignorance... but if we are making INFOMRED decisions, those are the best!
I have that problem being a good person sucks some times seeing the best on people gets you screwed over
That’s crazy… I live in MN, grew up here, and kno exactly the club she was at and who she was dealing with. Iv never thought highly of these places but never thought they would take advantage of someone like that.
i love it when dude goes to the fridge
Yea...He didn't care😂
Wow! Such an inspiring story- but also made me angry for her. The juxtaposition of the element of coercion present in most of her sexual encounters with the way they sometimes end up being empowering-inspires because the anger I feel about the coercion is assuaged by feeling impressed with her ability to get herself out of a situation once she realizes that it’s harming her.
I live in lancaster County PA. All the amish have refrigerators and freezers. Some of them run off gas or solar panels. They all have indoor plumbing.
good to know the uncle is here in Canada wonder where he is now.. and what he's done !!
I'm sure he carried on his raping ways
And some poor woman married him!
It was wild to hear that she was so close to where I lived growing up. Also with Chelsie talking about how she took a pole dance class and ended up with bruises and stuff at the studio I learned pole dancing at we called them pole kisses.
Covering your hair/face/body is mid-eastern carryover, part practical appliication for safety +skin sun damage cancer, etc:)
Naomi seems very nice. Although, I’d point out that her story is not much different from that of any teenager who runs away from home. I don’t see how her lifestyle choices were the fault of her Amish community and I feel very sorry for what her parents (and family) must have gone through.
I watch the whole video and am glad that i did, but a small remark: the screen of your guest reflected in her glasses. Unfortunately it has kept me busy a lot of de time 😕. Next time better 🌹.
That is the funniest book cover I’ve ever seen she has went from very modest to the very opposite that’s wild lol sad story and way to live but very interesting lol prayers for her or the opposite but healing for sure lol
You look radiant today !
