Some people have criticized the music being played in this scene, saying that the music should sound more evil and not ethereal because Molesar was evil. However, they fail to realize that at first, Molesar was appearing as if he was good to Dr. Cuza. So, therefore, the ethereal music for this scene was perfect.
Well said.. In the novelization Mollisar merely took the corruption of Therodor Kuza into itself, and so it healed him. Mollisar was a creature that fed on corruption and darkness within people..
It was utter genius for Tangerine Dream to combine the magnificence of Thomas Tallis and convert it into this small portion of the soundtrack. I could listen to this type of music for hours!
I have heard there music since "79" Beside the "keep" there music is in "The Sorcerer" Roy Scheider, intense film "Thief" James Caan And "Legend" director Ridley Scott starring Tom Cruise, Tim Curry & Mia Sara. Not many people know this but the Director a William Friedkin said in an article "If I knew about Tangerine Dream I would have gone with them ,then those Bells" Imagine what the Exorcsit would have been with there music in the movie "My God more Scary" Thank you Tangerine Dream.
Utterly fantastic! What a great director M. Mann is! The combination of the music with this scene is totally genius. Could watch this over and over again...
A Great Movie, by Michael Mann no less, and the soundtrack carries a lot of weight for this film. It really compliments it and this scene is a great example.. Matt
I got a bootleg of this at a horror convention, just watched it today and Ill have to say I was shocked at how epic this scene was. I literally had to go back and watch this scene about 20 times. That smoke and the music is just totally perfect. It's crazy they did these things in the 80's!
Some brilliant SFX techs in Britain back then. All mechanical and in front of the camera, or double exposures and hand-drawn lightning effects in-camera) see Krull and Dragonslayer for similar work. No CG at all, it barely existed then, only The Last Starfighter and TRON had put Computer Imaging as it was called on screen. Wally Veevers did much of what you see, but he died suddenly shortly after the film wrapped, and so the combat between Glaeken Trismegisthus and Radu Molasar on the top of the Keep was not finished. There exists a sequence of Glaeken falling into the vast space below the Keep, and Eva coming to find him, which can be found here on youtube. It also pulls off that 'act it backwards, so the smoke flow inwards' thing.
A strange but interesting movie. Wish this was available to download. Some of Tangerine dreams best work. The book is pretty good to. Ian McKellen looks like he was always an old man.
That is both interesting to me and quite sad. Interesting that SO MUCH footage was left on the cutting room floor!! Imagine what is in there!!! God, what I'd give to see that!! Michael Mann is a genius at what he does, so it would be INCREDIBLE! And the sad part is Paramount's decision to NOT release it...to NOT make a "Director's Cut" or whatever! This movie has such a HUGE cult following (including yours truly) and I think as we approach the 30th anniversary, it would be a perfect time!!
The 80's were the immaculate capturing of one's imagination come true in the most mystical cinematic ambience personified through originality in the most rudimentary form coupled with superb musical genius. Tangerine Dream is immortal brilliance!!
VERY VERY well-said, my friend!!!! For any light, there is the darkness...for any good, there is evil. This world is layered in opposites. It couldnt exist otherwise. Balance...thats the KEY word here.
The special effects for this scene . . coupled with the (in the main) Tangerine Dream soundtrack (the choir outside) but yeah , Michael Mann disowned this single gem in the whole rotten H _ _lywood pantheon of his rest of obvious blackmailed 'career' . . gotta love the arts lovin mafia
Critics panned this movie when it came out and I dont know why. It's one of the best gothic horror movies ever made. Well written, acted, great sets and sfx and the music is haunting. Michael Mann is a very un appreciated director.
"Gloria, (from the) Mass for Four Voices" by Thomas Tallis(1505-1585), arr. by Tangerine Dream. Some people think this movie is corny, but I think its a really great fantasy movie. Tangerine Dream was the perfect choice for it. Shot in Wales, UK btw. I just today got the widescreen dvd, label: 'A Mental Release' from (of all places) Papua New Guinea?? go figure.
@DetroitLove4U WOW!! Your comment sums up what I feel about both the music and the cinematic/television of the 1980's!! It is a rare moment when I see or hear ANYHING past about 1992 that has the same...quality as that of the period I call "the 80's." For ME...the period is really from about 1982 to 1992. But it's a lot easier just to say "the 1980's." Your comment reflects intelligence and deep thought...a RARE thing in RUclips comments...THANK YOU!! I COMPLETELY agree with you!!
A lot of it is plot and character development. You actually get to see people descend into madness under Molasar's influence. You can see in the theatrical cut that the priest character just suddenly acts crazy and turns on the professor. Maybe Shout Factory or another DVD company that does good work will do it. F. Paul Wilson also did a graphic novel version since he was disappointed with how this turned out. It was his visualization of the novel. Read it while listening to Tangerine Dream!
