      the first thing I thought when watching videos of reviewers complaining of the open storage and not hiding their crap, is that as an open storage, large purses and small bags will fit in there securely while still flowing out. Can't do that in a closed storage area. Smart, imo.

    Thanks for the comparison video. I also happen to have Kona EV which is coming up on lease this year. I have the Ultimate trim but looks like if I'm not mistaken, the torque on the new one is less. The previous gen was 201hp and 295lbtq. Also my range since day one had been between 280-302miles and of course more fluctuation in the winter as I'm also in snow country. Bigger size is huge help especially with a car sear which makes the front passenger seat almost unusable. I have been getting about 4.2kwh with the higest I saw was 5.3kwh which was of course city driving.

    I like the normal buttons and knobs on the Kona. I’d consider the N if it comes in AWD. I’m also waiting for the 2025 I5 mostly for the NACS port, but they are finally advertising some good deals on the Ionic 5 here in the Portland Oregon area, so the 2024 is a little tempting.

    I had the radar cruise fail on my Ioniq5 and got an Ioniq6 as a stand by car. I actually couldn't wait to give it back. It was claustrophobic as you said my knees had no room to move with high centre console. I'm glad you bring it up as the Kona seems to be better but they could do the open footwell and be as good as the 5. We nearly bought a new outlander phev but those centre consoles just keep getting wider and taller. Just stupid. Keeping old outlander maybe with battery upgrade. Hoping new Kia ev 5 will have lots of room up front. Love your reviews

    Still recommend to others in this price range who live in cold climates the Niro EV over the Kona since Hyundai hates specifically the US for whatever reason and wont let you get a heat pump for improved efficiency. Heck, its not even a North America market problem as Canada has had the heat pump in the Kona EV for years now.

    • @bnovak2937
      @bnovak2937 4 месяца назад

      Yeah, I wonder how much range you might lose driving a Kona in cold weather without a heat pump. British versions have heat pump, why not US? ☹️

    • @AdamPranda
      @AdamPranda 4 месяца назад +1

      @@bnovak2937 From previous experience driving a Bolt EV, which doesn't have a heat pump, the steady state difference in power draw is ~1-4kW depending on the temperature. So for longer drives the efficiency difference will be more pronounced. As for the US trim differences, it's always been about the profit margin. Hyundai cuts a ton of features here to try to be competitive on price, rather than options/features. Kia is significantly more competitive on features but is slightly more expensive, but at least you are given the option to choose.

    What's the charging curve for this model year 2024 Kona Electric? Its max 100 kW charging speed, how long is it maintained in ideal conditions? eg, for a brief period , say around 50-60% SOC, or longer, say 20-70%?

    • @colinsullivan8416
      @colinsullivan8416 4 месяца назад

      Teslabjorn has videos showing the charging performance. It’s pretty good! It starts at 90Kw below 10% SOC and slowly creeps up higher and higher as the battery pack voltage increases. Its true peak is at 63% SOC at 100kw or slightly above. So you can think of it as basically flat 90-100kw all the way to 63%. Then it drops to 79Kw until it reaches 69%. Above that it drops below 50Kw.
      All this to say is that they are emphasizing the wrong charging time in their marketing materials. It’s 10-80% in 43 min, but 10-70% in just 27min. 16 extra minutes for the extra 10 percent is a waste in my opinion. Get back in the road at 70 and you’ll spend overall less time charging over multiple stops.

    • @be236
      @be236 4 месяца назад

      Nice! That's a great improvement over its older model, where it would only get to its max 76kW for maybe 50-60% SoC period...before or after that it was well under 50kW...

    I had a 2019 Kona EV Ultimate that I loved it until it was bought back due to battery fire issues. My biggest issue remains - I don't want a car with FWD and EV torque as the power delivery is uneven and torque steer is annoying. Having now lived with both 2023 Model 3 RWD and a 2021 Polestar 2 (AWD/Dual Motor), I just can't ever see going back to FWD. I am curious how this stacks up to the Volvo EX30. On paper, the Volvo seems significantly better in most areas with the notable exception of rear seat/cargo space. I am glad to see Hyundai improve the Kona - I just really wish they would give it RWD/AWD.

    As a Model Y owner, I rented a 23 Kona electric last week. It is an electric car for people who want a traditional car experience. It had poor 1 pedal experience. I do not understand the preference for all the buttons. The lane keep assist worked great on a straight road but would disconnect on curves.
    It would be interesting to compare the gas version of the Kona to the electric version.
    The Kona electric limited is $41K. The Tesla Model Y RWD with heated memory seats, Autopilot, and dashcam, is $37K (with the $7500 credit - which you can use as a down payment).
    Is Hyundai offering the $7500 off at the time of purchase (like Tesla/GM), or do you have to lease?

      One pedal operation is dumb. Tesla is too dumb to blend braking. All you are doing is using your motor to stop and hold the car. In contrast, the kona will use brakes to hold you and do low speed stops.
      And no, needing to use the touchscreen to open the glove box will always be stupid.

