This is just lovely. Parrots are such special companions.
h4ns Just thought I'd correct you. He currently now as a Aviary, that small cage was only around for the first month while we build a new home for him, in saying this, he only sleeps, and eats there, and when he wants to play with his toys, apart from that he has free range of the house and free flight training is in practice. He also now has another bird friend and they get along just great. I hope this make you happy.
+Devante Nevels ??
how did you train mikey so he wouldn't fly away???
+h4ns Thank you for your comment. Between myself and my partner we are nearly always home so Mikey gets as much love and attention as possible, we even take turns going out so there's always someone home before he goes to sleep. The odd days someone isn't home a laptop is in his room playing all of his favourite shows, he has his own room with an aviary in it filled with toys to keep him busy. We will eventually get another one so he has a friend and we understand the commitment. Thank you for your concern.
The_Blue_Fox Mikey loves just being on me, when we are out 95% of the time I can't even get him off me, I do have a small harness just incase something scares him and flys into a bus, he has flown away before, just into the nearest tree, he explores for a few hours then will eventually come down. My latest video is from last week when he few up a tree, not a lot of footage but a full description of it.
Just in case you didn't know or for anyone else starting out with birds. It's generally best to avoid stroking along the back and under the wings as they think it's an advance for mating. It will bring you really close for a while but the bird may become aggressive towards anyone who isn't the "mate" and will eventually become frustrated when you can't "deliver". It's generally best to stick to neck and head scritches so you don't end up with an anti-social or sexually frustrated bird. Just a tip! You've made tonnes of progress for a month!
Already noted. Thank you for the advice
How old is mikey the macaw tho
Geno ....I was just about to say the same thing. It's called Hormonal Behavior.

Thanks for the advice. I have a pineapple conure and I don’t recall doing that but I’m getting a cockatiel today and once he is tamed I will be sure not to do that 😂

Same!! Lol.,
this video is so pure :'D
All this like and trust after only 1 month!? I thought it would take half a year for an adult animal to accept and like a new owner.
Planci Acanthaster He was only 9 months when we got him, he wasn't fond of us for the first week but with persistence and commitment to taking the odd nip with caring and love he bonded a lot faster than expected
Large parrots average 8 owners in their lives. That's sad. The younger the bird the easier it is to bond. If they are in a one bird household they will bond more quickly and deeply also, The older the bird the more baggage and bad habbits just like with people. After decades with my macaw we still reach new levels of trust occasionaly.
Brian Bassett Yeah, my macaw Kernel had been through 3 owners before me. We've been together 14 years now. He was pretty nippy at first, for several months. Petting him with his own dropped long feathers helped, and I first offered him the top of my head because he couldn't get a grip on my scalp with his beak, and gradually he started preening my hair. Now he's completely lovable (except for a few pissed-off days after I trim his claws!)
I actually pay a "professional" to clip my baby's nails for a couple reasons.... one I don't like her to see me as a source of pain and two in case there is an accident and she starts to bleed. It scares me too much.

The cleaning of the teeth I cringed but smiled at the same time 😂😂😂😅
Blue Marshmallow Bunny Agreed, however without the smiling part. Human saliva has a bacteria that can kill birds so it’s very iffy to let him do that. Even the nose is something that should not be rewarded. The ear is okay though.
L S wdym bacteria? When we French kiss does that shit goes into others??
@@LS-oh8kv yeah that's what I was thinking
寂しいコールド Well it does yeah, but it’s the same bacteria in all humans mouth. To us it’s neutral bacteria but it’s very bad for birds.
This comment made me cringe !! 😂😂 But then I smiled LMFAO!!!!

LOL. There are bottle openers shaped like parrots. No kidding.
I love this relationship you have with your Blue and gold Macaw i getting one very soon . she will be weaned off soon in 6 weeks can't wait to get her I hope to have a close relationship with my Macaw like this
As a long time owner, I always recommend that people don't get Macaws. They require, they deserve way more attention than most owners can offer. The average parrot has 8 owners in its life time. That's not right.
Brian Bassett ...yes, it's really a bigger commitment than a child (kids eventually leave home!) And we have to make arrangements for when we die, since macaws live so long! How horrible to spend years and years with a loving owner and THEN start getting passed around!
Just take care of it. Keep it truly happy
@PeachiiBun It's a world of choices Ms. Anonymous
Parrots are Drama Queens and need lots of attention or they become Screamers. Their screaming is really very loud and goes on for a long time, and can make neighbors complain.
Macaw parrots are amazing. They are loud and possessive.
Once adopted, they will be your loyal friend for a very long time... about 50 years.
I love this video!!!

