Not gonna lie, this game ate up almost a decade of my life. I first played it in 2011 back in the OG Planet Version, solely because I saw Ragna and Hazama from Blazblue were in it. My experience of it back then was similar to yours, I would play it here and there but it didn't pull me in. Hell, when OGP LS closed down and Wemade took over, I only played for about a week and then quit.
When Z8LS took over later that year (2013) though... I saw that they were giving away a Hero Package if you logged in on Christmas day. Those are a big deal because they let you pick any normal hero Permanent and fully customize it. So I thought, sure I'll give the game a shot again.
That's when it happened. I coincidentally chose the latest hero they had added to the game, Hero no. 85, Destroyer. I fell in love. It was so fucking fun to play. She, was so fucking fun to play. People hate fighting destroyer since they have so much air time and can very easily faint people, but man... flying in the sky with her is a feeling that will never leave me. I can still feel it in my bones.
Destroyer has a 100 meter bar that slowly fills up when you aren't attacking, dashing, or blocking. If you hold D (the attack button) you enter flight mode where your meter rapidly decreases, but you can spam your gun and hitting just two shots consecutively will "faint" the target, a status that leaves them vulnerable to be attacked or combo'd. Here's the thing though, you could jump cancel your flight mode immediately after activating it. If you were to just fly without jump cancelling then your 100 meter would be used up within seconds. But if you really got the timing down and constantly jump cancelled while weaving shots in-between those jump cancels... You'd be a menace. I. I was a menace.
On surface level Destroyer didn't look that complex but then there was tech (like the jump cancel I just mentioned) that opened up so many more things you could do. And it wasn't just Destroyer that was like that, most of the roster had their own unique playstyles.
Jumper was a hero many slept on, but I enjoyed playing. On the surface level he seems like a simple enough fist fighter with some grabs and teleports you can weave into his combo. But, you could dash cancel his basic string up to the 3rd hit, and if you launched your enemy your basic string would up to your 3rd hit would keep them launched. So, if you got good at dash cancelling Jumpers basic string, you could add an extra 3 or so loops to any combo that started with a launcher. One two three, one two three, one two three, one two three four.
There is actually a really good video showcasing Jumpers dash cancel called "Jumper VS Vampire", and it also perfectly showcases skill vs. item dependency which was a major point of contempt for a lot of people. The Jumper in that video perfectly plays his character meanwhile the Vampire he fights is like one of the many garbage item reliant Vampires that tainted the meta for a very long time.
I could talk about so many more heroes, because by the end of its life, NALS (North American Lost Saga) had over 100. KLS (Korean Lost Saga) is over 200 last I checked. Not counting a select few that were just re-worked re-releases of older heroes (R-Medic, R-Ice Mage, R-Tao Warrior), the rest of the roster has their own unique movesets.
It doesn't even end there though, because each character has their own unique set of Gear on top of that. Each piece of gear in the game has its own unique skill tied to it. Gear is broken into 4 slots that every character has one of: Weapon, Armor, Helmet, Trinket.
Ant it doesn't end there either! Excluding the Weapon slot, you could mix and match and equip any armor helmet or trinket on any hero so long as you owned that gear. AND IT DOESN'T. END. THERE. EITHER!
Almost every gear in the game could be "Gear Designed". Basically, with an item called a gear designer you could download the texture of a gear, edit it in your art program of choice, and then upload it. The customization in that regard was nigh limitless. Some would cosplay things they liked (seen my fair share of anime cosplays over the years), some would make their own designs (like me), and some would just slap random textures onto random gear and sometimes it would actually look good.
The game had so much potential man, and it hurts me deep in my heart that its gone, and that potential was allowed to just... waste away.
I could go on and on, and on and on... The Korean developers hated us and saw Americans as sentient wallets instead of players that loved their game, the IMMENSELY OVER POWERED category of heroes called "Unique's" that were the main force that drove many players away from the game, the piss poor service given by the developers and publishers that deteriorated to basically nothing by its final year, etc etc, the stupid player driven drama that rivaled petty highschool gossip bullshit, etc etc...
I could make this comment 10 times as long and still not impart all of my time and experience with this game. But, I'll end it with this. What drove me to love this game and sink in way too much time from 2013 to 2019, was that I had found my main. It's just like any fighting game in that regard, if you don't find a character in the roster that resonates with you, you won't get into the game that much. But, if you find that character that feels just right... then you learn by playing that character. You get better, and better, and better. You then by proxy learn what other characters do and their playstyles by fighting them. Then who knows, you might find another character you'd like to play too.
It's that fighting game loop, but times 100, give or take. Gigantic roster, gigantic catalogue of items you can mix and match with. Gigantic potential. All gone, over some Korean developers greed. If they actually, actually, just actually gave the game a shot... man that game could still be around. What a fucking shame.