    • @ericgregori
      @ericgregori 4 месяца назад

      @@sprockkets@sprockkets I use speech recognition to open the glove box (you can also open the glovebox from the steering wheel buttons). I have not needed to open the glovebox since I bought the car. "One-pedal driving extends the brake life of the vehicle, battery range, and overall performance of the car, especially when paired with the “eco” mode.
      One-pedal driving helps your brakes last longer because you’re not using them much. EVs use regenerative braking like hybrids and plug-in hybrids and capture the kinetic energy typically lost while coasting and braking. When using a single pedal to accelerate, decelerate, and stop the car, it grabs the excess energy and sends it to the battery, helping to extend the range of your EV.
      An EV driver can recapture about 5% of the energy and an additional 13 miles to the estimated range when using one-pedal driving, depending on terrain, temperature, and more.
      Using one-pedal driving can relieve some of the stress of driving since you’re focusing on one pedal instead of two, but it can also initially be a drawback because it’s an adjustment in how you typically drive." - energy_gov
      "The Model S, and all subsequent cars from Tesla maker do things differently. Lift off the accelerator pedal and regenerative braking begins immediately; hit the brake pedal and you activate a traditional hydraulic circuit. I talked with Hearst Autos vehicle testing director Dave Vanderwerp about this, and he suggests that Tesla takes this approach as it provides a more natural brake pedal feel-blended pedals can often feel springy underfoot, as there’s no direct connection between the pedal itself and the hydraulic circuit ...." - RoadandTrack.
      "On the road, these two are even Steven! One of the reasons EVs are as efficient as they are is the ability they have to recapture energy via regenerative braking. This enables one-pedal driving that uses the motors to slow the vehicle as opposed to the brakes, so you rarely have to bother hitting the brake pedal. The Tesla excels here. "I am a diehard one-pedal driver," Evans said, "and I just plain like the way Tesla does it better." Example: You're driving down the street and you see a yellow or red light. In a normal car, you lift off the throttle and then begin modulating the brake pedal. The Model Y is programmed in such a way that simply lifting means you'll come to a complete stop at the same spot you would have by using the brake pedal. The Hyundai, on the other hand, does not come to a complete stop in time on its own, its regenerative braking being sometimes difficult to judge. Moreover, and unlike the Tesla, you have to remember to put the Ioniq 5 into high regen mode (by pulling the left steering-wheel paddle) every time you get in and drive." - MotorTrend

    • @sprockkets
      @sprockkets 4 месяца назад +1

      @@ericgregori You realize that only tesla has that problem, I don't have a spongy brake pedal.
      And if you think having the glove compartment open with a button is the only stupid thing Tesla does, I can also post a wall of sht too with what they do.
      It's like you think I don't have control of 4 levels of regen with my Kia, vs none with yours (they killed any control in newer cars).

    • @ericgregori
      @ericgregori 4 месяца назад

      @@sprockkets Your opinion is not relevant. I am posting quotes for the other people reading this. opinions != facts
      Tesla allows for two levels of regenerative breaking:
      "Tesla has released software version update notes on 2023.12.9 . The update is being rolled out in batches and includes features such as the ability to adjust the regenerative braking intensity."
      "Choose from two levels:
      Standard: Provides the maximum amount of regenerative braking. When you release the accelerator, Model S slows down.
      Low: Limits regenerative braking. When you release the accelerator, Model S takes longer to slow down and coasts farther than if set to "Standard". - Tesla
      In addition to the regen modes, you can adjust the stopping modes:
      "CREEP: When close to, or at, a complete stop, the motor continues to apply torque, moving Model S slowly forward (in Drive) or backwards (in Reverse), similar to a conventional vehicle with an automatic transmission. In some situations, such as on a steep hill or driveway, you may need to press the accelerator pedal to continue moving or to prevent Model S from moving in the opposite direction."
      "HOLD: Maximizes range and reduces brake wear by continuing to provide regenerative braking at speeds lower than with the Creep and Roll settings. When Model S stops, the brakes are automatically applied without you having to put your foot on the brake pedal. Whether stopped on a flat surface or a hill, Vehicle Hold keeps the brake applied, provided your foot remains off the accelerator and brake pedals. See Vehicle Hold."
      "ROLL: When close to, or at, a complete stop, Model S becomes free rolling like a vehicle in Neutral. Therefore, if stopped on a slope, Model S will roll downward. The brake does not engage, and the motor does not apply torque (until the accelerator pedal is pressed)."
      As you can tell from the data, none of your statements about Tesla are actually true. However, you do need to push a button to open the glove compartment, just like in some BMWs and Mercedes.

    • @TheIoniqGuy
      @TheIoniqGuy  4 месяца назад

      All Ioniq 5s actually also have a resistance heater. The heat pump only works down to a certain point where it begins to slowly not work as efficiently and then the resistance heater will compensate. The resistance heater will also be used on startup to rapidly heat the cabin and then transition to the heat pump to maintain

    • @leslarson2642
      @leslarson2642 4 месяца назад

      Correct and I understand the limitations of heat pumps. Basically, once the ambient temperature drops below a certain temperature, say 10F, a heat pump is no better than a resistive heater, losing its thermal advantage. But the heat pump still produces heat, which is added to the resistive heater. If there is only a resistive heater, it better be really large to compensate for the lack of the heat pump. Like I have said, I have seen almost 7 kW on my climate display. That is a lot of power. Thanks for the reply.
