"It doesn't have to be perfect. Finished is what we are going for." I have been using this philosophy as well since last year. It's not easy, but so worth it to let go of perfectionism!! Thank you for taking us on your "re-creative" journey.

Most definitely if you going for perfect it takes the joy out of hand sewing just sewing in general. I've had very simple quilts and projects were I've just said oh well that's were it wants to be lol. ❤ I would've definitely made those hexagon flowers into applique if that's what you're good at. I'm sure you came out with something spectacular I love your work it looks meticulous. 😮

I can relate to your comment “I fell out of love with this project but then fell back in love with it again because of the fabrics.” I have a quilt that I started so long ago. I believe prior to 2004 (b/c that’s when I got married so I know it was before then!) I just came across it the other day and fell back in love with it all over again b/c of the fabrics! Lol. It is now on my “to do” list again. Your quilt came out beautiful! I vote for machine quilting, get that baby done!! 😂

During lockdown I finished a huge embroidery piece I hadn't touched in 30 years. I used your philosophy thar it didn't have to be perfect. I then made it into a pillow size cushion, using my rediscovered sewing machine skills. I was so happy to end up with a functional piece. Thanks again for teaching me to appreciate my own imperfections in my work.

ALL your WIPs would have been completed long ago, if you didn't take sooooo much time creating your exquisite kits 🙂 I can't describe how "over the top" I was when your "Cosy Cottage Sewing Case" kit arrived in Raleigh, North Carolina. The "Vintage Sewing Box" tote bag that the kit arrived in, is absolutely charming!!! You included EVERYTHING I need, even the milliners needle, embroidery needle and grey embroidery thread. Ohhh my, my, my!!! The two page colored photo index of the contents of the kit was the "cherry on top". How thorough you are. It is obvious you were/are a teacher. Of course I LOVE the fabrics you chose. Everything is so precisely cut and organized. I'm 76 year old knitter, crocheter, quilter, EPPer. I have purchased two kits in my entire life. I'm so thrilled I bought yours!!! Thank you for making my sewing case adventure so enjoyable. YOU ARE THE BEST, EMMA!!! I'm so grateful you share your talents with all of us. Thank you is inadequate.

I’m so glad you finished the quilt top after it had been in limbo for so long. Well done! It is beautiful and well worth the effort. I agree - we all get guilty feelings when crafting. Why??? I just don’t know why. It’s madness. You decide the best way for you when you come to quilt it all. Whatever YOU want. It will be beautiful no matter what. There’s a place for hand sewing and machine sewing in all things craft that require stitches. I agree - many of my makes are definitely not perfect but handmade items rarely are or should be. X.

    • @emmajonesvintagesewingbox
      @emmajonesvintagesewingbox  5 месяцев назад +1

Couldn’t agree more Lesley, it’s all about enjoying each step however you get there. And there would be no point in hand making things if they were going to be perfect, handmade and little imperfections show it’s been made by a human and tell the story of the piece 🌸

Emma love how you have rejuvenated this old quilt. Liberty will never tire even with old fabric lines. Personally I think the layout works better than the original. I so enjoyed watching this Emma! This quilt top is looking absalutely lovely, well done! With the top quilting, why not go for simple stitch in the ditch and maybe some straight ‘echo’ lines in some of the squares for a bit more definition?
I’ve just found a method I’m itching to try where you print out loads of the same pattern and simply machine stitch through the paper. Then place the next piece of paper next to it and stitch through that one until the whole quilt is covered by stitched on paper. Then you simply rip the paper off 🤔. I’m going to do a practice one and see how it goes. I’m using a butterfly pattern I found on Pinterest.
Whatever you decide Emma, it will be amazing because you made it. Thanks again and keep up the good work sweetpea 🫶🏻

A simple method for a design wall. Use a curtain rod, with 2 cup hooks to put it up on an empty wall or sit it on top of two cupboards, doors or bookshelves of equal heights. Drape a piece of batting large enough for your current project over the rod (on a table?) and pin the top few inches together. A sleeve of calico/muslin may be easier to pin to? Use the batting for the quilt you are doing, or re-use it, then put it inside a quilt with darker pieces to hide the loose threads, or brush them off? A tall folding room divider could work if big enough? Would half on each side work, folded over the top? All the best.
Could you make 2 more motifs and add a row down the side?

This is turning out great, Emma! A very gentle looking quilt ❤ (What a roller coaster 😅)
It was very wise to use less labour intensive techniques in order to reach a more finished state - that machine appliqué is fabulous and the flowers look beautiful nestled amongst the ninepatches❤ (That's actually a quilt design I would totally choose to steal, if you don't mind😂)
I look forward to seeing it "really" finished😍.

I have a whole lot of colourful squares sewn together that I made so many years ago now that I forget what I had originally intended them for. Well done Emma. I know what I haven't seen for a while, your lovely crocheting projects. Maybe when you've finished your quilting projects you cud start on your crochet ones 😅 I'm only saying that coz I am doing just that😅

It is lovely that you found a way to use the blocks you weren't too keen on. They have made such a pretty quilt with the machined blocks you made. You have a very keen eye for what will look good together. xx

Quilt top is beautiful, the idea of the patch blocks in between and applique hexes is perfect time saver. That's my lesson learnt for today, time saving. Now I'll be rethinking my quilt plan, otherwise I will be stitching the same thing for years 😂 Thank you 🌷

It looks beautiful so far… why don’t you do an appliqué flower on the background and do some dashing … good luck it will be beautiful no matter how you finish it..👍🥰

    Hi Emma,
What a beautiful quilt. I love things that are hard made. Everything you make is so pretty. I also have some unfinished projects.
You inspired me to pull them out,and work on them. Thank You sweet lady ❤

I am wondering what a white bacground might have looked like? Would there gave been a greater contrast to your hexies? I am finding the computers colour not being bright enough or true to what you must be seeing. Congrats on rhe progress. Quilting it by hand on the diagonal. Use a bit of à larger stitch with a fine crochet cotton.. i am not sure the difference between crochet and quilting threads. I think using some of the colours in your fabrics would liven it up and enhance the finished work. I wonder how a variety of colours would work. Maybe you have some leftovers that would work to your advantage. I now see how much work I have ahead of me. My hexies are still in the making. A friend is working on a larger hexie for
a museum we both work at. I am helping to stitch the flowers together. She intends to do a path of cream around the flowers. My mother had used an apple green in her "Grandmothers Flower Garden" quilt. My sister selvaged what she could. She framed one flower for each of us- 4 sisters. It hangs in my living room here in Canada. The others are in Michigan, USA and The Netherlands. I love your stitchings.

Thank you! I wanted to use the off white to give a more vintage look plus that’s what I had. In real life there is plenty of contrast. 🌸🧵
