  • Astronaut Mike Massimino answers the internet's burning questions about the far reaches of space. How do astronauts get leverage when screwing things in? After a long space flight, where does the poo go? Does NASA let astronauts get acclimated to space on their first space walk? Are space suits comfortable? How many languages do astronauts have to learn? Does space have a smell?

9:07 When I visited Johnson's Space Center near Houston astronaut (sorry can't remember the name) told something very interesting - we already have engines capable of flying to Mars in reasonable time, the problem is slowing down... They will never achieve 100% speed until they need to revert thrust to break. So... achieving speed is one thing and is fairly easy. Stopping near your target is something completely different and much more complicated.

That person asking about the leverage is mighty clever. I didn't even think about this one ever. Fun to think that while you're mounted to the space craft and screwing a bolt, you're not only turning the bolt, but also the thing you're mounted to and the thing you're putting the screw into, both relative to their masses. It's weird.
