@@thehighllama8101It probably had something to do with American DJ’s blacklisting them at the time. By ‘69 the Beach Boys had really fallen out of favor with the boomer hippie elite in America, and they were the ones buying most of the records that year. After their no show at Monterrey Pop in ‘67 and failure to deliver on the promise of the then-unreleased SMiLE album, they were labeled ‘uncool’ and cast out of the inner circle. It just so happened that they released some of their best material during that whole period of ‘68 through ‘71, and that includes this song, but only the diehards were paying attention in America. The UK was a very different story. They were still huge over there. Bigger than the Beatles even.

Madeline H. It's not all Carl. He sings lead on most of the 1st verse, while Brian sings the end of the 1st verse: "that very same love that passed me by, and that is why...". Al sings lead in the choruses, Carl sings all of the 2nd verse, Mike sings lead on the bridge "found out it was in my head" with Brian sing the "baby baby" part underneath. During the end tag, Carl sings the"jump for joy" part, while all 6 of the guys harmonize. Listen closely, as Brian sings the high parts in the harmonies.

Well, there’s a bit more to it than that. Keep in mind that at the exact same time they’d fallen out of favor here in the states, they were still the number one biggest band in the UK. Even bigger than the Beatles in ‘69. The reason they’d been written off here was because of two things: one being their big no show at the Monterrey Pop Festival in ‘67, and two was their failure to deliver the much hyped, much anticipated SMiLE album. It really put them at odds with the American hippie elite, who at that time were either going for the whole country rock thing like the Byrds and the Band, or they were going for heavy acid rock. The Beach Boys were neither of those things, though they were still cranking out great new music and albums. American DJ’s had been informed that the BB’s were ‘uncool’, and told not to play the new records. Then Murry went and sold off all their publishing rights around the same time.
