Cosmic Journeys - Supervolcanoes

  • They are eruptions so vast, so Earth-shattering, they have changed the history of our planet. Climate collapse. Toxic turmoil. Mass extinction. Worse than a killer asteroid, or nuclear war, they are Earth's most destructive Supervolcanoes.
    North America, the time was six hundred and forty thousand years ago, long before humans arrived on the continent. Amid one of nature's great mountain building projects, the Rockies, vast columns of smoke began to rise high into the atmosphere. And soon a smokey haze wrapped the globe.
    A thick blanket of ashe spread over the western United States. Geologists have traced this event to a depression in the land known as a caldera, in the heart of Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming. Today, we venture to Yellowstone to admire its spectacles of steam and boiling mud.
    Visitors to Yellowstone may never suspect they are atop one of the world's largest active volcanoes.
    The last time it blew, it sent an estimated 1000 cubic kilometers of dirt, rocks, ashe, dust, and soot into the atmosphere. But that's small compared to Earth's largest super volcanoes. Find out what made Toba, Siberian Traps, Deccan Traps and other super eruptions so powerful.

    RUclips is REAL clickbait. I could easily spend the rest of my life watching the amazing videos that people have submitted/created. Without knowing it at the time I was raised in a supervolcanic caldera (Taupo). I was fascinated as child by volcanoes and associated phenomena. I climbed many of them in the region. I enjoyed watching some of the drilling of the Wairakei geothermal field (my dad, a science teacher at the college) had some great connections.

    Yellowstone really should be classified as a MegaVolcano!

    • @justinbiggs1005
      @justinbiggs1005 6 лет назад +1

      The Disabled Gamer I'd say a megavolcano would likely be vei 9 or vei 10. Equivalent of 10,000 and 100,000 cubic kilometers of ejecta. Yellowstone pumped out 2,700 in its largest eruption. Volcanoes of vei 9 and 10 do exist but vei 9 and 10 don't exist on a scale. I'd say flood basalt eruptions would fit the category. Since the vei scale is logarithmic. Yellowstone would be a vei 8.27. Still very deadly.

      Indeed.

    • @justinbiggs1005
      @justinbiggs1005 6 лет назад +1

      @@TheDisabledGamersChannel came back to my comment to realize just how big of an understatement I just made. Flood basalt eruptions are far bigger than I just stated. The Siberian traps eruption ejected over 4 million cubic kilometers of material. Ongtong java was an undersea flood basalt which ejected about 100 million cubic kilometers of material. Oh how big of an understatement I just made. Sometimes I wonder if the only purpose of science is to scare you to the very core. Lol

    • @TheDisabledGamersChannel

    If "HYPER"-Volcano such as Siberian Traps / Permian Extinction happen again, human should live on another planet because Earth will looks like a Venus for 10-20 millions of years.

    • @viper100200
      @viper100200 10 лет назад

      So how did Earth become not like Venus? Biological activity? Why can't be just do that to Venus to make it not like Venus?

    • @ErnestJay88
      @ErnestJay88 10 лет назад

      viper100200 because we live on "Goldilocks" zone, after fiery days our Earth will cool itself and become habitable again.

    • @viper100200
      @viper100200 10 лет назад

      I understand the Goldilocks zone I'm wondering what the mechanism is you're proposing that turns a planet from Venus to Earth.

    • @ErnestJay88
      @ErnestJay88 10 лет назад

      viper100200 i said "looks like" and not "become a Venus" because Venus didn't have magnetic field and continental plate, it also didn't have proper "cooling mechanism" (temperature on Venus pole only slightly cooler than the equator, no ocean to absorb heat.)

    • @viper100200
      @viper100200 10 лет назад

      I guess since you said we would have to leave the planet to survive you were implying conditions would be similar to that of Venus (ie oceans would boil). Also, the cooling mechanism that the earth's crust has (via plate tectonics) has nothing to do with the cooling of the planet's atmosphere. Which was always my question.

