Marcie, I just bought a Harbor Freight dual drum rock tumbler and I was getting ready to make my first batch of sea glass. The directions say to oil the bearings before first use with 3 in 1 oil. I just turned it on to oil and only one rod is spinning around. Are both rods supposed to be spinning? I’m afraid that maybe my machine is defective?!? HELP!!! Thanks in advance.
Hi! Both rods should turn. ( the rods under both barrels) Bring it back to Harbour Freight. I can only imagine your frustration. ☺️ please keep me posted. Ty.
Cheyanne, I am enjoying my Rock tumbler from Harbor Freight as well. Its a little work horse. They are easy to use and mine has been low Maintenace. (love your name btw- beautiful) thank you for watching⭐️
very interesting. I recently found some beautiful rare colored sea glass on the beach... reds, orange, blue etc. .. so much fun to hunt for that stuff.
Glass Beach in California it is illegal to take the sea glass from there anymore. I like your idea to make some. Just have to look for different color glass now. I wonder if stained glass would work?
@melanieme8410 Hello! Yes in many places it’s illegal to remove anything from beaches. There are quite a few companies producing food products that package in colored bottles like blue and green. Yes you can use stained glass in a rock tumbler❤️😀 thank you for watching my channel and taking a moment to comment. Rock on 😂
Greetings! I have two rock tumblers. The first one I bought at harbor freight and the second is a MJR. I like them both. Thank you for watching my channel! 😉
Hi the pellets are plastic. They are used to fill in the space of rock tumbler and help agitate glass or stones. You can buy on Amazon or at a places that sell tumblers. Personally I don’t use anymore. I have made various batches of glass some with pellets using same grit and others without using same grit and I cannot tell the difference between the tumbler glass pieces😊
Hello. Those are white plastic pellets that are used to take up the extra space between the glass. Purportedly reduces noise as well. They are reusable. I bought them thinking I needed them However to make the faux seaglass I only use the #36 grit, water and broken glass bits.
Not weird at all. I attempted to place a whole bottle in my 20 lb tumblr with #36 course grit but it didn’t work. Perhaps it could work in a really large tumbler. I believe it would have to be a setup almost like you would have in sandblasting… you are accomplishing pretty much the same thing.. a similar look. 😄
@@marcieziv Thank you so much for the comment! I will see if I can figure anything out but that is good to know. I have always wanted to find a glass with a completed weathered feel but the only think I can find are like painted on versions which doesn't interest me.
Hi Susan! The white or translucent pellets you can purchase online however you really don’t need them. I had added the pellets and grit to tumbler. They are supposed to improve tumbling action and helping grit reach hard to reach places. I don’t use them anymore. When I’m making my sea glass I start at #36 grit super coarse. I’ve had viewers write to me saying they only use sand. They are also ceramic pellets - reusable as well. But again it’s the process you want to go thru. Thank you Forest hing my channel😄
Hi. For under $130 one could set themselves up with a modest beginner tumbler from harbor freight and a bag of course medium . Thank you for watching my channel😊
Hey Marcie just came by your video. Yes I've just started sea glass art. As a fellow Floridian I was thinking.....there's no sea glass on the beach.........especially in FL so looking to make my own. Where do you get your colored glass. Went to 2 thrift stores and bought about 5 bottles and found 4 were colored glass. One was actually blue through and through so got a little color. What about beer bottles....maybe for brown and green. What other suggestions particularly for the colored glass?
Hi Paige! Yes here in Florida lots of seashells but not too much Seaglass… however all is not lost in regards to real colored glass bottles. Ok so Pelegrino( green glass) beer bottles ( green and brown, clear) Kombutcha, Italian wine bottles ( blue) when the stores (liquor stores, high end super markets) have tastings they dispose their bottles. And I swoop in🤣 I am not adverse to buying glass bottles but I am cautious thrifting and I’m sure you know that a glass could be colored however when placed in a rock tumbler it goes clear bc it was only tinted glass as from what I read above you found out.
