- The names of the 10 people killed by an explosion at a petrol station in Creeslough, Republic of Ireland, have been confirmed.
The victims of Friday's disaster include five-year-old Shauna Flanagan Garwe and her dad Robert Garwe, 50, and 39-year-old Catherine O'Donnell her 13-year-old son James Monaghan.
Leona Harper, 14, Jessica Gallagher, 24, James O'Flaherty, 48, Martin McGill, 49, Martina Martin, 49 and Hugh Kelly, 59 also lost their lives.
Pope Francis was among those who offered their condolences to the people of Creeslough.

Based on the damage, some form of explosion *inside* the gas station itself seems to have been the cause. However, you'd think that someone would have noticed the smell if it was a gas leak? Doesn't smell like petrol afterall. I suppose there could be a leak in the basement or just the crawspace. If it's mostly airtight down there it can allow a buildup of gas without anyone noticing.
Considering it was fairly busy and people kept going in and out of the building, it would seem unlikely to have a reached a decent mixture for an explosion if the leak was in the shop area.

The explosion came from one of the flats above the petrol station

You could see a bus crash and go “I don’t believe this was a normal crash. Why would two cars crash? Wouldn’t they just steer away? It doesn’t make any sense! Wake up everyone!!”

Why would they allow a gas station inside a condominium
Only Americans use gas-station & condominium, but in the early days of motoring the arrangement of having a service-station (or petrol-station) was relatively common. For a start, the fuel-tanks were much smaller than today, plus there was almost always a mechanic's garage attached providing most of the income for the business, then for convenience the mechanic & his family would live in accommodation behind or above the business premises.
Although most of the older service stations still existing in regional areas here in Australia are almost exclusively the former with the dwelling behind, there are still some of the latter I know of here in Sydney.
Actually there's one near me in Narwee which has a flat above the shop & mechanic's workshop, but like many others before it, the property is now up for sale with planning-permission to develop the site into shops with several floors of apartments above!
However, there still exists a 1920's era service-station in North Turramurra (near where my mother grew up), that undoubtedly won't be demolished as it's a popular set-location for television & movie dramas set in the 40's & 50's!

Natural Gas and propane explosions can blow themselves out before anything catches fire and they don’t saturate the flammable material.
Really is scary, one minute hoping into a shop for a paper or a bottle of coke, the next minute gone. We really take life for granted until it's to late. Condolences to all who have suffered and lost loved ones.

It's a petrol-station at a general-store, where there was a couple of other shops (including a hair-dressers), with several residential units above the shops. Apparently something sparked a gas-leak explosion, but it's too early to know the exact cause.

The fuel tanks remained secure throughout the incident. As Colm said, the most likely hypothesis for now is that a gas cylinder exploded in one of the apartments above the shop (none of the buildings were connected to the gas network).
