When the SHTF what good will gold be? You wont be able to pat me with gold, I can't eat it, drink it, wear it, build a house with it, keep the house warm with it, so its worthless to me.
Happy fathers day Heath! So glad that there fathers like you to encourage their kids to be part of the honest, hard working generation that is in short supply and long demand! Keep up the good work sir!
Something good to know. A 2×6 can carry 53lbs per linear foot on edge according to the Building Codes. Longitudinally it will support 662 to 998lbs as a column, or 7061lbs sheathed and blocked in a wall as a stud before buckling. Flat-face up, a 2×6 is rated for 4lbs per linear foot before deflection, although it will support more weight. Your shelves can support a car. 😉
We made QR codes taped to the ends of the boxes. We took a photo of what was in the box then linked to Google drive. Scan the code with your phone and up pops a photo or list or both of what on in the box. Search the Google sheet in your drive to find what box an item is in. A lot of work for a lot of junk.
most parents keep the life and times of their kids growing up my wife have done this, as our kids have grown up and moved away to start their journey through adult hood they have never even ask or want to see the memories growing up. their kids will do the same. then comes the day when we are no longer on this earth all get thrown out as rubbish.
For others maybe considering this type of project, I found using a furniture dolly (Harbor Freight $13-18) for each stack of totes on the bottom is really helpful. They hold up to 1000 lbs so go 3, 4, (maybe 5) totes high on the bottom row. Need a tote or stack of totes, pull them out, move around or pull off the tote you want (easy). You do loose about 6" in height but sure makes moving them around easy on the bottom row. Heath's 4, 3, 2, 2 high as you go up (or 5, 2, 2, 2).
At a sales 'team bldg' event at 40+ strained my hammy between 1st n 2nd, they captured the moment and replayed in slow motion for me later. The mind is willing but the body has other ideas, make the most of it while your body is able in sports or DIY.
Thats some fine looking shelving great work. Reccomend getting Cedar a white paint pen marker so she can write on each tote end whats in it so at a moments glance she knows whats in each from ground level. It looks amazing
Happy fathers day Heath ❤. The shelving looks great. Love the way you always show your learning throughout your projects (when you were stuck between the wall and the shelf), and how you always start whistling when you come to the end of a project and can see the finish line.
We did something similar with the totes. Except it's all my stuff. I'm jack of all trades but a master of none. So I have a bunch of extras of everything. I had my wife cut out some labels on her cricket with the words "electrical" "plumbing" etc. So I know exactly what's in what tote. Just a thought for your set up.
As I was streaming on my tv notice your feeling much better your knees aren't causing pain or backaches...seems like your taking care of yourself 👍 WOW ❤ how RPR looks pleasing to the eye..house rocks landscaped barn/shop... you've done so much in a few years..
I painted my garage with eggshell or Simi , and I love it , it always looks clean , your shop is bigger after you apply the paint , it does looks great beautiful, plus the shelves add in , it does looks amazing. ❤❤❤❤your channel ,
I’m so glad you changed it to a work bench. I seen you doing the left side and was hoping you’d put one on that wall so you have a solid place to tinker and whatnot
Nobody can deny this man's work ethic! I'm new in my homestead journey and have been watching you from nearly the beginning. Watching you first build the house then garage and continuously improve the land is inspiring. Looking forward to seeing what you do with the new property and continue to do with what you have already done.
No question at all that Heath works long and hard hours on his projects. Unfortunately he seldom works smart, witness using a leaf blower to clean the shop but not wearing a mask when the video shows how much hangs in the air. He also often justifies errors or outright omissions.
@@68Jaguar420G walk a mile in his shoes, it's easy to Monday morning quarterback. If you are documenting your homestead journey please leave a link, I am always interested in how others are doing it. As for me, I live in a completely different environment(rocky mt high desert) which requires a little different tactic but it is always nice to see the big picture.
My grandparents use to have a house in Wyoming and they use to get hummingbirds in their tall garage all the time, my grandfather had a adjustable paint pole with a fishing net on the end and we use to catch them and release.
I would suggest (if you haven’t already thought of it yourself), on the ground level of the shelving, making heavy duty boards or metal plates on casters for your much heavier equipment. This will help your back … long term. Will be easier to move around for whichever area you are working at in the workshop. It’s looking so so good - I’m impressed.
With his skills he also could make a portable workbench using the same material. I bought a cart and I put the tools I use the most on the bottom and work on top of it. That way I am not running back and forth for the right size wrench, socket, hammer, etc etc. 👍
The Laws of Nature, are apparently that, stored items always expand to a fixed percentage larger than the available space. You can never get ahead of that game.
You could add shelves between the outer and the wall uprights on either side of your tool box to store spray cans and other chemicals in a bookshelf arrangement that face either side of box and use what looks like it may be dead space.
Beautiful shelving system. Before you decided to put in a work bench I was yelling at you in my head... workbench workbench!!! LOL Glad to see you realized what an opportunity you had there. How's the road and the hill side coming along. Those seem pretty darn important to get fixed ASAP. I'd hate to see some huge rains come and wash away your home. Be safe and hope we get another one in a few days!!
build cabinet doors around cedars corner with the one for the window be able to maybe slide for when have window open for air. but you know you will have a lot of dust from projects :) helps keep the wife happy and protects the stuff from dust and more air.
We had a problem with the hummingbirds getting into the garage and not being able to get out. Put the feeder at a lower level outside the door visible to the bird high inside. They will go out quickly.
I think your new shelves turned out great…your perfection skills have made another project very special! Happy Father’s Day Heath! You are one of the hardest working men on u-tube!
I saw the solar panels for the pump. This summer would be a good time to bury a power line from the house, add a power supply to replace the solar panels, keep the generator for backup at the well and move the solar panels to the CABIN.
The used metal industrial pallet shelving like Costco uses, I bought used in perfect condition for about the same money as your wood expenditure. Easy to erect and re configure, extremely strong. But can't customize quite as much as you have and it's about double the depth as you built.
I bought the heavy duty rolling carts from a Walmart that had closed. I thought the rollers were gonna be a big plus, but the.shelves hold so much weight there are quite a few I can't move alone. The best thing is there are no sagging shelves.
Good job with the shelving. Did the same in 2 X 20 foot sea containers to use as storage and a workshop. I built mine heavy duty too, to take totes full of parts. It is surprising how much you can store vertically in a small space.
Happy Fathers Day Heath...the shelves look great and Im glad you thought about a workbench b4 you got to far thinking about storage you need that workbench and yes cedar it will be a catch all for his crap he needs but its one small space he can be messy...have a great week guys...😊
We built similar height shelves. However we made 2x4 bases for totes to sit on. We had noticed items stored in the totes when sitting on concrete had taken on a musty kind of smell. Not so now they are off the concrete. An added bonus is ease in cleaning the garage/shop floor. No more dust, etc. getting between and behind totes. A year after building the shelving systems we came across used military grade canvas which we made quasi-curtains hanging down the shelves and keeping dust off them.
You are the Common Man's genius. Plumber, electrician, carpenter, metal worker, welder, mechanic....My family has watched you and your fa.ily since the days of running around in the dust with that little Ford tractor. You are an amazing man, and you deserve some rest.
The shelving looks wonderful and functional. The bracing(particularly workbench area) contrasts well with the white walls. My lazy self would say leave it as is and not paint it.
My garage has similar custom set up and I can tell you this. The area up requiring a ladder is useless with 3 high totes. Takes so much energy and extra work to access bottom totes. Personally would not go higher than 2 on shelves requiring a ladder to access and the higher you go only 1 high. A heavy tote on a ladder to reposition for access is dangerous for me
Love how this turned out. And the fact that you show you reconsidered some ideas along the way. The finish trip indeed makes a lot of difference in look and feel. Great project !
Had the same problem with my wife's 50+ totes. Ended up paint a number on each tote, and making files on the ipad for each tote number. Now she just go's to the tote file number and takes pictures of what is in the tote.
I used slotted, angle iron suspended from the ceiling and only stacked the Rubbermaid boxes 2 high to make access easier. Greatest shelves I ever made!
Good job, Heath! First thought when you went to put up the 2nd shelf was, Don't fall through the window. I don't think there have been any major accidents (that I can remember) in this whole build (from clearing the land to present day) so please don't start now. Hope you had a Great relaxing Father's day!
Have really enjoyed all your videos especially the shop. It looks fantastic! I'm about 70% building a 24x32. The shelves are a little high for me, (I'm only 5'8"), but you are one of a very few persons I've seen who can easily easily look in the top of a double toolbox, or mud a ceiling without a ladder! Thanks for sharing!
Happy Father’s Day! Man the shop looks amazing, it’s crazy how just a few months ago it was packed full of all your stuff and you were cranking out the new plow truck, it’s so different looking, but looks amazing! Great job

