The timing chain slip occurs when a worn out and shifted under tension chain lands at a wrong tooth. The crankshaft pulley has 42 teeth, 360deg/42 = 8.57deg - angular distance between any two crankshaft teeth. So, the critical point for crankshaft slip is 8.57/2 = 4.28deg. But this is the shift between the crankshaft and chain landing at the teeth. This application measures the total phase error between the crankshaft and camshaft, and the camshaft will have its own phase shift added to the total measured phase value: 360/46teeth/2 = 3.91deg. So, the critical measured phase angle is: 4.28 + 3.91 = 8.19deg. - this is the tripping point at which your chain is guaranteed to slip.

Deutsche Auto Parts Hello, I wanted to get rid of a doubt, I made the chain change and when measuring the value of the chain I went from -5.50 to -2.19. that's fine or I should correct. thank you very much for your channel
Do the +/-5.00 values apply to TFSI engines as well, or just the TSI? If they only apply to the TSI, are there known values for the TFSI? Also curious as to whether those values are of concern in the absence of any other indicators of chain wear. I was under the impression a chain, unlike a belt, will give some obvious signs of wear and imminent failure (e.g., noisy, misfires, and ultimately DTCs and/or MIL illumination).
I am glad I never had this issue with me 06 GLI (FSI) , she always ran flawlessly, belts are less problematic than chain... but know I drive an A6 3.0T and starting to do the chain rattle at 120k miles...I'll Chek this ASAP with my obd11...but I dont see this option on my obd11...
My car is on 215000 km. On obd11 was showing -5.17, when I was replacing timing chain, I found out that, the timing cover was being scratched by the chain. After doing the replacement now I'm back to 0.17.
So the correct measurement should be slightly negative at idle with a permissible range of slightly neg. to slightly pos? Can the error only go in one direction (positive) due to direction of engine rotation?
I did my Chain/Tensioners last fall (2014 CC/2.0 /M6/117k Mi). My chain was stretched a solid link and half . Wit that timing correction, the motor ran so much better. Next interval will be 90k if I still have it. I do have other 2.0's that I will certainly replace sooner. Question for those who know...is the 1.8 essentially the 2.0 just smaller disp? Should I be looking at Chain replacement on that as well (2014 Jetta 1.8/80k). From the outside they look identical, I have not had to open it up for anything yet. thx
I'm a GTI enjoyer, but I'm almost positive your 2014 Jetta has an EA888- I'm only unsure whether it's a Gen 2 or Gen 3. If it's a Gen 3, it's almost exactly the same as the 2.0 in the GTI aside from crank & connecting rod bits, turbo, and no variable exhaust valve lift. Sorry, that's all I got
My 2014 gti is 93k miles. Just checked. I’m at -3.54. I have updated tensioner but I get some rattle on warm start ups and sometimes cold. Ima go ahead and do the internal maintenance. To close to risk it. I’m going k04 very soon
Great video as usual...quick question.....you hit on timing chain elongation:reset after chain replacement briefly.....this is my situation for a 2.0T 2014 Audi Q5.....but most recent version of VCDS does not have that option in Basic Tests!!! Is there some other place, or some other name to look for it....or some other way to do the reset......the engine starts immediately(it had the typical stretched chain lag before chain replacement), and the adaptation value is way under 5%,....but its running very rough.....appreciate any help you can offer....thanks!
I was at -4.5 without misfires, after replacing the chain and updating the tensioner im at. -.11. The old tensioner held together thankfully and had 1 tooth left before being maxed out
That's actually quite interesting timing chain data, thanks for sharing it! How many miles were on the engine at the time, if you don't mind my asking?
What is the correct data block for a VW CC 2012? What if the engine light flashes 2x, then holds steady? Replaced the spark plugs and use ignition coils which may not be a good idea. If this doesn't work most likely the timing chain tensor and belt?
I purchased an OBD Eleven form your shop over a year ago. I plugged in my scan tool and looked for this " Camshaft adjustment adaptation" and couldn't find it. Can tell me what the the degree of timing would be good and bad for my 2013 Vw Passat 3.6 and what I would need to look at in the scan tool. I followed these instructions and couldn't find it. I used the text based search on the phone app.
Hey DAP, when I go into live data (A4 B8 3.2 FSI), I can't find phase position, or anything related to the cam/timing chain really. Is this locked or does this engine not have such supervision?
Audi A3 2008.5 2.0T TSI: My chain stretch is at -1.69º with 160,000 miles. I was expecting way more. I'm worried about that tensioner though. Nothing has been done to the timing since it was purchased new.
Last month VW settled a multi class action lawsuit concerning the chain and tensioner issues. From what I read waiting for judge approval. Looks like around 2008 to 2014 are getting some kind of warranty extension or something like that for 10 year 100K mile reimbursement for damage already paid for. Maybe the rest of us may get replacement before catastrophic failure.
Unfortunately no preventive repairs. If chain is noisy or slipped one tooth you can get free tensioner replacement. But if it fails catastrophically only the tensioner gets covered (not the engine). Also, I heard they may require proof of all oil changes, which must show the approved oil types. So basically it’s useless coverage.
@@MustafaAlMidani So did you use another brand's OBDII-to-Bluetooth dongle? I have one I've been using with the Torque app and was wondering if OBDeleven app will connect to it.
So, when I do this test at idle the reading is 1.6% and when I whip the throttle the reading goes to 3.6%. Is this test supposed to remain at idle for the duration of it?
For future reference - likely no Vw uses these measuring blocks in a proprietary format that isn't officially in the OBD2 spec I believe, so you need custom tools to access them properly?
What about mk7's I have heard they are prone to tensioner problems prematurely as well. Also what RPMS should a mk7 gti be within at idle? On the COBB it is reading 672rpm
Hello sir! Excellent video! I want to ask if you know if we also can check the chain strech for the 1.4 tsi vw engines like cavd , cavf , caxa , caxc , blf , blg , bmy etc...here in Greece we have to many 1.4tsi cars than 2.0 ltr.... thanks in advance!!

