I present to you the newest railroad crossing on the CapMetro Central Subdivision. This crossing was constructed alongside the brand new McKalla MetroRail station and opened in February of 2024. A northbound MetroRail train is seen here. The quiet zone here has not yet gone into effect, so trains still sound their horns at this crossing.
CapMetro hardly has a "standard" for new crossing signal installations, at times it feels like they roll a pair of dice to decide what to put up at each crossing. Here the dice landed on a purely Siemens setup with two gated masts. Two extremely loud Siemens low-tone electronic bells were installed along with the new gates, though their high volume is certainly warranted. It is always nice to see a new crossing go in on the Central Sub, and, more broadly, to see Austin's little MetroRail transforming into a respectable regional rail system with each new construction project completed.
