In 71 in Santa Cruz we were drilling holes in our fins and attaching bungee cord. The slip knot at our ankle was brutal and would bind up and cut off circulation. I went and lived on the North Shore 71-72 and you ran the risk of getting your ass beat to a pulp for wearing a leash then. When I returned the plug had been invented and bungee replaced with polyurethane cord with a stint of surgical tubing in between. Hats off to these guys for jumping on the opportunity and making a living from surf equipment. I've had so many opportunities but quit at the first wall.
@@creatures_of_leisure I forgot we took fiberglas rope and made a loop on the deck at the tail before they made the plugs but after we drilled holes in our fins. I was one of the first few riders in the Santa Cruz area to embrace the Thruster. David Mel, the younger brother of John Mel and uncle of Peter Mel was shaping them at Freeline. When I had my quad I didn't like the slip on bigger waves and was going to add a fifth. All the area shapers told me not to and it wouldn't work and now I see all these five fin boards not working lol. Let that be a lesson to the younger surfers. Never discount your ideas until YOU prove them wrong.
1975 August. First surfboard (Plastic Fantastic 6.4 swallowtail). First leash (leather leg wrap + black + white stretch cord). This combination was a boomerang rope with a large spear at the danger end. I had no clue about John, Pipelines™ (I had a few of those, and Balin leg ropes!), his innovation infection, and the roots of CoL. I am now far more proud of my 5+ CoL bags and multiple leashes and track pads. Cheers and mahalos for telling the story. Thank you, John Malloy and the CoL team for pioneering in your passion--and mine! 🏄🏽♂️💪🏽🇦🇺
Man what an incredible adventure! They use to do it right back then! Seriously. And there is nothing like doing what you do for the love and passion of it. I'll be checking out Creatures products much closer now. Thanks for the story, and inspiration.
Great aussie company. Strangely enough living and growing up on the east coast Id never heard of creatures until the last 15 or so years, it was all about O&E and Balin over here. I always thought Balin were the 1st but there ya go. Good on you Creatures and congratulations on a stella product, company and employees.
This video doc was so well made so inspirational classic footage plus modern ripping, info i had no idea about and I'm no slouch on surf history, just great job I'm seriously never buying anything but this product from now on. Thanks for this, aloha nui loa boys.
Used creatures since i was 6, almost 30 now, have loved all the different styles of the pro pads, leggies and board bags through the years, and the team riders have always been the top crew, yewwww keep it up and was such a good watch on how it all started. 🤙🤙🇦🇺
Great story of John Malloy & his leg rope. I was one of those die-hard surfers who refused to use the legrope/leash for 10 years after it appeared but finally got tired of all the swimming & embraced it. Thanks John & all who helped you.
Had no idea the background to this company always had creatures of leisure leg ropes reminds me of the start of I think it was rip curl wetsuits and an old stomping ground in the south of W/A ...wow washing machine drum belts how it all started amazing story 👏
Hawaii 1984 I got on the elevator with a 7 foot Pipeline leash and 3 floors later had a 30 foot leash still intact with it's cuff on the first floor but my crushed swallow tail was attached to the other end on the 3rd floor! The elevator door opened - some old man told me I was a stupid kid when I asked him if he had a pocket knife lol - the door closed and when I arrived at the first floor I had one heck of a story with a leash to prove it. I kept that leash for 30 years and to this day I wonder whatever happened to it and my Randy Lewis Lazer Zapper clone.
Never knew this company background, I've always bought products from company's started and maintained by surfers and not some corporate monster, support your own.. Now you have a customer for life...
Best damn advertisement movie I've ever seen-- ONLY advertisement movie I've ever seen-- well done. I wanna buy Creature of Leisure now.
Right on Jack...Glad you enjoyed it!
