    My dad (RIP) bought Ogre Battle on SNES along with the strategy guide while I was a teen in the mid 90's, and I still have them. It was so much fun and we spent many hours playing and planning different strategies for different maps! A few years later, and after my dad passed away, I saw Ogre Battle 64 at a local Target and picked it up. Somehow, I never got around to playing it. It currently sits in my closet, complete in box, next to my quasi complete copy for the SNES (I had to get a repro box but have everything else original). I really need to get around to playing Ogre Battle 64 though.

    • @vmac8200
      @vmac8200 2 года назад +3

      well first of all according to your story... if you have the original game it may be more of a collectors item than something to play., If you want to play it, have it burned onto the Wii U if you can find one. I had EVERY SNES and NES game copied into an A-Z list without ever owning the actual game cartridges. But ogre battle is a collector game at this point if you have the actual copy.

    • @medmuscle
      @medmuscle 2 года назад +2

      @@vmac8200 Yes it's an expensive game nowadays, and I still have the exact same cartridge my dad bought brand new back in 1995. It's a complete copy with the original manual and the other 2 inserts (showing items, classes, etc.) that came with it. But I had to purchase a reproduction box for it (I threw away the original box many years ago....ugggghhh!). As far as actually playing it, I have 3 bootleg discs for my Dreamcast that have almost every SNES game on them and some imports that never came out here in the US too. So my original SNES copy can rest. It's mighty convenient having everything on those 3 discs. I played a lot of Sim City and Civilization on it recently, but I will definitely play Ogre Battle again soon too. It's been many years since I've played it. Ogre Battle is amazing once you get past the learning curve. The game is very deep and very rewarding.
      As far as my N64 copy, I don't have any other way of playing it ATM other than playing my N64 cart.

    • @drowningin
      @drowningin 6 месяцев назад +1

      Don’t open that cart if you haven’t yet. If it’s still sealed Get it graded, and back in the closet. If you aren’t up for selling it yet. An n64 emu can run on anything from the last 20 years

  • @JoshuaRWorkman

    For me, the best part of Ogre Battle 64 was the character building. You could take characters from your pre-made units or promote them from Soldiers and, once they'd reached the stat and/or alignment requirements, provided they weren't of a unique class, you could change their class, possibly changing what weapons and armor they use and, depending on which class, possibly later change them to a more powerful version, such as Paladin, Cataphract, Archmage, Diana, Freya, or Siren. And then there were the special classes which you had to do sidequests to get, I always have two characters marked from the start to become a Dragoon and a Princess, but there are two special undead classes as well, Vampire and Lich. I replay every now and again just for the character and unit building.

    What I really enjoyed were the tactics you could use for encounters. You know the enemies leader is a Wizard, flank them from the side or from behind. This then changed the enemies formation on their 3x3. The Wizard gets put upfront, is more vulnerable, and doesn't get as many attacks. This game was so much fun!

    One of the most memorable moments among many for me was how your beloved characters you fostered over time could become mummies (even more sad is I seem to recall they could return to you this way if they had a strong bond with you) but what’s even more impressive is that there was also ways to restore their humanity(original forms) too. Which is very satisfactory. ❤

    I really appreciate you giving this game that was such a big part of my childhood the spotlight it deserves. I think what's really interesting about this game is that it's one of the only ones I can think of that's "hard to learn but easy to master" just because it has a pretty steep learning curve but once you understand the mechanics you can pretty much breeze through the game. In case someone comes by this comment I should probably let you know that there's an Ogre Battle 64 discord. What's great about it besides the comradery is that it hosts two great mods that completely overhaul the game "Hammer To Fall" and "Shanezell". Both are amazing and breathe some much needed life into this game to the point that it feels like a brand new one but in a good way. I think the most important thing I can say about them is that they're not some 'super hard difficulty mode' but they ultimately change the mechanics within the game. Just for a quick example, the Fencer is no longer this super OP unit you get early on and his attacks are reduced from 3 to 2 per round and magic casters will do 1 AoE spell per round if they're put in the back row but if they're in the middle they'll do 2 single target spells. The changes go on forever and I could talk about this game and it's mods for hours and say pretty much nothing but good things. I think I'll stop here and say I highly recommend both mods if you're a fan big or small and/or you tried the game out and thought it got a bit too easy once you understood the mechanics. I think Hammer To Fall would be the better game to start of with, imo

