I’ve been following Rick for literally decades, since the late 70s in Sacramento, CA. He’s always surrounded himself with top sidemen (and women). When Charlie retired, breaking up an incredible musical duo, Kid was a great alternative - not replacement. While Kid is a truly talented player and a fantastic showman, even he would bow to Charlie’s incredible virtuosity on the many occasions he would sit in before his untimely passing. But there is one thing that nobody can even come close to Rick with and that’s style. Rick is the bluesman’s bluesman, and it’s not an act or schtick - it’s real and he lives it. The pompadour, the ducktail, the suits, the gators, the voice and intonation… Rick is silky smooth. I used to see him at a famous store that specialized in clothing for pimps, loan sharks, hustlers and rockstars. The old dude that owned it had no voice from a knife fight and you had to be “admitted”, like a speakeasy. Rick in his youthful prime was easily the poster boy of smooth fashion and even now could teach modern wannabees a thing or two about smooth style. Hollywood is missing him as a perfect character actor for one of those roles!