No noise, other than the normal I-sound-like-a-diesel sounds (I think its the hpfp?). ANYWAYS, what else should I be changing to account for chain stretch? Just tensioner+chain? Or should I plan for any guides/etc? Everything is original except the tensioner

Hey, I have an AAX engine gti mk5 and I'm reading 5 degrees on my OBDEleven, the engine also sounds like a diesel engine. Would replacing the shorted timing chain on the top with the yellow tensioner fix the problem or do I need to go deeper down. I'm not even sure if there are more chains on my vehicle since I always though that it would be a belt engine.
Hi, My mechanic told me I need a new chain on my 2015 1.8 GSW. I asked him how he diagnosed it, and he said he did it with a stethoscope, so I am skeptical. My original issue is a lugging /knocking sound at low RPM prior to downshifting. If I drive in sport mode, I really don't have any issues. I was thinking of getting a pedalbox to get through another year or two. What are your thoughts?
My 160K Audi 2.0T has bad vibration at Idle. I also had a P0301 miss fire at cyl.1. I replaced PCV Valve, 4 Plugs +Coils. No change. I then removed Intake, cleaned all carbon with walnuts and added 4 new injectors. still no change. could a stretched chain throw the balance shaft out of time to the point causing vibration?
Hi do you have a video with the tfsi 2014 year audi check for the same issue having fuel pressure codes and someone says the timing chain is going and no code for out of timing. Thank you
Hi. I have Golf 7 GTI Clubsport EA888.3. Camshaft adaptation intake bank 1, phase position is 0.0 - 0.3. However, Camshaft adaptation exhaust bank 1, phase position is bouncing between 3.5, 3.7, 4.1 and 4.5. Is this normal? Engine is on 40.000 km.
Thank You for the vids. Yes, it is time. My son bought a second hand MK6 GTI. I'm doing the homework and telling him let's get the Kit (and tools) and get this taken care of...Is there a comprehensive resource for how the tooling is used when changing the Chains?
Is the extension distance of the tensioner any indication? My 2009 A3 is apart, in my garage, getting a new timing chain as I write this. With he old chain/tensioner/guides the tensioner was nearly fully extended. With the new parts, it's only out about two notches. It seems the chain stretch is part of the reason for chain noise, the other part being worn guides. ~130,000 miles.
Is it worrying if my car shows 112.5 degrees? 😅 It's a 1.4 TSI not a 2.0. It's seems impossible to be 100 degrees off right? Considering it runs and pulls great
My friend thank you for your help, i would like to ask you, why my OBDeleven pro shows value prices and it isnt like yours which shows with letters what it is every value i see in my phone. Thank you again.
So our Timing Chain looks OK as we are under -3 degrees (2.48). But if we drive the vehicle on an outing and then pull into the garage and recheck parament 93, it's at 3.11. So what gives? How much does a timing chain replacement job cost?
How can I get to that module for my 2012 Tiguan? In the car’s menu I get “info”, “history”, “Apps”, “Real Time Data”, “Manual”, “Graphics” & “discussions”. I guess it would be Real Time Data but when I get in I don’t have an “engine” module like in the video but lots of different parameters of the car I can choose from. One of them is “timing advance”, would it be? Rgds