2:02 when i'm not sure why someone is where they are.. i'll ask them, "Why are you.... here" all dramatically, like Molossar. in my mind i think i sound heroic..
Yes, the original cut was almost 3 hours long. The studio took the film away from the director and hacked it down to its current length. Paramount pictures still has the footage in their archives and refuse to release it.
The rough cut was 3 hours, not the original cut. The studio didn't recut the movie, they made Michael Mann chop it down to 90 minutes. He did the best he could, even cutting out the ending he preferred.
Saw this at BFI's NFT back in 2008. One of the best opening scenes I've ever seen to a movie and the soundtrack is wonderful. This is also a great scene and one of McKellan's strangest performances! I really like the whole History, Fantasy, Sci Fi, Horror, Myth rolled into one, like Wicker Man or Ravenous. Clearly the released edit was a mess and huge chunks missing as other comments on here show. Would really like to see the 3 hour version- is there still a Director's Cut in the works?
Tangerine Dream's soundtrack makes this film so much more. I'm a huge fan of this film. Kind of amazed it did so poorly, I guess people shrugged it off as just some demon movie. Even has a good message about where hatred leads people.
This is a Gregorian chant, the third mass of Christmas day that heralds "puer nobis est natus / a child has been born" - which makes ironical sense since this is the first time Molasar could take a solid form. This scene made the movie.
@prairiemain the lights and shadows always coming from our self , we are the shadow , we are the light , we are the dream and nightmare in this and another worlds....( from my point of wiev )
More importantly the extra footage explains who Glaeken and Molasar are, their connection to each other, and their motivations. The film as it exists now does not mention that Molosar feeds on death and is planning to go the death camps to grow strong enough to take over the world. For that matter the film never explains who he is and what he is. Check out "The Keep" graphic novel for another visualization of the story. Their is also a fan site that is petitioning for a DVD.
Beautiful piece of music, but it doesn't fit the character (Molasar) at all. It's heroic/angelic, and Molasar is anything BUT that, even if he did save Eva from the Germans.
The music doesn't fit the film at all, like when the two guards are digging out the silver cross, the music just seems so strange for the period it's set and what the two guys are actually doing, but I think that adds to the weirdness of the film in a good way.
@@RG-in7ks you could not be more wrong... the music dosen't need to be period, thats ridiculous. The scene you mention is actually perfect... my favorite. The music and cinematography is what makes this so great.
Some people have criticized the music being played in this scene, saying that the music should sound more evil and not ethereal because Molesar was evil. However, they fail to realize that at first, Molesar was appearing as if he was good to Dr. Cuza. So, therefore, the ethereal music for this scene was perfect.
Floyd Brennan exactly..molasar is a liar with the capacity to heal as well as kill...yet he chooses to kill.
Well said..
In the novelization Mollisar merely took the corruption of Therodor Kuza into itself, and so it healed him.
Mollisar was a creature that fed on corruption and darkness within people..
The book is addicting evil fun, wish I could read it again for the first time. Movie could have been great, it does have it's charms.
In interview Michael Mann said that Molassar has a tiny bit of good in him but is mostly 'pure power' so there you have it
Anyone know where i can find the original music....its beautiful
THANKS
It was utter genius for Tangerine Dream to combine the magnificence of Thomas Tallis and convert it into this small portion of the soundtrack. I could listen to this type of music for hours!
Ditto...
This one sequence is just utterly magnificent. It justifies the entire rest of the film.
I agree, what a moment in a great film
Agreed...
I have heard there music since "79" Beside the "keep" there music is in "The Sorcerer" Roy Scheider, intense film "Thief" James Caan And "Legend" director Ridley Scott starring Tom Cruise, Tim Curry & Mia Sara. This IS Film making! a great example of it, Michael Mann is one of the most underrated directors in the business! Bar none.
My favorite part of the movie. The whole movie was a great idea along with the music.
As evil as he is Molasar is undeniably magnificent (albeit in a very terrifying way). The music says everything important.
Utterly fantastic! What a great director M. Mann is! The combination of the music with this scene is totally genius. Could watch this over and over again...
A Great Movie, by Michael Mann no less, and the soundtrack carries a lot of weight for this film. It really compliments it and this scene is a great example..
Matt
A fantastic movie and superb soundtrack
And THANK YOU for the information!! I had NO idea!!
Your reply is greatly appreciated!!
One of the most beautiful pieces of music used in a film Damn shame it is not available anywhere but here.
I'm not a religious person, but if there was a heaven, this would be the singing of angels as we entered.
I got a bootleg of this at a horror convention, just watched it today and Ill have to say I was shocked at how epic this scene was. I literally had to go back and watch this scene about 20 times. That smoke and the music is just totally perfect. It's crazy they did these things in the 80's!