Hi!:) Your birdie is nothing short of amazing!!!!!!! One question: how is it posible to take him out in the street? Aren't you worried he could fly away in any moment? Thankssssss!!!!
I love this video and I love Mikey... and LOVE his name! Hahaha! Keep up with the great videos!
Hahah, we love that you love Mikey. Hopefully one day Mikey can meet Mikey. Just imagine the antics haha
I came across your videos and very much enjoyed them, except for Mikey's accident video, so I wanted see how things began and am now enjoying this one. You and your partner and your two beautiful Macaws have some of the most beautiful vlogs I have ever watched. I love all animals and from the time I was a little girl I wanted a parrot. Sadly I have let too many years pass and I would be long gone before the bird and that would be just wrong. I just survived a three year cancer ordeal and am happily cancer free right now. My 3 daughters are grown and I live with my two adopted cats Charlie a Maine Coon Mix and Sophie a short haired Persian. They are two real characters, and very gentle and loving. I have been doing a bit of research on possibly getting a couple of Budgies, their life span is much better suited for my age 61. I think that is how I originally came across your videos. I am retired and have all the time in the world to make sure the cats who are getting older and the budgies could have a safe relationship. I am just not sure so for now I will continue to watch videos about budgies and of course I love all bird and other animal videos. I have many of yours to catch up on. I am glad Mikey is doing OK and I wish you and your better much love and success. God Bless

OMG, I am dying here from laughter! The David Attenborough-esque commentary is brilliant!
So lovely to see the loving relationship between Mikey and its owners.... Mikey is so loving and not to mention that he is beautiful !

Greetings from Washington DC USA ... I am a huge fan of your vlogs.... looking forward to seeing more of Mikey. Nicki.
The Goddess Awww thanks Nikki, we really do appreciate people stopping by the channel and we make these videos to make people smile so we really do hope we achieved that with you. We are currently working on a new Mikey Music Video so stay tuned.

The owners treat him so good. They let him fly.
That is very very problematic!
I scrolled back to your first video and I absolutely love this level of wholesomeness
Mikey and his family are so lucky to have each other!
Rose Brand We are the lucky ones to have him. He is very special
Mikey goes all up in the nose with the grooming lol 😂so adorable 🖤😂
Lovely Cheech he is very thorough
Awww such a loving owner! Let me toss you a suggestion though. Please please PLEEEASE don't touch a bird on its body or under its wings. In the bird world, that is foreplay. It screws with their brains and can cause territorial behavior which in macaws can mean finger loss.
Source: am a bird vet assistant
Altariasong thank you for the advice.
Nimal Fernando No problem! I just want to make sure you and Mikey stay best friends forever and not let those pesky hormones get in the way of a beautiful friendship! 😄
I have a budgie whom i pet her stomach... Does this count? (Please Answer ASAP so i know if to do it or not)
The Lonely Lakitu Hmm, budgies are not usually hormonal if you pet them on their stomachs. Under wings and on back is rather off limits tho. If you see your birdie get low to the ground and/or droop her wings, then that's a sign that she's interpreting it sexually. If she's not doing any of that, then I think you're fine. 😄
she runs on the bottom of the cage alot.
wow, very cuddly bird..congrats bro.
Swaps for quaker parrot. Comes pre loaded with swears.
big birds are JUST amazing ... i have a large cockatoo, very aggressive and wild, but lately is very lovely and friendly (only with me unfortunately) ... They are demanding, loud, dramaqueen, but very rewarding ...! a BIG challenge. Once they love you , they are just amazing and attached to you. Very smart and intuitive.