I have a 2010 audi a4 , had intake valves bent rebuilt head at machinesho, new pistons and rings chains guides and all. Engine still has a loss of power. Something that I did not know is Intake and exhaust camshafts sprockets are pressed on , that means if your engine goes out of time to point that bends valves it could potentially move lobes out of position and you would never get proper timing , I think that's what is happening with my engine , so to verify I will have to take it apart and inspect camshaft lobes, a shitty design . I would like to know how to check for the sprockets and lobes out of time I just don't want to spend money on camshafts they are very expensive. Please help, thank you.

I also heard something about screen on balance shaft. Would like to learn about these screens. Where can I find info?
hello from 2021 ! i just got my odbeleven, this was the 2nd thing i checked after usual faults. 2012 w/ 64k @ -2.23 I'm good for awhile
Which OBDeleven do you have? I might look into getting one and how much did you get yours for?
Do u need pro version?
@@static_mk6_gli223 standard $60
@@jeroensuk3517 no but mine came with a free pro upgrade
Oke thanks 👍
Great guide, definitely still something worth knowing, I'll be checking this as soon as I'm home. Thanks!
Great video...didn't know you could do it with the scantool! You rock!
What’s difference with intake bank 1, and exhaust bank 1?
Wish I knew this a year and a half ago when I blew the engine. I'll keep an eye on the new one with the obd11. Thanks for the video
Sorry to hear
Hey, at least I know now so I can keep an eye on the new engine I had put in. Again, thanks for the video!
Very good Video thanks u again
My question is can I check my mk5 r32 with the obdeleven to check if I have any stretch on the chains?
Deutsche Auto Parts
Hello, I wanted to get rid of a doubt, I made the chain change and when measuring the value of the chain I went from -5.50 to -2.19. that's fine or I should correct. thank you very much for your channel
We, or I, need an update on this for a Mk7 using the latest version of OBD11.
After rebuilding my 1.8tsi I had 1.05 and after 2 years and 30kkm I have 1.18. So I guess this obdeleven isn't lying 😁
Same
I am glad I never had this issue with me 06 GLI (FSI) , she always ran flawlessly, belts are less problematic than chain... but know I drive an A6 3.0T and starting to do the chain rattle at 120k miles...I'll Chek this ASAP with my obd11...but I dont see this option on my obd11...
Any idea how I can check this in other apps like Torque Pro?
My car is on 215000 km. On obd11 was showing -5.17, when I was replacing timing chain, I found out that, the timing cover was being scratched by the chain. After doing the replacement now I'm back to 0.17.
hi. good tutorial. Is there an obd eleven to check boost leak or simple boost? thank you
So the correct measurement should be slightly negative at idle with a permissible range of slightly neg. to slightly pos? Can the error only go in one direction (positive) due to direction of engine rotation?
Is there a way to check the timing chain tensioner ? 2016 gti
@@andrewsnyder7584 Thank you sir!
This video really helped me learn
@@tedjohnson64 144,000 on original chain and tensioner.