I only knew about Lost Saga because of my older brothers and their friends, but this game has left such a huge mark on me that I will never forget it. It's style is one of the reasons I decided to become an artist, and not a day goes by where I wish it, and a lot of other niche games I played back then, were playable today with thriving fanbases, because their ideas were so unique.
IIRC, my brothers and their friends were a part of a top guild on OGPlanet Lost Saga called SkyFire. I can't remember if they were the ones who owned it, or if they were just some of the top players in the guild, but just having that memory to look back on is amazing to me.

I think what killed lost saga was the latency problems making half heroes almost unplayable since you couldn't pull off their combos, otherwise the concept was great and even though it would never be as popular as the mainstream fighting/brawler mmos it would still have a dedicated community to pull through for many years like in Korea which i think its still online.

I played lost saga for quite some time. I feel it died when characters became op, combo loops last forever unless you have the pay2win item that counters it. You could further do infinite combos due to swapping between heroes with mixed item pieces. If the game kept you with one character where you could customize item sets then i think it would have been more fun imo. Just the infinite combos and loops didnt feel fun unless you had the pay2win items.

    • @triopsate3
      @triopsate3 2 года назад

Getting equipment was never really that difficult in lost saga though, it was more of the heroes that you needed to buy since golden gear chests and legendary gear chests were surprisingly common and easily obtainable for the most part. It was the character limit as well as permanent heroes that were a lot harder to obtain.

Korea has always had this p2w problem. Look at Elsword as well, you literally can't play the game unless you whale your soul out these days. They made fun games in the past but always got extremely carried away with trying to exploit their playerbase for as much money as possible which generally just ends up killing games. It's a real shame. I would absolutely love to play either of these games again if they got rebooted with more reasonable monetization schemes.

It was one of the few games I enjoyed when I was a kid because it wasn’t just click-to-attack MMO. My parents didn’t allow me any games that costed money so free PC games were the best that I could get. I was there since OGPlanet and that publisher was honestly the best time to be a player as I vaguely remember there being an actually storyline to follow and tons of other players that you could just jump into a room and be playing within seconds. Also, there weren’t a lot of power-crept heroes that enable limitless combos that does not let the opponent recover for a second, especially those “Unique” heroes that you had to get lucky to have as they aren’t available in shop.

Lost saga was one of the games I can never forget. Its that one game that I love, and sure I want my friends. Well, I barely had friends to begin with. My friends back in the day miss - treated me. Kid - me enjoyed a lot for the game for what I've experienced. And it helped me cope a lot for my depression from my family that used to miss - treat me, and even abused me at one point in life until they became better because of the new era we live in. But like seriously, lost saga helped me a lot. If it weren't for this game, I'd probably have the most shittiest childhood.
I've spent a LOT of money in lost saga, its just insanely high. I've saved all of my money for Kyo or Sol Basguy and Flash rare characters.
I've roleplayed a lot in lost saga, and its that game I enjoyed my art skills as a kid before because I skinned my characters to look like Goku or Spider - Man. It's seriously a game i can never forget
The pvp, the socializing, the roleplay, and just everything about this game. It brought the kid in me. I remembered the 2d pvp tournaments and the ranked battles and how much I've worked on combos just to get good at them. Just like Rumble Fighter, Lost Saga was that one game I religiously played.
It got me into Blazblue, and then other games like Persona, thanks to BBTAG. It's a connection of rosters I'll never forget. Thank you Lost Saga, for everything. I WOULD KILL to turn back time just to relive those memories again. Lost saga is my childhood. It's my coping skills because I was always depressed from family to friends. I stopped playing it when I hit 8th grade later on, and high school. I wanted to get back into it, since I'm 19 years old now but it's gone. I'm sorry for leaving you Lost Saga, I wish I can relive those memories again, maybe someday. For now, take care Lost Saga, and thank you for the memories!
I really wished I took my friends more seriously about those contacts too! I really did. Unfortunately, as time moves on, we evolve. I hope we all became good, and moral human beings. I believe in them like I do to the people I love. I hope they live a good life, and so will I. I'll believe in myself too for the future, and I hope one day me, and Lost Saga can once be re - united like old times.