    I’m playing through the game for the first time right now and am at Chapter 3 Scene 25. Debonaire is not part of my battalion and every unit except my main unit is lawful. I don’t know how it’s going to end but I plan to replay it to experience the different endings. I’m used to the menu system but still haven’t learned how to manage squads or how to keep the alignment in a certain area. I’m learning now that some strongholds shouldn’t be visited because it affects your alignment. The depth of gameplay is more complex than expected which is another thing I wish to understand better the next time through. Overall I like its darker, more mature nature and really don’t mind the anti-aliasing combined with pixel art; it looks like a well drawn ancient story book.

    5:16 the blur you're talking about here is (cranked up) anti-aliasing. This is done in order to bring down the harshness of the jagged "pixelization" on the edges of their geometry. If I had to guess why it's so extreme on character models and cutscene backgrounds is because these are not true 3D models in the engine but rather sprite renders to lower performance costs

    I actually liked the character designs and how smooth they looked, personally. Kinda wish we'd have had tarot cards again as opposed to those elemental crests, though.

    This game blew my mind as a young teen. Although at the time I was heavily invested in the plot and the world (was my first ogre battle game), Ultimately it was the depth of the game that kept me coming back. So many cool secrets, and alternate paths/choices you could make. The battle system had enough depth to make it so each play-though could feel new and different.
    If there's one thing I disliked about the game however, it would be legions. They are basically just a useless waist of units. I don't feel like the mechanic added anything beneficial to the game... but hey, maybe I'm just playing wrong or w/e.
    Still though, fantastic game, easily my favourite N64 game.

    I wonder if theres a game genie code that would disable the tri-point texture filturing that it does for everything on every game. I remeber Quake 1 had an option to turn it off, it might be possible with this one. Whats crazy is every "sprite" is actually a 3d object and a texture instead of a sprite so it gets the same blending as the background textures sadly... I don't know why only as far as I know ONE game could turn it off. Mischif Makers also is another casulty of this being 2d. I'm not sure why the text box is unaffected though, I have a theory that the n64 must have a display mode for hud/ui elements that is unprocessed and first in the graphic pipeline to streamline it but I am probablly wrong.

    yes. ogre battle 64 was possibly the best iteration of the series and definitely the best game in the n64 era.

    One of the best games of all time related to the time it was released. The literal definition of a hidden gem.

    • @matthuckabey007
      @matthuckabey007 Год назад

      If that was true it would be a jewel. Then you couldn't play with it even if you did find it.... You mean to say, it is the definition of hidden gem when it comes to Nintendo 64 titles. You don't put "literal" in a description like this. people use that word WAY too much. That said, I completely agree with you, this game is unparalleled.

    Unlocking the hidden classes. Funny enough when I unlocked the Dragoon I had an interesting bug, for some reason when I switched one of my knights(named him after one of my buddies) He bugged out and was able to retain his knight weapon, so I basically had a Dragoon with the purple Ogre sword, guy was unstoppable.

    Ever ogre battle/tactics ogre game save for march of the black queen has lodis involved
    My favourites were the knight of lodis and person of lordly calibre
    I do have a soft spot for let us cling together but it's not in the top 2
    But the fact that the other two games actually leads to luct with this game left out

    I couldn't get into OB64, even though I LOVE MotBQ. The SNES game sucks me in, a very picky gamer in long enough to learn all stuff that I need to play successfully.
    OB64 has a cripplingly long unskippable introduction. It may not have been play-tested as thoroughly as MotBQ. I, too, remember the animation as rather jerky. Not what I was hoping for 😢

    😂😂 I would have absolutely loved this game as a kid as I was a big fan of the final fantasy games on the snes. However, at that time games weren't mainstream as they are today so you had to just buy it or rent it from block buster and hoped the game was good (superman 64 took an entire week of lawn mowing for that trash) but I saw that game and I wasnt enthused because i thought it was about orcs and ogres and I never gave it a shot.

    Love the game, but you left out by far it's biggest flaw. The lack of explanation/communication about the morality system. And pretty much the whole chaos frame mechanic. Not saying they needed to explain everything, but something more than nothing would have been nice. Still love the game though
