One really good free agent, which would have eaten up the surplus, ain't gonna fix the problem. It's a scheme problem. The 2013 seahawks defense probably had 4 hofs just on the defense. The colts have 1 in buckner and the secondary is a joke. Now throw in a qb that can't sustain drives with basic accurate throws. You got a team that looks like it might win 3 games.
The secondary hasn’t even been tested with how bad the run defense is.
The run defense is so demoralizing. I had to stop watching the game because it was making me irrationally mad.

Every year gus bradley was dc with the chargers,they got progressively worse. All 4 years. 3 years with colts total defensive rankings: 2022: 15th 2023:24th 2024(so far):31st. Its the gus bradley effect. Btw the he was also with the raiders as dc one year and their defense got better the next year after he left. I was never an eberflus lover, but gus bradley makes matt eberflus look like a genius.
Teams have figured out Gus Bradley's defense. It's that simple. And teams are taking advantage of it. They know where to run and what plays to run on this defense

This rushing defense is garbage. They look like week 13 2006 giving up 375 yds to Jacksonville.
Lol, they won the SB that year. Only problem is they had an offense that could put up at least 28 pts a game, AND there is definitely not a Bob Sanders, Cato June, Gary Bracket, Robert Mathis, Dwight Freeney or Nick Harper on this defensive roster. Even more glaring is they don't have ONE linebacker that has a chip on their shoulder like that squad did.

It is all about trash fans, and trash coaching defensively DC and DLC, signing FA does not solve that. Also WR not named AP can't be dropping 10 balls. If the colts can play defense in a full game and for the rest of the season the way they did in the second half of the game and like they did in the first half vs Houston we will be fine. But removing the coach at this point pretty much stunts your season. So we must work it the right way if you reach a point where the season is not open to progress then you can logically make that call. And so far except for one bad play vs the Pack by Jones the secondary hasn't been as bad as most of you were claiming it is.. All the issues is rush D that a charlie partridge focus he's the head of the Dline he's got to get out of that college mindset. And Gus needs to stop calling soft packages it's that simple are team and defence have been solid enough to make the playoffs in the last several years most of which we were a QB short. As as for injuries we've had them in key spots just like most other teams. Gus wasn't a Ballard guy he was a Frank and Irsay guy check the evidence. And Partridge was the new coaching addition this year they learn to not just players. Also Cross and Franklin and speed all are in the top of tackling not just on the team but in the league check the stats.. The captains need to step up as well.. in order to be accountable as all of you claim the Colts are not being every person who works for the franchise must assess themselves. And as fans we must also assess them not as bias, emotional, I lost a bet so I'm mad fan base but at all areas not just oh it's one guys fault when we know based on life experience it's usually never just one persons fault.

The argument that “defense only gave up 16 so it’s not their fault” is partly missing the point. The yardage that the defense allows does matter. Defense allowed Green Bay to completely control the game and control the clock.
Defensive scheme is why it’s so bad
The scheme isn’t really that terrible. It’s really like average. It’s the players they’re bad. But if you wanna set your standards high, I guess you’re right then.

Ballard is what went wrong... you don't bring everyone back from a team that didn't make the playoffs... Ballard doesn't know how to build a team end of story... we have a couple good players but not a single great one... nothing is going to change until Ballard is fired... this team needs to add proven talent instead of hoping the players you draft help lift the team... Ballard should've been gone when Frank was fired... I really hope Richardson develops because almost everyone wanted to trade up for Stroud... Ballard decided to play it cheap and the Texans are going to own the division for the next decade if Richardson ends up being a bust...
Good grief. Is it too soon to say this is a fireable level of performance? You give up over 250 rushing yards against a team starting its backup QB? To paraphrase the Tuna, the guy that bought the ingredients, and the guy who cooked the dinner are both responsible for this.

When people go on about the GM can I just make one thing I noticed very clear. Whenever Ballard was asked about whether he liked the defense or whether he liked the secondary his response was always about liking the players, he never just outright said “I like every part of this defense and have full faith they are gonna be amazing” he said “I like our Guys”. Not saying he couldn’t have done more but that kind of tell me he does not trust the coaching on the defense nearly as much as the guys he brought in. I think there is more behind the scenes than we know and we could see a lot happen by the end of the year

It’s about 80% a personnel issue. 20% coaching specifically these 10 man rotations on the DLine are horrific . Some guys shouldn’t even be playing let alone on an nfl roster aka Taven Bryan. You know this is a joke of a team when their best cornerback (he’s not even good) is a seventh round pick from 2023.
It's not just the defense! Defense sucks! AR is turning out to be garoppolo 2.0 doesn't make it past second option. Easley overwhelmed. Even Shane wasn't calling pass plays! That's a sign of low confidence in ARs ability. We need to control the ball if we want to win a game!
It really regressed. The run defense was something we could depend on the past couple of years (minus playing against Derrick Henry). But going three and out and not being able to sustain drives is easily gassing out the defense. I love how AR can keep us in games and is a threat to score on any given play, but we really need extend drives to try to even out time of possession. With Fangio available in the off-season, I just don’t understand why we didn’t go for him
Im not surprised that guys that got paid are now playing like shit. They got the 💰, and they're taking it easy ...what other excuse could there be? Its the same scheme as last couple seasons, same players, same DC. The only difference is a bunch of guys got paid.
This organization needs to clean house.Jim Irsay please forget about our glory days our future is at risk. We have been okay with mediocrity since Ryan Grigson entered the building and since Chris Ballard we have actually been CONTENT with mediocrity. Aside from Shane and every guy on the offense, everyone should be gone. I’m talking every player on defense and every coach on defense. This unit is so soft. When your wide receivers can’t even run a route full effort it’s a major problem. Colts fans seem to think guys like Kenny Moore, Zaire Franklin, Ej Speed and Michael Pittman are like elite or something but they are the furthest thing from that. They quite literally are middddd. Jonathan Taylor deserves so much better .