On the first month?!
I have the Same Macaw and she doesn't even perch on my shoulder nor arm yet.
xDidntRememberMuch Haha I know this feeling. With Mikey, we couldn't even touch him for the first 3 days, mainly in fear on our end thinking he would bite off our hands lol. One night I had many many beers, my confidence was strong, went up, put out my hand and he jumped on, he crawled up onto my shoulder, it was terrifying. After that progress happened very very fast, he knew he could trust us and he was happy with everything we did with him. I also think we got him when he was 9 months old from a guy who basically just kept him in a cage. I feel he was grateful for the freedom and adventures he does with us. I'll do my best to post another video soon with an update as it's been 7months now. I think the key is don't be nervous, take the bites and pretend like they do not affect you at all haha. Good luck.
Nimal Fernando
Lucky, I'm the only one in my family who is more confident with our Bird. When she sees me, she starts moving her head up and down. It's hilarious haha.
Hey, I'm back with a couple more suggestions for your wonderful bird's safety! These things may have been said before so I apologize if I say something that's already been said. When I worked for the bird vet, you would not believe how many lost bird posters we had because someone was outside with their bird without a harness on the bird. Even the most calm and docile bird can get spooked and fly off. Mikey looks like a parrot that would have no trouble learning how to wear a harness, and it would give you and others peace of mind to know that he is tethered to you. Plus I bet he'd look adorable in one. (Haha scratch that, I checked your other videos and I see you've got a harnesss for him already, and ge decided to escape! I'm glad everything went well to get him down! I'm now subscribed, looking forward to new videos!) Second, soda and chocolate items are a big no no for birds. I have no idea if the drink in the video is one of those, but it's best to give him fruit juice or perhaps a few sips of sweetened or unsweetened decaffeinated tea. Vanilla ice creams and yogurts and such are fine in small amounts, along with salty things like chips or crackers. Birds need a lot of fruits and vegetables to stay happy and healthy, they should make up around 30% of his diet. And as for the hairdryer, I would call the manufacturer and verify that it does not have any teflon in it, to be sure that you're not accidentally blowing toxins on lil Mikey. Your bond with Mikey is so heartwarming, and I visit your video often so I can smile and laugh. I want you and Mikey to have a long and wonderful life together, so that's why I offer these suggestions. Please let me know if you have any questions and I hope you have a wonderful day!
Altariasong Altariasong Thank you very much for your comment. It's so nice to have people out there that care.
Yes we have always had a harness on him, the full body ones he just chew off after a few days so we just have a small clip on his foot rung which he doesn't seem to mind.
That can in this video was just an example on how he can open a can of beer, he doesn't drink much else apart from water.
We heard the hairdryer was teflon free but just to be safe we have now completely stopped blow drying him, it's not really needed.
As for his diet he eats a lot of fruits, nuts, veggies, seeds etc, the odd Sunday he may have some junk food but not a lot.
We appreciate the comment and support.
If you haven't seen our latest video with him I think you will really like it, trying to make them as entertaining as possible, you will see fruits nuts and veggies so check it out and let me know your thoughts. ruclips.net/video/jtkTorU7Z74/видео.html
Mikey The Macaw & Friends I saw that video, it was really well done! XD Birds are definitely better than babies. You might wanna consider following and forming friendships with other birdie youtube stars like Mr. Max, Gotcha, and Harley. I see them comment on each other's videos a lot, and it definitely helps with visibility and making sure us bird freaks know about ALL the precious featherchildren we can watch on youtube. Thanks for the reply!
I am sure you are well-meaning, but shut up.
Brian Bassett I'd rather say something and get insulted than say nothing and find out that Mikey got sick, injured, or lost.
shut the fuck up
My African grey absolutely loves cheese, noodles anything that I eat tbh 😂
Cheese really isn't good for parrots unless it's cottage cheese
you will kill your parrots if he eats what you eat (except if you only eat fresh fruits and vegetables)
mraeece dairy isn’t good for parrots
skini'min umm no, avocados will kill ur bird
Oh shit wrong person meant the purple dude underneath u
I myself own a Hyacinth Macaw and a Scarlet Macaw, and I don't regret it one bit! They are such beautiful, smart, loyal and loving parrots.
Some Swede Oh wow, amazing. I would love to meet a Hyacinth macaw one day. Sounds amazing.
They're a lot of work, but once you get that out of the way they are such beautiful pets.

Amy Wesgaw Thank you for the kind words, will do our best to keep it up.
Okay 1) I actually thought that first meal on the plate was avocado's and I almost screamed and 2) I can never let my macaw play with my ear, that is so uncomfortable for me!
OMG THIS VIDEO!
I can't believe this is just after a month! I just got a 2 year old conure a little more than a week ago and he's still a bit scared and won't come out of his cage when we open it. I put my hand by the entrance/bottom of the cage and talk to him but he still freaks out a bit, and I haven't had the chance to handle him yet. (I don't want to take him out by force!) Seems like I haven't made any progress with him. Do you have any tips or suggestions? I'm curious as to how you trained your macaw so well!
Lai L Thanks for the comment. In my experience small birds are always harder than big ones. With Mikey he just stayed in his cage for the first few days, then eventually started stepping up on a stick, the moment he would step up on us we started taking him for walks around so he knew he would have fun, in saying this Mikey also knows he’s a big bird and could cause damage with his beak so wasn’t overly afraid of us where I feel smaller birds get much more scared and take a lot longer. The only tip I can give you is be patient and don’t force him, every time he gets close to you give him a treat, they need to know your hands are a good place. I don’t know a whole lot about birds but that makes sense in my head haha
Just give your bird time
Not all birds are the same
Damn, this video has been on youtube for a year now and only now I am watching it. I must say I was very entertained!