any source for a list of the codes in OBD 11?
Can you share how to check the phase position on an audi q5 using a foxwell N510 elite. Haven't been able to find any videos for this device.
Can you use this method to check the earlier 2.5 engine timing chain ?
Hey DAP,
when I go into live data (A4 B8 3.2 FSI), I can't find phase position, or anything related to the cam/timing chain really. Is this locked or does this engine not have such supervision?
Audi A3 2008.5 2.0T TSI: My chain stretch is at -1.69º with 160,000 miles. I was expecting way more. I'm worried about that tensioner though. Nothing has been done to the timing since it was purchased new.
@iNSTAGiB yep, running strong; it’s close to 200k right now
@iNSTAGiB Yes, I updated the tensioner shortly after this post that first post. It was the old style tensioner.
Bad Day Will it cover preventative actions like replacing it before it breaks?
Unfortunately no preventive repairs. If chain is noisy or slipped one tooth you can get free tensioner replacement. But if it fails catastrophically only the tensioner gets covered (not the engine). Also, I heard they may require proof of all oil changes, which must show the approved oil types. So basically it’s useless coverage.
Do I need OBDeleven credits to perform 093 check? or just OBD part + App?
HappyAlexandros Pro version was enough ...
@@MustafaAlMidani So did you use another brand's OBDII-to-Bluetooth dongle? I have one I've been using with the Torque app and was wondering if OBDeleven app will connect to it.
futbolpunk No it has to be OBDeleven hardware too
Should I be looking for intake or exhaust numbers? I have a 2017 A4 2.0 and when using the ODB11 I need to type the description not just code 93.
So, when I do this test at idle the reading is 1.6% and when I whip the throttle the reading goes to 3.6%.
Is this test supposed to remain at idle for the duration of it?
Quick question... Mine is at - 7.2. So i am not sure what to think. Is this really bad?
Yup it’s not good. Do chains ASAP
Love the video, anyone know if Obdeleven's 093 camshaft adjustment adaptation is the same as Torque Pro's Timing Advance?
For future reference - likely no
Vw uses these measuring blocks in a proprietary format that isn't officially in the OBD2 spec I believe, so you need custom tools to access them properly?
Can you check this same measuring block on an fsi to check the cam chain tensioner?
Is this something you can do with Carista? I just bought this device and have the torque pro app. Thank you for the videos, just subscribed!
Mine is 3.52°... Car runs fine,no codes, power ok,idle smooth... Do or don't on timing chain replacement?
Just bought it to check for stretch. I have a TSi 2012 Beetle 6sp that doesn't feel the same, so I'm hoping this helps me find out why.
thx for the video, my tiguan shows -206 shut i change the timing chain?
What about mk7's I have heard they are prone to tensioner problems prematurely as well. Also what RPMS should a mk7 gti be within at idle? On the COBB it is reading 672rpm
What values will be ok on GTI sport MK7 2016 (MT)?
Hoping you can help

At -7.52 I'm late doing this and have learned that I'm super lucky! I have an 09 Passat 2.0 CCTA engine with 270k km on the car and 140k on the current updated tensioner. No noise, other than the normal I-sound-like-a-diesel sounds (I think its the hpfp?).
ANYWAYS, what else should I be changing to account for chain stretch? Just tensioner+chain? Or should I plan for any guides/etc? Everything is original except the tensioner
I have a 2.0 TSI Passat CC and mine also sounds like a diesel from the outside 😂 I was so confused at the beginning… mine has 220k kilometers on it and I think no chain was changed
@@HarrockI have a 2013 GTI that reads -5.30 around that mark. Can we apply these measurements rules to a 3.0T engine?

Can one use VCDS to check? I have a 21 Passat with 2.0 TSI so I want to bf proactive when it gets higher miles.
Standard obd evelen can be any problem to find this position?
What is the name of the OBD scanner used? Thank you for the informative video!

2010 @ 104k. We did the inspection and it does not have the most current Tensioner in there.

We will have some more timing stuff coming. Not necessarily diy but still should be insightful
Once again, Thank You! Yesterday evening he ran OBDeleven and got 3.63...
One of them is “timing advance”, would it be? Rgds

I have a 2010 audi a4 , had intake valves bent rebuilt head at machinesho, new pistons and rings chains guides and all. Engine still has a loss of power. Something that I did not know
is Intake and exhaust camshafts sprockets are pressed on , that means if your engine goes out of time to point that bends valves it could potentially move lobes out of position and
you would never get proper timing , I think that's what is happening with my engine , so to verify I will have to take it apart and inspect camshaft lobes, a shitty design . I would like to
know how to check for the sprockets and lobes out of time I just don't want to spend money on camshafts they are very expensive. Please help, thank you.