    2nd taal volcano, if you passed gr 3 then you should know this. Taal volcano is a part of the 10 most active volcanoes.
    This is sorrounded by taal lake this can erupt half of tagaytay city.
    And 3rd of all mount pinatubo, this volcano is mentioned here and like it says its one of the most super volcanoes.
    I'm lucky I'm not in USA but let us all pray that this will erupt when were all dead because this 2014 in the philippines only a 7.3 earthquake will hit the capital city of philippines. ;( I live there;(

    As a supplement to this, you should take what simulations were done from Yellowstone and the data from Pinatubo (sp?) and apply it to Iceland's recent volcanic activity that did a number on air travel across the Atlantic. Ash, smoke, debris, etc. It wasn't a super volcano but it can show how destructive and disruptive any eruption can be.

    You know, Yellowstone gets a lot of attention, but it's not even the biggest one in North America. Long Valley is like the second-largest one on the damn planet, and it's a much bigger tourist destination than Yellowstone. More people go to Mammoth Mountain every year than Yellowstone, like 8 major population centers are within 200 miles of Long Valley, it's right next to one of the most dangerous and active fault zones on the planet, it's more active than Yellowstone, and scientists have NO idea what keeps the system running. It's bigger, badder, and it's listed with a higher Threat Potential than Yellowstone.

    • @RythmoScotian
      @RythmoScotian 9 лет назад +2

      that doesnt make any sense, a super volcano like this would be much worse than the effects of global warming. this could cause a volcanic winter lasting for years with many species of plants and animals going extinct. global warming is causing sea levels to rise, and some increased storm activity, which threatens our coastal cities, but would not cause mass extinction. im just saying...

    Probably a stupid idea otherwise someone would've thought of it: but why can't we pump magma out of the magma chambers thus alleviating the pressure so the volcano doesn't erupt. I know it probably is impossible, but can someone explain to me why that would be impossible. Or would it just be too expensive?

      That's actually a pretty cool idea. But why i think it can't be done is mainly because it's impractical. Just try to imagine how much magma we're talking about. Where would we put it and how would we get it there? Digging large pools around volcano valleys might sound like a good idea, so we could do some "blood letting" of magma to reduce pressures. But pretend we could actually pump magma out from the earth - it's a risky business messing around with such immense pressures. One could also argue it's part of the earth's natural cycle and shouldn't be tampered with, though we do it every day anyway... And yeah, money.

      I agree with whyhatestrangers and would add that equipment capable of performing such a thing would have to be created then where would the mountain of material go? Dont forget it cant go very far because its cooling becoming more viscous.

      the amount of magma you would have to move would be incredible, also take into consideration that almost as soon as you remove that magma the earth will basically refill it.

      This is actually something that many people have proposed over the lifetime of geology. But basically, it's a verrry dangerous thing to do. Imagine you have a pressurized deodorant spray can. Poke a hole in it. Not a good idea. Now imagine that you poke a hole in it while holding it over a fire. Terrible idea. Now, imagine poking twenty thousand gallons worth of pressurized cans with a fire poker, whilst they are rotating over a fire that can melt steel. This isn't even close to the outcome of trying to channel magma. It's just a very horrendously dangerous thing to do. Making one teeny route to the surface could potentially break a small continent if you do it wrong.

      +frisianmouve *i know this comment is a year old* now imagine just letting any of that magma/ now lava leak out, or a terrible accident occurs, lots of deaths could occur if something terrible would happen, its a shame we cant just wear latex gloves and pick up the lava, or spray liquid nitrogen on our bodies :(, god us humans are so pitiful

    What about the Volcano Eruption in New Zealand, wiping out some of the native animals, leaving a big crater (Lake Taupo) with the suit clouds reaching China?

    Could harvesting geothermal energy help stabilize those areas?

      Cees Timmerman sorry for the late reply. I haven't found this video until now. I believe we can stabilize areas on the scale of Yellowstone and toba. Volcanoes are merely a way for earth to release heat energy. However we would need huge geothermal plants to do so. Assuming the hotspot doesn't move. Which they do very slowly. Stabilizing a large igneous province from a mantle plume or a superplume would be impossible. They are just too vast to stabilize. The only way they stabilize is by eruption.