I like this version much better than the one than was finally included in the soundtrack CD

THIS is a soundtrack! NO one can come close to Tangerine Dream! NO ONE this is Heaven mixed with ghost like etherial music..THATS MUSIC...
Thanks Friend , warm hugs.
The Keep and the soundtrack are classics ! Watched this in the 80s !

Utterly magnificent these sequence as said, justifies the entire film.
You bring up a VERY good point....one I hadn't considered, but I like the way you think!
Is there any higher quality version anywhere? Its so amazing.
Great film made great by the soundtrack
The special effects for this scene . . coupled with the (in the main) Tangerine Dream soundtrack (the choir outside) but yeah , Michael Mann disowned this single gem in the whole rotten H _ _lywood pantheon of his rest of obvious blackmailed 'career' . . gotta love the arts lovin mafia
I keep this on repeat while I write.
The music is adapted from the Mass for Four Voices "Puer Natus Est" by Thomas Tallis.
Now THAT I HAVE seen....and I like it!!
Its a more positive ending for the protagonists...
Thanks!!

I wish I could this movie with the hour and a half of footage they cut out.
superbe film

Michael Mann knew he flew too close to the Sun . . with this & was made to back away from his awesome creation ( made to back away)
Something else that might piss you off further. There is an alternate ending closer to the ending in the novel.
THET CUT 90 MINUTES OUT OF THIS??
@prairiemain
the lights and shadows always coming from our self , we are the shadow , we are the light , we are the dream and nightmare in this and another worlds....( from my point of wiev )
Correction.. "Puer Natus Est Nobis" , seven voices

Spem In Alium by Thomas Tallis
"Why are you.....here?"
Evil is Duplicitous.
The best cinematic exploit in human history & it's an stupid vampire movie . . we are fucked
also the way the Army captain starts regretting his choices and wishing he'd joined the anti fascists in Spain
Tangerine dream is interesting . . on mushrooms
Molasar is the true God.
I WISH I could get Molasar to go after my ex-girlfriend!!! Hell, they're BOTH EQUALS in EVIL!!! lol!
Be careful what you wish for my friend....!
Beautiful piece of music, but it doesn't fit the character (Molasar) at all. It's heroic/angelic, and Molasar is anything BUT that, even if he did save Eva from the Germans.
Oh sure, but isn't that the point? He puts on a pretty good act.