It would be cool if you could build a rail ladder like they have in some libraries that slides the length of the shelves
I like that idea!
I was thinking the same thing.
Just posted my comment and then saw yours. Looks like many stupids have the same thoughts 😅😅😅
That’s what I was thinking too.
Or one of those rolling ladder/step thingys like in Home Depot.
Something good to know.

Enclosing the shelves would give a tidy look with everything behind closed doors!👍
Excellent job. You went waaayy above and beyond what any of us expected!
Happy Fathers Day!

Happy Father's day to you and everyone you know is a dad. The shef looks amazing. Glad you listened to your father in law. Seamlessly beautiful!!!
Heath add some led strip lights above your new workbench you'll love the extra light especially in winter, the shelf's look brilliant
Watching Reed run the bases reminded me of my son. Thanks for sharing your wonderful family memories!
Happy Father's day have a great day the shop is looking great 👍
Happy Father’s Day!
Bravo on the shelving!🙌
Heath, you are one handy dude!

Heath…You could put the workbench on locking casters so it could slide out for 360 use and the back into place for stationary use/storage…😁😁😁😁😁😁

Epoxy flooring would look amazing too!👍
You could get a instant camera and take a picture of what in the box and tape it to the outside. That way you know what’s in the box .
You can also print from a cell phone image.
Shelves look great!
I like the wood look without paint
Heath, your hard work has really paid off. The garage/shop looks great! Before and after pictures will amaze even you.
Happy fathers day Heath ❤. The shelving looks great.

Great home run!!

That’s how you run through the stop sign the coach says I love it brings back old memories 😅
Happy Father's Day and the shop is looking fantastic with the shelving you are making 😊.
It is so cool to see you finally finishing the shop up nice, and the work bench, I was just about to reply that you need one there
Turned out really nice and leaves a lot of floor space. Like it!
The shelving looks wonderful and functional. The bracing(particularly workbench area) contrasts well with the white walls. My lazy self would say leave it as is and not paint it.