Played quite a bit of lost saga. Had a high level hook back in the days of OGP and got pretty high up in the ladder with it and the classic hook bomb -> Hazama armor for high damage + fall damage never got old until they changed hook and made it so his bombs could no longer damage himself which stopped the combo entirely.
Very fond memories of the game and frankly was absolutely looking forward to having papaya play re-releasing the game and was majorly disappointed by the announcement at the last second.
As for whether lost saga could be an e-sports game, a team match format might be possible as an e-sport but a 1v1 would just be whoever could combo off first since combos that 100-0 people with little or no escape are just really common with many input characters having infinites on their base kit (ie: Iori had the infamous ground fire -> grab spin infinite)

From my pov of what killed lost saga was op unique characters like jin btw I owned him and others also so….but that was when it downwards slope began, I noticed people started to leave. Simply it became to much who spent x money and enhancement/upgrades(like mental abuse cause you would get infinites combo’d )…… OG LOST SAGA at it’s core was a pure fun combo/swapping game not deep pocket, non newb friendly mental abuse lmaoo.

As an Asian I should mention that Lost Saga is still playable and holds quite a significant number (although not nearly as large) of playerbase here. The game is still up and running and so far with my own experience there's never a time where the servers are quiet and there's only 10-30 people playing.

I was introduced to Lost Saga Indonesia by my classmates. Such a unique and fun fighting game. I loved the combo-swapping mechanics and seeing the male and female designs of the same hero. Eventually, the Gemscool server shut down, and was eventually rebooted into indonesian Lost Saga Origin. Coming back to it... gotta say, I'm not as into it as before. What made the game so unique was thrown out the window. Broken heroes and skills completely made your playing skill void. Newer heroes made older heroes obsolete. The pay2win aspect become increasingly evident. It sucks. Every single match was filled with the same kinds of heroes. It became repetitive. And I may be mistaken on this, but the newer heroes don't have both male and female artworks now.
Though despite all that, this game will have a special place in my heart. Maybe some day, there can be a new game that evolves this concept.

I think Lost Saga would be a huge hit for esports if it were narrowed down with some of the content in the very beginning. Under a new publisher it would need to be revisited again as a fresh new game. Once everyone is on board than we can release new characters and content little by little. This could also have a potential of releasing a battle pass which is probably a big thing atm. I think we should revisit this game and revamp it for a modern day approach for it to become a modern success but until then we would need a private server for NA.

had very good moments in this game , in NA and EU. his peak was in NA, then NA EU decided to separate due to lag... when the game starts fresh with no OP gear is great. I think some caracters and gears were just way to broke and spammy for competition, and the there was greedy P2W that destroyed the game.

It's one of the most unique and also one of the best games I have ever played. However I don't think it has any potential for future official releases and would rather see a game that would heavily inspire on Lost Saga and expand on it, leaving out bad stuff that most games from asian market bring (such as p2w).

I think the 2 main reasons for Lost Saga downfall were the lag and unbalanced gameplay.
The game is charming and fun af but the fun was nothing compared with the frustrations of all the unbalanced items and heroes. It got to the point where it was all about pay to win, you payed for the new rare heroes sets and you could get the most OP items of the game in one click.
It was frustrating playing vs players when they had all this rare heroes and gears. That's why it got to a point where i would only play the "boss mode" and fish all day long.
But the game would keep me playing with the visuals, the customization, the heroes, the random gear boxes etc. I loved when i grinded currency to open gear boxes, when event quest gave rare gear boxes, rare heroes scroll. It was all about "what will i get now?" it was exciting to get new things to try and work it out with your current heroes/gears. The gear customization skin is one of the best cosmetic items i saw in online video games, it was so fun getting one and decide carefully how you will use it. I could talk all day on how fun these days were.
This game was the first and only time i actually invested time in a guild. Was also the first time ever i went call with unknown people, they really helped me with my social anxiety at the time, they treated me so well even thought i truly sucked at the game. They were just trying to have fun like me and we had lots of them.

