he is out "HOKA ONE ONE So we’ve checked in with some good friends in the Colorado town of Silverton. Through around 120km and 2 hours ahead of record pace, Jim’s food intake could not keep up with his output. Remote back country at altitude is no place to be sick solo so that’s the end of an incredible adventure for today. It felt electric to cheer a 100-mile race against time again. Thank you Jim. Recover well, champion."
Is interesting and similar to whats been going on here in the UK with the Penine Way (The Spine Race route). John Kelly broke the old record last week and currently Damian Hall is half way through his attempt running it in the opposite direction.
There's nothing to lose in an FKT attempt, making the race record time substantially more valuable. If anything, Jim's time will give him/others some help in pacing next year
quite interesting and really shows the difference between CR and FKT - Kilian was playing and waiting for the other front runners for most of his CR run - mostly just looking like he was enjoying the mountains - so we dont really know how fast he could go - going FKT is more like a time trail - no others to distract you, perfect pacing and supply options - so you cant really compare the two - JW made a good effort - but also shows his limits at high vert races - but deffinitely an interesting event
Wow, I have been waiting to see what Jim will do a a hard rock type of course. Being in Georgia I would love to see him at Cruel Jewel 100. But can’t wait to hear his time. Even not listed as a official time, All other runners will know it’s the time to beat
Awesome video as always, great to see a new video up on your channel. I think Jim if he goes supported will put down a 21:15 Your channel is always so inspiring, for me to even create my own for my community around here in the midwest. Keep up all the great and inspiring work you do.!!👊👊👊👊
Maybe it would be cool to have an asynchronous race somewhere. Have an expert race director provide a lovely route, for which everyone is invited to submit a personal best. Given 3 months, that would provide a lot of opportunity for a lot of people to try it. Especially if there is something to win. Browsing through FKT, there seem to be a lot of routes that only very few people ever submitted a time for - that doesn't really provide a lot of competition. And if amateurs are far from the FKT, they have no reason to submit their PB (which would still be cool to see on the website, as a community). In a race, everyone has a good reason to submit a time.
The FKT allows you to do a lot of things you couldn't in the race, like running with pacers (that can also carry your supplies), as many checkpoints as you like, etc. so very much a different category to the race record IMO. Would love to see him attempt it unsupported though!
Really great video! I think FKT and fastest race times have to be equally respectable due to the fact that conditions like markings and aid are different, but some of the major races are intentionally run at specific times of year to make the environmental conditions harder, so innately running at a time without those environmental aspects times will be faster, but this doesn't mean one is better than the other.
I dunno - I think a race generally sets things up to be run faster - the competition aspect against others is missing from an FKT, which requires more self motivation. Though Jim is generally running by himself out front ;)
Jim (14:30:04) beat Francois (15:54:53) heads-up at WSER 2018. Conversely, Francois beat him at UTMB 2017 (19:01:32 to 20:11:38). Not sure if they have other head-to-head results. Kilian finished ahead of Jim in that 2017 UTMB as well (19:16:59). I don't think they have any other H2H events where they both finished.
@@chrisworden2774 Killian and Jim both DNF'd at 2018 UTMB. The most recent race was at Sierre-Zinal 2019 with Killian winning/setting a course record (2:25:35) and Jim finishing 3rd (2:31:52)
Any year's winning time, event record, and course record. Even tho they are all on the exact same course, i don't perceive those efforts as being the same thing. All three efforts (plus myriad other efforts; such as age group records} get my respect.
I know several people have raced/ran courses outside of race day(there's videos on here about it), maybe they couldn't be there on race day but still wanted to do the course, they probably just don't have to notoriety so that's why it seems like a novel idea, but it's not.
Given that, as you pointed out, he'll be running without aid stations and on an unmarked course (so self-navigating), his effort would be sufficiently different from the Hardrock itself as to not invalidate any actual race records. Just as Kipchoge's 1:59:40 doesn't best his own 2:01:39 marathon record. Walmsley putting up a faster time than Jason or Kilian would be more impressive, given the lack of support; but it wouldn't be an apples-to-apples comparison. In my opinion, anyway.
My guess for his attempt: 21:41. Some type of video documentation (possibly at most "major" aid stations used in the Hardrock 100) will greatly increase the validity of this run. If there is anyone who could do this FKT, it's Jim.
Interesting indeed. In the ongoing Walmsley-Jornet debate, I always saw Jim as faster on less technical trails, but Jornet being better on more technical trails. I look forward to see how he’ll fare, and possibly get proven wrong.
Same thoughts as with strongman in recent times: is it really a course/ world record if not in a “competition setting”? I guess it can be an FKT but if others don’t have the opportunity not sure it can be counted as a course record
Just an awesome idea. Who cares if it’s official? Who cares if he made it? For an athlete of her caliber to “waste” time and energy just for “funsies” speaks volumes about how he feels about the sport. Respect Jim!
I like the concept and I like it especially as a response to the pandemic and the convoluted (and often unfair) entry schemes employed by events to cherry-pick their fields. RD's need to come up with more democratic means of selecting their field or they will be faced with asterisks on everything! I think this is a great evolutionary response to a rigged system.
Any FKT is admirable. But I don't see the neccessity to put the asterisks to course records. In a race, you have the rules (like where to take a sip of water from your crew, speaking of Hardrock) and other limitations - like the strict day of the race, regardless your optimal fitness or the weather conditions. To me, it's a different sport.
breaking 14 would be impossible - Kilian is an equal, if not better mountain runner, so for JW just to challenge him he would have to have a perfect day (which he didnt and thus stopped)
Looks like he's about 90 minutes up on Kilian's course record through 70 miles. Regardless, in a head to head mountain race between Kilian and Jim, my money would be on Kilian every time.
Running solo is not running with the European runners👀. He is an amazing and the fastest trail runner in the world, however, what happened in the UTMB?? Is he training for the UTMB 2021?😜🔪🔥
He is the fastest flat course trail runner in the world probably - on more technical, vertical, Francois, Kilian Xavier and others are ahead of him still
I really don't think there would be an asterisk. Would be a cool "Didya know.." but the race CR is still the CR. There have been a ton of people unofficially running courses this year. Hope someone comments if any of them had beat official times.
So now that he blew up ( again) what is your take Jamil ? Personnally I don't care about fkt but so disappointed he gave up on finishing the loop ! Throwing up leaves the option to use fat and keep moving forward. There is no additional risk, put a jacket and keep walking. That's just how alpinist climb summits! This "moon or nothing approach is just too egotic and untrue to the ultra trail to not be called out. An humble and late Finnisher is what we all are, id it worthless to God Jim ? Kilian made the loop with a dislocated shoulder and I guess he does not count the throwup. That is true mountain spirit. After all these expériences Jim remains really just a runner looking for fame.

