    Marcie, I just bought a Harbor Freight dual drum rock tumbler and I was getting ready to make my first batch of sea glass. The directions say to oil the bearings before first use with 3 in 1 oil. I just turned it on to oil and only one rod is spinning around. Are both rods supposed to be spinning? I’m afraid that maybe my machine is defective?!? HELP!!! Thanks in advance.

    Hi Marcie, thank you for making this informative video. I’m laid up due to surgery and contemplating at some DIY sea glass but live no where close to a beach. 🤣
    Question: do you have a recommendation on a single drum tumbler?
    Also, what is the amount of plastic pellets you are using?

    • @marcieziv
      @marcieziv  2 года назад +1

      Hi Jennifer! Since I have a tumbler from MJR I would check out what they have. I’ve only used dual drums so I don’t have that personal experience to draw from. My very first tumbler was from harbor freight when that video was made and I still use that. Again it’s a dual however they may have single drums. As far as pellets I don’t use them anymore. I use the #36 grit and that gets my glass to where I want it. If I want to make jewelry or put glass in a finer application I use a series of grits. …I had called MJR tumblers at a point when I was looking to get a bigger tumbler and had a fab conversation with a gentleman there .. lots of information as I was on a fact finding mission. Btw I used only 2 tblsp of the white plastic pellet (vid you are referencing) I hope this helps you and heal FAST!!! Get out there and create!
      Thank you for watching💕 btw… I always encourage viewers to do research, ask a lot of questions so you can make an informed decision. The choices I made on my purchase may or may not work for you. I’ve read a lot of reviews that are supportive of the companies I’ve purchased from and and many not so much. I have not had issues and I run my machines a lot. I’m fully anticipating manufacture support should I have an issue🥰fingers crossed

      Hi the pellets are plastic. They are used to fill in the space of rock tumbler and help agitate glass or stones. You can buy on Amazon or at a places that sell tumblers. Personally I don’t use anymore. I have made various batches of glass some with pellets using same grit and others without using same grit and I cannot tell the difference between the tumbler glass pieces😊

      @@marcieziv Appreciate the response and pun lol. I'm glad I found your channel and look forward to watching more of your videos. Do you recommend going with a regular rock tumbler or is it possible to use a concrete mixer first for building a concrete wall/fence and then cleaning it out and retiring it to use as a large scale rock/glass tumbler? I was thinking I could add sea glass to the wall mosaic style and also use it to make sea glass for rock gardens and borders between the wall and the growing parts of the yard. I'll do my own research before buying a concrete mixer, but I was wondering if you have any experience or have seen good results for using one for rock tumbling.

    • @marcieziv
      @marcieziv  3 года назад +1

      Ok so I don’t have personal experience with the cement mixer. I have googled it and saw several videos on folks using them successful for your tumbling. You mentions the concrete wall then embedding sea glass.. this is what I am done but using bottles (as the bricks) mortar to adhere and build then finishing off with sea glass and colorful bits of pottery, marbles etc. I have seen some beautiful garden walls tho the way you at describing. (Botanical garden in Gainesville ) had this .. so all in all I went with the rock tumbler. 🤔 keep me posted! You will need to do a video.

    Hey Marcie just came by your video. Yes I've just started sea glass art. As a fellow Floridian I was thinking.....there's no sea glass on the beach.........especially in FL so looking to make my own. Where do you get your colored glass. Went to 2 thrift stores and bought about 5 bottles and found 4 were colored glass. One was actually blue through and through so got a little color. What about beer bottles....maybe for brown and green. What other suggestions particularly for the colored glass?

    • @marcieziv
      @marcieziv  2 года назад

      Hi Paige! Yes here in Florida lots of seashells but not too much Seaglass… however all is not lost in regards to real colored glass bottles. Ok so Pelegrino( green glass) beer bottles ( green and brown, clear) Kombutcha, Italian wine bottles ( blue) when the stores (liquor stores, high end super markets) have tastings they dispose their bottles. And I swoop in🤣 I am not adverse to buying glass bottles but I am cautious thrifting and I’m sure you know that a glass could be colored however when placed in a rock tumbler it goes clear bc it was only tinted glass as from what I read above you found out. Ty for watching! Appreciate it💯Tumble on😀

      @marcieziv  3 года назад

      Not weird at all. I attempted to place a whole bottle in my 20 lb tumblr with #36 course grit but it didn’t work. Perhaps it could work in a really large tumbler. I believe it would have to be a setup almost like you would have in sandblasting… you are accomplishing pretty much the same thing.. a similar look. 😄

      @@davidbrazee4779 I was watching a tutorial and the lady doing some real sea glass sculpture and she said that you have to say what it truly is. If it was tumbled by sea water, sand and rocks, then it is sea glass. If you did it on your own, then it is tumbled glass. Church on it!! I'm not trying to be a pain in the neck. Just don't want you to have legal problems!! I'm trying to help!!!!