The Gus Bradley defensive scheme is trash the Colts leave a true middle linebacker 245 lb 6 ft 2 linebacker attack and run side light to Sidelines and the way they're playing is why you need preseason
They all got paid on defense and now there making business decisions. Does Franklin’s even have 10 tackles this year. He doesn’t even finish the tackle when he does get there.

Lack of player leadership. No team should be this bad at stopping the run with the talent they have. You have to have the mentality that you have to go out there and earn it. It feels like we are watching a team that has skipped the off season and pre season work and are more concerned with going out and having a good time than putting in the work needed to succeed.

Sorry to hop on my soap box. This is insulting to the entire fan base. The current economy sucks. most of us are working multiple jobs for penny's just to tread water and still not really making it. We turn to our NFL team for a distraction from the stresses of everyday life. Then we watch a group of MILLIONAIRES go out with a ho-hum attitude and piss all over us fans. I don't expect my team to be a superbowl powerhouse but I do expect professionals that get paid millions of dollars to be competent and competitive. Is that really asking too much? We need to stop supporting this abomination of a team, THEY SUCK, flat out! the worse part is, they don't seem to care. I guess they are getting paid regardless of the results so why be invested, right? Well, why are we invested in supporting them?
just a rough game. However, I did see some good progression from Anthony today. He was checking it down to the running back a few times which he did not do in game 1. I think the coaches will figure s*** out. Things will get better. The offense will definitely get better.

Wrong there is a big difference between spending and wasting. You still need to keep your core and best players and in order to do that you must have the money plus needed additions you couldn't secure or fill, plus people may want rIses or restructured contracts You might want to look at Gus and Partridge. Also as most of these players have proven they can play. It's funny how last year with 4 weeks remaining the Colts were just one game away from not just the division but the playoffs and that was when stroud was trying to place as the next rookie phenom. It's funny how many of you need one man as a scape goat lol. When it's a building full of people who work together. Just remember you type of fans are the reason Luck didn't comeback, this is not my opinion but the words of TY one of Lucks best friends.

There is still a lot of season to be played, so I don’t want to be over dramatic. However, I can’t get over how terrible the defense has been. I think it easily could turn around and be solid at least, but I don’t really see that happening.
This is now our 3rd season with Gus Bradley. He has had nothing but excuses on his side. 2022 nothing worked for any unit on this team. 2023 corner was extremely thin, 2024 secondary is an issue. I’m tired of the excuses. Do your job. You knew Jordan Love would be out and the Packers would heavily rely on the running game. You jsut had to stack the box or blitz. If you could stop the run you would’ve won decisively. Instead, you knew it was coming every play but we gave up a first down damn near every play.
Gus Bradley has shown he is stubborn and unwilling to adapt. He still runs his system from a decade ago. He severely limits the ceiling of this team. At best, the very best, the defense can be middle of the pack. There is talent, it feels like it is getting held back because of terrible coaching.
Ballard also deserves a good portion of the blame. At the end of last season we were saying the 3 biggest priorities for this team, Fire Gus Bradley because we know he is average at best, upgrade the secondary because it is a bottom 5 unit, give AR weapons. We kept Bradley, so that one wasn’t done. We got AD, but since he is a rookie he hasn’t shown up much. As for the secondary 1 move Ballard made 1 singular move. What was that move? Resigning Kenny Moore. Important yes, but not adding a corner or safety at all besides that. Every time he was asked “we like our guys”. 0 veteran moves, 3 draft picks in the secondary. Charles switched to linebacker, Simpson is on the practice squad, Abraham is gone.
Blackmon and Juju missing this game hurt us. You don’t have control over injuries, but we could’ve helped that we had almost 0 depth behind those guys. Our secondary is a second year 7th rounder as our outside cb1, Kenny in the slot, and a bird line practice squad player on the other side. A 3rd year 7th round saftey and a very young and raw guy who has been inconsistent at best in a nick Cross. The entire fan base could see that the secondary needed work, but Ballard was too stubborn to do what we all could see.
Like I said there is a lot of season left to be played, but I really have no hope. Bradley clearly limits our defenses potential. Samson already is on IR, Juju is on IR, Buckner seems to be hurt. This season is feeling like 2022 where absolutely nothing goes right.
You don't suppose the players have personal reasons against their higher ups to purposefully suck do you? Especially these guys that have been with us for a minute. Maybe they're just deflated themselves because they can't get help from anybody so they're not showing up 100%.
Why? Ballard and his off-season moves and draft picks. Bradley and his play calling. Suck it up. It is what it is.

AR couldn't even stand in huddle last few plays and snapped ball with under 3 in play clock several times because he walked back to huddle. Dude was dying out there and is out of shape. Steichan can't run rpos because AR will get hurt, can't have a quick game cause AR is too inaccurate and franchise is stuck with this guy telling everyone how great he is trying to convince themselves. Yes D is bad but packers only scored 16.