every year or so I google this game I hold very dearly as an avid player of it since the OGPlanet days and came across this nice short documentary video on it, and I'm glad to see it as I do believe this game has potential as it basically just needs a solid frame to sit on with a modern client and strong servers for lower ping. I saw you mention Amazon Games in the comments as a potential company to continue this game and I'm going to try to contact them just to suggest picking this game up ^^
I still hold my belief that this game started to heavily downgrade in gameplay quality as soon as premium heroes (prems for short) came out, the first different type of hero in the game. Prems basically were the publisher's way of gaining some extra money by basically sponsoring another company by making a hero in LS representing a character from said company, the first examples being characters from the BlazBlue franchise such as Ragna the Bloodedge, Sol Badguy and Hazama Honoka. These characters were the catalyst for blatantly overpowered heroes to come in the game. For example Hazama for the first time in the game having never-seen-before long air combos PLUS being able to stay in the air extremely long PLUS extreme mobility while in said air and another example being Ragna having the game's first guard (an extremely essential feature in the game as it is in every fighting game) break with a basic attack move that wasn't a skill while also being able to heal from it. With this every single character that came after had to almost 1UP the one before in terms of power and abilities, leading to extreme powercreep and p2w. Eventually even the new non-premium hero releases were overpowered, leading to a scenario where the main point of the game, which is to swap heroes for skillful and effective combos, gradually faded into everyone who wanted to win to spam a small combination of recent overpowered heroes, free and not. Meaning anyone who wanted to try a new hero you got for 3 hours would more than likely get completely curbstomped by players zooming around the map using auto-targeted attacks/skills or players using OP heroes with the most OP gears that give passive buffs whom of which would then switch to heroes with OP gear actives, use those cooldowns, and switch back to the main OP hero with passive gears.

maybe a niche type of player (in an already niche game) but i think competitive (3v3 and 1v1) aspect of lost saga has HUGE potentials.
The skill ceiling or depth of this game is insane. The combination of hero swapping, gears/skill customisation, and the combat mechanics are just so unique.
BIG flaws that made the competitive scene so bad are the game balance and the pay 2 win nature.
i dont know how they would balance this game for competitive, i dont think it's possible. And Pay 2 Win speaks for itself, it basically ruined the game for most people.
im just daydreaming now but it would be cool though if some developer decided to make new game based around similar mechanics but fine tuned it so it's not too overwhelming, balanced, not pay2win, but still fun. The feeling of flow state fighting and doing combos with like 10+ heroes was so good

Lost Saga doomed itself not by being pay to win, not by lag which from my experience, only occurred if you were being flooded with Brazilians who refused to stay on their own server no no no. Lost Saga doomed itself imo thanks to power creep. Lost Saga had a competitive feel to the game which you either are casual or competitive. Something happend right around the time of Mafia bosses, It was the stupid multi attacking characters (1 button for a 5 or more hit special) or rapid fire neutrals. No longer was surviving with low health and making a Guilie Theme comeback something you can do, the developers began creating characters specifically for end game clean up and after the game was dead. Thanks to epics you could throw the most bullsh-- combo of items on a player to do almost zero to death combos and stacking that with clean up characters the game ultimately became anti fun.

I've played Lost Saga since WeMade began hosting servers for it in North America. Personally, I think PapayaPlay did us a favor when they decided to pull out from hosting the game. If it was only going to have a lifespan of 4-6 years, I wouldn't be inclined to invest in the game. There's a lot I want to say about the prospect of Lost Saga being an e-sport but personally, I don't think it's viable with how the game is designed and how it's being maintained.

Lost saga had 3 chances to do it the correct way (the Korean way) but they refuse to make the game more free2play using the soul crafting. That was the only way free2players could get Premium and Rare heroes without spending 20 dollars per hero not including hero slots and gender swap for said hero. Another way to get rare heroes was thru a gacha system called Treasure Capsules which you would get some for free but mainly needed your bank account. As someone who was able to play the KR version, the NA version needed to add soul crafting and lower prices of heroes but everyone at that time knew Z8Games was to greedy for that and people just kept wishing the game would die faster. This is all from when z8games had ownership of lost saga. OGP had the gold age of the game which in my opinion was the best time to play it. Once wemade got ahold of the game i had already moved to the KR version and only quit the KR version cause of the lag and only being able to try new heroes and play adventure mode solo. Once z8games took over, all i could do was watch the game burn as Z8games ruining what was left of the ip. There was also copyright problems with a couple of the heroes, one i really remembers was Zorro a normal hero and a couple of the premium heroes.

It’s dead in NA, game died for a variety of reasons. Most of all, Devs did not care for our side of the game. We didn’t have the ability to create our own heroes like other servers did, fixes were slow and the game was a buggy mess, text was untranslated or missing, the community felt unheard, no LSWC invites for years since like OGP. We almost had a re-launch under papayaplay but they cancelled it because they devs were going to take our license in about 4 years and the game would shut down again.
Not to mention the fact that the game was horrifically unbalanced and many older heroes did not get updates that allowed them to simply stay somewhat relevant.