Every time I hear that intro music I feel like it's a bit like Christmas.
Thanks for all your hard work
My thoughts go out to Tommy as he battles.
Oh man, this is insane. Just getting into trail running and what these guys are doing is just next level. 🤯
Dude get up there and film it!!
YES!
Agree
Walmsley’s solo Hard Rock record attempt with no course markings.....hope he remembers to TURN LEFT!!!
Ouch that was almost to far.
Love his idea. Pau Capell is trying to break his own UTMB course record end of August this year as an supported FKT attempt.
Prayers to Tommy Rivers and His family
Love the unscripted Jam Jam!
My prayers to Tommy and his family.
Prayers going out to Tommy for the strength to recover.
Great to see you back again Jam Jam, keep it coming. Miss your stuff. I hope someone will keep us update on Jim
I was just "thinking" - it's been a while since Jamil posted anything! Glad to see you posting.

So good to see you JamJam!
Good to see you back mate
Jamil, can't wait to see the "chasing Walmsley" edition of this FKT. Seriously though, you produce my favorite running content on RUclips. Thank you.
Wish I was there to film it!
Nice to see you posting videos. Jim runs 19 hours and 58 minutes.

Do a vid on your favorite running shoes, or what you eat in a day on long workouts

I’d like to see JW beat Kilian or Francois in a race, not a solo FKT. That’s the asterisk JW has, not the other way around.
Jim (14:30:04) beat Francois (15:54:53) heads-up at WSER 2018. Conversely, Francois beat him at UTMB 2017 (19:01:32 to 20:11:38). Not sure if they have other head-to-head results. I think Walmsley will crush it in 20 hours even! Also, I love that Frozen Head shirt!!!
I’ll be looking for him on Hwy 49

19 hr 55 min. Go Jim!

Man I would love to see a Run Steep Get High documentary of this run. Any chance of that happening? Would you be permitted to travel?
My guess for his attempt: 21:41. Some type of video documentation (possibly at most "major" aid stations used in the Hardrock 100) will greatly increase the validity of this run. If there is anyone who could do this FKT, it's Jim.
Great to see you back on Jamil! I totally think Jim is capable of going under 20 but I will be conservative and give him a 20:16.
He’ll run goal time or DNF. That’s how the Walmsley story goes.
Looking forward to Hardrock 2021! Third times a charm...right?
I heard something about Jim FKT attempt and Garmin under maintenance. But I don't remember what it was.
Interesting indeed. In the ongoing Walmsley-Jornet debate, I always saw Jim as faster on less technical trails, but Jornet being better on more technical trails. I look forward to see how he’ll fare, and possibly get proven wrong.

Pretty sick!
Glad we are only sending "thoughts" that way nobody could possibly be offended by prayers. We wouldn't want to risk someone praying for a sick man.
The one that starts at Sqauw Valley is only for the race day. The wild river changes make it too dangerous.
I keep checking for that goat shirt.

21:21 - hope he breaks the record!
Would love to see Jim break the FKT solo. Not sure if he plans to use pacers/support, but if he can pull it off without those elements it'd be amazing
Any word on this? It seemed his GPS tracker stopped right around the Garmin outage hit...
I heard he was aiming to break 14. But I think he will do it in more like 19:41.
breaking 14 would be impossible - Kilian is an equal, if not better mountain runner, so for JW just to challenge him he would have to have a perfect day (which he didnt and thus stopped)
21-22 If I'm correct I want a bunch of free Run Steep Shizzle
you did see my comment right? he stopped
What's the difference between FKT and course record?
The interesting thing about the FKT is you can have a pacer the entire way and have as much aid as possible.
21:00!
Looks like he's about 90 minutes up on Kilian's course record through 70 miles. Regardless, in a head to head mountain race between Kilian and Jim, my money would be on Kilian every time.
Does solo mean unsupported?
What is FKT?
Fastest known time
@@mccracken679 Thank you!
20:42. Closest guess gets a hat?
He dropped at mile 70 😓
What kind of thoughts?
20:20:22
19:47:13
20:51
I say he runs 21:30.
He either crushes the record, or puke is gut out - nothing in between. Go hard or go home!
21:10
Sub 23hrs due to lack of course markings etc

I estimate 19 hours 57 minutes
My time guess for Jim is 21 hours 48 minutes
He will probably turn left when he needs to turn right
I think he will finish in 22 hours
I think he'll run 21.07
No way he is running 3 hours faster than Kilian..🤣
Wouldn’t surprise me honestly.
