- Model Railway disaster. I melted the point motors! This was my first attempt at any sort of wiring and soldering BUT I made a rookie error by wiring in the wrong sort of switches. This melted the #Gaugemaster SEEP point motors.

Keeping it real. Love it. And I learnt something. Beautiful modelling. Steve.
Thanks Steve
That looks great Debbie yes I know how you feel about point motors I am bumbled my way through them in the past. all the best Tom
They are still a mystery to me Tom! If I had the skill I’d design a straight forward plug and play set up for points
Debbie, just found your channel and have subscribed. You wont be the last person to buy the wrong switch to operate poonts, but may be if people find this video they may save themselves the problem.
Thanks I just wish the model shop where I bought them had said something!
Good to see you showing your mistakes and how to put it right good idea to get a CDU be Interested to see which one you buy, the one section of your layout is amazing I con only wish I become half as good as you your skills are fantastic
Thanks I’ve bought a Gaugemaster one so hopefully that will do the trick!
Layout looks great. Point Motors have been the bane of my life on my current layout! Glad to see I'm not the only one.
I must admit they have caused me some real grief!
The panel you made and it works that makes it special, love the sound of the Santa Fe.
Thanks I am proud I did it myself! Yes I love my USA locos!
Beautiful module. Points motors can run on DC to eliminate buzzing. I second the idea of using a pair of momentary push buttons. Congratulations on getting it to work! Lots of fun.
Thanks 😊
Alls well that ends well Debbie. I had a problem using switches so in the end I took them all out and now ive programmed them and use my dcc controller. All the best Andy
I might go that way eventually but don’t have that functionality with the prodigy express
It`s always a learnig curve. A cdu capacitive discharge unit is a good idear it will give you the short burst of power needed for a clean motion of the solenoid, My old panel was momentary push switches.
Good advice thanks
I predominantly use Gaugemaster PM1 switches with electrofrog points but following a house move and a necessary track modification to fit the new railway room I've had to use a variety of other manufacturers products including Peco and the Hattons PM-01, combined with rod and tube. And the PM-01 comes with an extension rod.
I’m still learning but at least they do now work. Hope your house move went ok and new railway room is fun
That was a pain with the Point Motor Debbie. Your Switch panel is really neat, well done. And your detailed Scenics are amazing, BUT the piece de la resistance for me is the Marshall Amp in the corner.
Ha ha well spotted! Maybe I might get more subs if I play guitar!
Hi Debbie, luckily no major damage done, we all learn from our mistakes. Great work on the panel its very neat. Nice short run to test the points all working well. My Hornby Solenoid point switchers are noisy but I dont mind as I can hear that they are working. Cheers, Paul.
Thanks Paul
Luckily no damage done and an easy fix. What you needed was double throw spring loaded centre off switches. The coils of the point motors can’t stand being powered too long, simple mistake.
Thankfully no harm done! I have now fitted a CDU and they work perfectly
Hi Debbie, what a bummer that was… I made the very same mistake on my first installation of a Peco solenoid motor. Gutted but sorted and lesson learned.. Looking great, all the best, Chris
Indeed a good lesson learnt! Thanks for watching Chris
Hi Debbs. I have subbed. Regards Alan in the loft at " Buckland Junction " Alan Out :o)
Thanks Alan
Hay Debbie : Excellent Structure and Scenery Modelling That Beautifully Set Character; Theme and Era. Unfortunately; Not So Your Choice Of Observed Modern Freight Rolling-Stock and Caboose Which Compromise Your Admired Modelling Efforts. To Also Complement / Support The Detailing Of The Module; May I Suggest That You Weather Your Locos and Rolling-Stock. I Look Forward To Following Your Progress. Yes : In Conjunction With Momentary Control Switches; CDU's Are Essential To Protect and Enhance The Performance Of Twin-Solenoid Turnout Motors. Much Ta and Cheers For Now / Johnny
thanks Johnny. Its hard to get hold of the right era of rolling stock over in the UK. Do you have any details of where I could buy more prototypical ones?
@@KeanesCoveHi Debbie : Know that altho I have modelled North American ( NA ) since 1975 ( after having spent 1973+1974 in the USA ); I actually live in South Africa ( Durban ); so I know well of inherent supply difficulties and comparative high unit-cost; especially when trying to keep to the important aspects of theme and era ! I KNOW that there are reputable and reliable Retail Outlets in the UK who SPECIALISE in the offering of NA Prototype Model Railroading * Stuffs; * so check it out. I appreciate your positive response to my open suggestion; but given the high degree of your accomplished detailed modelling; you will immediately see the added benefit imparted by the unifying aspects of era / theme to your modelling endeavours ... ! @@johneveritt3976 England of course!
Good vid 👍👍👍👍
Thanks Dylan
Solenoid points need either a momentary spring return centre off lever or a pair of momentary push buttons, however for the two reasons of a better throw and to ensure you can never accidentally push the button/lever for too long, you should use them in combination with a CDU.
Will be wiring in a CDU tomorrow
love the model - the trains are almost a side issue to the rest of the scenery.
Thanks. The trains will have more prominence on the second board and I do really like the old US steam locos
You need a momentary switch which automatically returns to off(middle).
Thanks Mick
It's all part of the fun! The layout looks beautiful. I noticed the Marshall amplifier in the background - do you play guitar?
Yep. And ukulele!
@@KeanesCove excellent! 🎸
Have you fitted a Capacitor Discharge unit which would protect your motors if something went wrong with a switch internally just a thought
I have now Andy! Good advice
