- Gen Con, Essen Spiel, Pax, these are all big game conventions that have crowds of people coming to playtest, buy and explore the newest and hottest games by some of the biggest and smallest indie publishers. In this video I talk about my first experiences at a game convention right here in Australia.

Have you ever been to a game convention? What have your experiences been? This was my first time ever visiting a game convention here in Australia.
If you haven't been to a convention before? What are your thoughts on what you would do at your first one?

Conventions are great moments.. I was in « Paris est ludique » and « Parthenay » this year. My next step should be « Cannes ». It’s a pleasure to discover PAX in your vidéo 😉😊
It is beautiful that you had the chance to enjoy a convention. I had the opportunity to attend my first Gencon this year and had a similar feeling to yours. I even met a game designer and only recognized who he was once, he introduced himself. I hope you continue and grow in your love of this hobby as I have. Cheers

It was such a nice surprise to meet you at Devcon! I actually assumed you must be a seasoned pro at conventions... 😂 I'm really looking forward to Play-Con in July 2024 in Sydney. It's the first national con being organised by Board Game BBQ. They have hosted so many great local game days and been super supportive of local designers.

So glad you got to attend a board game convention and had such a wonderful experience! My wife and I went to our first board game convention last December, Pax Unplugged in Philadelphia, and we're going to it again this year. So much fun, and it's great to see so many other people who love board games as much as I do.
I have never been to a convention. I bought a ticket to Pax once. Out here in Boston, MA USA we have Pax East. But my chorus always kept me crazy that weekend every year with performances and tech rehearsals. I did not end up using my ticket sadly. I will try again in the future. I get claustrophobic in large crowds. And the noise level is difficult with my autism sensory issues at times. Like I avoid Amusement parks in July and go in the off season.
Yes, my hubby would agree with you. He only stayed for part of the day cause of the crowds. He wore noise cancelling headphones which helped! I hope you get to experience one soon

Glad you enjoyed devcon, it’s one of the few places where we all get to catch up with each other after chatting in discord & in the Facebook group all year.
Will you be at CanCon in Canberra in January? A lot of us devs get a ticket to the games library & playtest our games in there as well.

Hi Danny, I remember seeing you a couple of times at Pax and thinking you looked soo familiar but couldn’t remember where I had seen you😅. Im so happy that you got to experience the magic of Pax. I feel so at home when Im at the tabletop area 😊.
This year (3rd Pax), my partner and I caught the bus from Syd to Melb so that we can have 40 kilos of luggage allowance per person. We checked in an empty luggage bag at the Pax cloakroom to stash merch and board games then took that back to the hotel before 6pm. I think this system worked really well especially on the Friday because it was alot quieter.
At the end of it, we had two wheeled luggage bags full of board games and merch. Our clothes were stashed in our hiking bags instead 😂 but yea alot less back pain and exhaustion this year.

I went to my first con and it happened to be Essen! We went for two days and I enjoyed it. A ton of people and tons of games. A bit overwhelming but still fun. I got to try out six games which was fun.
That is such a great convention to go to as a first convention! I would have been amazing! Thanks for sharing your experience :)
Have you tried PWH's Monolyth? 3D polyomino with races to the highest value point prizes a la Earth and wagers places on completed sides of your finished structure.
